Be careful -- that crappy chrome will not look as good in person and it's a pregnant dog to remove.

And pricewise, you're 100% right.  That craigslist bike will never sell above 2500

Crappy chrome, eh?  I guess the vision has to change then from a pretty retro cafe to a rattle can flat black rat cafe beater bike. That could be fun, but the simple truth is that there are probably a lot of simpler and shorter paths to that end.

i have a clutch slave cover from one and the chrome was peeling off like shingles.  the bike it came from was garaged all of its life and was barely in the weather.  it looked fine but i picked at one a bit and rrrrrip it started coming off.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

well, a lot of the old chrome on the Italian bikes was too thin or badly applied.. at least the factory stuff.. i have a pair of Conti Pescaras for my Darmah and they are still perfectly chromed.

such a shame this bike is being parted out since it has a nice collection of accessories and mods.
Don't argue with idiots. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

the shame of it all really is the reality that a machine like that is worth way more as the sum of it's parts seperated than as a whole put together...

nope, i've never bought from him.

i don't begrudge him his business, there are plenty of bike parters out there. but it really grinds me that he takes perfectly good bikes like this one out of commission.  after a certain point, making a bike super rare robs it of value because so few people have them that people stop making parts/etc for them.

So for the heck of it I pasted the listing into Excel and summed it up: $13,720 for the parts listed on there as of today.  Sadly, he probably only needs to actually sell half (or even less) of the parts at those prices to exceed what he could have gotten for the bike in one piece.  Once he hits the halfway mark, he can deep discount and it will still all be gravy. Those are pretty compelling numbers.

Nonetheless, it offends me (however irrationally) on some level and makes me a little  [puke].

Even worse - he couldn't get 6 grand for this bike, even with all the mods. The 900ss' just don't command top dollar, especially ones that early. Possibly some day they'll go up in value but right now, nope. They are just great bikes. I <heart> mine, so it *is* sad to see one that someone put so much effort into being broken, I mean Nichols flywheel+FCRs+944+everything else.
I wonder if the person who built this bike knew it was going to be parted out...
