Lock them in a room together for an hour. After that open the door. Whichever is smoking the cigarette is now the Alfa, the other one should be whimpering in the corner, rocking itself back and forth; he is the Beta.

when we brought a new cat into the house we kept the new one in a room for a few days that had a gap under the door big enough for them to play with each other under pretty cute stuff. they were generally friendly after a day or 2 and get along fairly well.

Ones neutered and the other isn't. Amusing stuff, over the years the neutered cat is still the boss and the un-neutered cat doesn't even spray to make a play for dominance, I think we got lucky there :p

The cat is declawed. Unfortunately, the dog already learned that lesson.  A stray swatted her across the tongue last year.   They are both females. The dog is 18 lbs and the cat is nearly 5.

Yup.  German Shephard/Great Dane mix puppy (bigger than all the cats at 4 months) got put on the run by a 6lb cat.  Just keep an eye on them.  You may have to help train the dog that backing the cats in a corner results in an owie.
