How do I get to this bolt?

Just like the title says.  I circled it in red.  None of my tools will get between the engine case and the bolt head.

Bonus - what about the pinch bolt on the top triple?

Thanks

You need an L type allen for the shifter. You may need to maniplulate the lever to get it in there.

I'm pretty sure I remember using an allen socket on the triple with the bars turned all the way in one direction.

Found a shorter allen wrench and managed to get it out.  Now I can't get the end of the shift mechanism off the shaft...

Flip the lever over while you're at it, that was on backwards.

Unless for some reason you need the link-rod on the outside....

Will do.  I thought it was backwards because it was so hard to get at.  I recall a very hasty repair done with whatever I could get my hands on after miles of being in 2nd gear because I lost a the bolt.  I could have reassembled it wrong.  However, I don't think I good that off...

What works for my bike:
Turn the bars full right, and use a allen socket on an extension.  Sometimes, depending on one thing or another, how the steer stops are adjusted makes access room more or less.  Lifting the tank can help also.

You have to remove the fastener to get the lever off the shaft.

Did you take the bolt all the way out? There's a groove milled into the shaft that the bolt runs through. So even when the bolt is loose enough to spin with your fingers, it won't come off until you slide the bolt all the way out

I have this irrational idea that the forward position of the bolt with the lever backwards may make it a smidgen harder for it to fall off if it loosens from vibration.

+1

It won't come off ( shift arm) unless you remove the bolt completely

My '99 M750 was also assembled like that.  Had to cut down a 4mm allen wrench to get in there and remove the bolt.

Also, if you remember a hasty repair and now realize you don't have the tool for the job, maybe you didn't remove it in the first place as you didn't have the tool for it...

Thanks for the input, got it by taking the bolt out and pressing it open with a flat screwdriver ~
