Sounds like you saw him, rode up and stayed in his blind spot.  (This is where you should of passed, you knew the lanes were merging. Even if they were not merging to one, the other lane was so people might dart into your lane.) He wanted to get over but lost site of you.  All of a sudden he sees you, goes back in his lane to do a sudden stop instead of trying to run you off the road.
Also by you riding in the right side of the lane you may think you are being safer.  Really you are saying hey its OK to come into my lane.  You should really stay more to the left having more lane presence.

at no time was i going the same speed he was, i was trying to pass him the whole time. We can disagree on whcih method we think is safer because you cant guarantee someone is going to look in their mirror. Better i have a car width to react and slow down or speed up then to just get nailed instantly.

and yes i took the train today. the only issue was some fat guy took up 2 seats, which isnt an issue at all cause atleat i can stand. :D

but riding a motorcycle in the city would make me hate it within about an hour.  That's a choice that seams to have brought you much grief and aggrevation.

Getting run over by me is the closest thing to an honorable death most people are ever gonna get. I'm a charitable soul.

Boston? You're thinking a move from NYC to Boston will get you better drivers?  Arguably less chance of a chicken-fat bike wash, but fewer bat-shit insane drivers?  Um, no.
