Typically, the glass is pretty well empty before the ice does more than make the whiskey or bourbon "neat"

but it still chills it and hides some of the flavor.

True, I need a fridge that keeps things at about 50ºF I wouldn't even concern with the ice.  I'm thinking I need to try Pryat without the ice and my favorite bourbon without the ice for comparison.  I didn't realize it hampered the flavor ~

try it at room temp. the taste will be completely diff. then try it with a capful of spring water.
smell it, inhale deeply. then roll it around your mouth. involve all of the senses you can. i guarantee you it will taste diff.

also, one of my friends won't drink scotch unless it has ice and a good dose of water. he doens't liek the flavor otherwise. i keep telling him to find a diff liquor.

i have told him something along those lines a few times. lol

he started drinking whiskey because at the last nat'l meeting we were both at his boss made fun of his drink of choice, captain and ginger.
personally i love that drink and would drink it all night long. however, i developed a taste for whiskey quite a while ago and happened to be drinking it that night (glenlivet) so he asked me to get him what i was drinking. his face was funny when he drank it. the bartender refused to add ice, but did splash some water in it for him. he promptly dumped half of his water glass from dinner in it.  laughingdp

maybe he should try straight rum or tequila. those aren't too affected by the ice.

Capt & Ginger = Dark & Stormy, particularly Gosling's & ginger ale, which is excellent for a mixed drink.
