Like dp said, the thickness of the base gasket sets the volume of the combustion chamber and impacts the compression ratio and the timing belt tension.  You should replace it with one of the same thickness.  I do not know if the thickness is stamped on the face of the gasket or you will need a caliper or a micrometer.  You may want to call ahead, I never assume they have the parts I need in stock.

After you've been around a while longer...

you'll realize I'm rarely serious...the laughing smiley is named after me...before I changed my screen name to humorlessdp. ;)

Good for you for trying. We'll be here to help. It's all good.

I used board sponsor CommonWealth when I needed to get a head gasket they have a pretty fantastic parts catalog too.
http://www.store.commoto.com/parts-ordering.php
I also saved some cash by making my own tool to remove the head nuts. I simply took the apporiate box end wrench and socket then pressed them together in a vice. Wish I hadn't washed my memory card from my camera with the pictures of when I had my head apart it would be usefull right about now. I was like you and did the job my self, made a bunch of mistakes but I eventually got everything back together amd working.

when i removed the cylinder i saw that the ppl who worked on the bike before used Gasket Sealant. (from what i know & read online nobody uses Gasket sealant for this)
as you can see there is a lot of oil there. do you think the gasket sealant caused the problem? * the gasket itself looks pretty beat  up. is that normal?
should i clean the top of the piston from those burns or leave it the way it is?
Im going to put everything together next weekend. If you have any suggestions/advices please let me know. thank you all!  [moto]

there should be an Oring.
If not, and PO sealed that oil passage w sealant, it could probably be the reason
for the oil leak.

yep, missing o-ring

you actually did it!  you apparently know more than you originally let on!

use a tiny bit of grease to keep the orings in place when you're sliding things down.

i use rtv head gasket silicone for mine.

have used it on a variety of heads and never fails.  best trick for me is to put a small bead, smear it flat and let it sit for about a minute until it gets slightly tacky.  if you torque the head down too quickly, it will be too liquid and will completely push out.

i doubt you'll have issues, but inspect your studs and use new nuts.  I also use the silicone UNDER the nut.  It squishes out and covers just enough that it prevents corrosion.  Same trick on a VW head.  completely optional.

You must have a stressful job where this sort of stuff is a picnic :p
I tore down my 94 yamaha i-4 engine and was sweating about the piston rings... and the sleeves are tapered on it for super easy installation. not to mention getting the timing chain right after (took me 3 hours to set it right on the cam gears... the second time). I can't imagine the stress doing this sort of work on a bike I actually care about heh

battlecry

Not really, I'm just old(er).  If you grew up with Triumphs and Alfas, you get used to having to tear things up.

Impressive work!  Now let's see the video of the first start on reassembly!  I'm very impressed -- looks like you took your time.
