They talk about using the SAE J2825 Motorcycle Sound Test in the article. The requirements for a twin are 92db at idle and 96db at 2000 rpm. Now I have an open air box, a mid-pipe (no udder), and race slip-on Termi's (no baffles) on my S2R800. It is loud, very loud from what people tell me. I still think I might be able to pass that test. My bike only really opens up past 4000 rpm on noise.

doesn't matter if it doesnt have the EPA sticker you still get the ticket according to the article.
NOW, if aftermarket manufacturers start getting EPA certification for pipes, like the termi Ti pipes, then that will be great.
Key is the pipe manufactureres need to get on board and say, fine... we'll help you follow the law and get the certification AND get you right to the limit on db WITH a db limiter and removable cats in

The only thing I'm not fully understanding is the whole 2013 thing.
Does it just mean that all aftermarket exhausts, from 2013 on, have to meet the EPA standards? And what about exhausts prior to that year?
Oh, and a funny thing, I was reading some of the comments beneath the article and few people were arguing that this law will help make the air cleaner. I'm calling bullshit. The new Escalade they have sitting in their deiveway puts out a hell of a lot more emissions than our little bikes do. And I wont even begin to talk about the POS beater with three wheels that spews out black smoke so thick it sticks to the window of the car five cars back. I'm sure that's great for the environment.

The sad thing is the target of the bill is not the DUC owners with termis or even the cruisers running aftermarket exhausts with baffles, it's the D&D pipes on jap bikes and the straight pipes on cruisers. The most recent purchase I made was a V&H for my XR1200, it's got a little bit of a rumble, but by no means is it too loud. That is the advantage of the standard the AMA is pushing, if it is noise then let's measure noise, rather than add additional manufacturing costs to the aftermarket systems. But I gotta tell you we need to be proactive on this topic, we need to start policing ourselves, excessive noise is bad for all of us. And it is not about power gains, I have a Doug Cook, ARC, set of reverse cones attached to a DP full system on my S2R1000, it did not have baffles and registered 117db at 25', last winter I had DucPond build some baffles, the bike is just as fast on the track, and actually pulls even stringer coming out of the turns. So as a fellow rider I'm asking you to think about your own bike and those that you ride with and if it's too loud do something about it before the government does stupid. - Gene

unfortunately gene, too many people have the opinion of "i want full open termi and full system and i don't care how loud it is on the street".
I know we all like our termi systems, nobody more than myself, but i doubt many would if you had to wake up to them constantly outside of our doorstep at full bore at every family function on the weekends, even then you would have hardcore duc owners saying enough is enough.
You can't really only blame the d&d systmes on inline 4s and such (though the akropovik system on the cannonball mv agusta brutale at ducpond is obnoxiously loud at idle, geez that thing you can hear from blocks away), a 1000 vtwin duc with a full systme and no baffles is ear splitting loud as much as the inline 4s. but i do agree the harleys with the straight pipes are even louder.

I bought a set of Mivv slip ons last month and they came with a couple certifications for EU emissions. They are less loud than my old Mivv pipes. I wonder if a Euro cert (which is also stamped on the cans) would work in place of the EPA stamp where the exhausts were made for overseas markets.

I rode that bike Yesterday. It was insanely loud. I was scared I was going to be pulled over. It was addictive though, even though I knew the bike was making too much sound it encouraged me to do it more. Later that day I was in my house and I heard that bike doing demo rides on Rt 37 which is about a mile away. The MV rep said he was going to put the baffles back in before it attracted any more attention.

my old s4r with arrow pipes was the loudest bike i've ever owned... (it also finished in third place at the sound contest at la ducati day
) it was so loud that i felt sorry for anybody in the vicinity when i did my pre-ride warmup. when i came home, i'd coast the last two blocks to my garage and walk it in so at not to annoy off my neighbors. if i left early in the morning, i'd coast downhill three blocks before i started it.
yes, it was annoyingly loud, but DAMN it sounded good when i was riding it.
