About To Powdercoat. Rearset/peg carrier removal?

I'm about to powdercoat a bunch of bits and pieces for both my bikes and really want to do the rearsets or footpeg carriers I guess I'd call 'em on the 696,  but have a couple questions:

1. for anyone who's powdercoated them already, does it last or does it rub off where your boots touch when riding? 

2. I looked in the tutorial section, but didn't see one for removing these.  Any tips before I attempt to take them off?  It looks relatively simple, but...   

So, far I have the top triple, the handlebar clamp, the heat shields, exhaust hangers and the headlight surround off the bike ready for powdercoat.  I've considered doing the handlebar, but, then I guess I might as well just replace the bar if I'm going to go through the trouble of taking the controls apart.

I did my passenger peg mounts. They were down to bare metal quite fast - where my heal touch (size 12 boots)
IMO it doesn't look too bad, but don't expect powder coat to resist boot rubbing.

Make sure all holes are covered - the powder coat makes the holes smaller.
Also, anywhere a powdered part touches anything, you must expect that after some time you'll need to retighten bolts.

Not sure about the 696, but on S*R bikes taking off the rear sets requires that the bike is on a rear stand The kick stand will fall off when the rear sets are removed. Check your bike for a similar issue.

yes the side stand uses the same bolts as the rear set on the left. so you'll need that rearstand
also, there is a pressed in rubber bushing that you'll have to asked the shop about.
all the other rubber bushings come out

Nice timing!  I just pulled off both sides and was about to ask advice on the rubber bushings.  So, all except that pressed in center one should just pull out with a pair of pliers?  And when you say to ask the shop about the pressed in bushing, might it be possible for them to powdercoat with it still in?  For the holes, should/can they be taped off?   Sorry, I'm pretty new to powdercoating.  I've had a bunch of pieces that I wanted to have done for a while now, but this is my first time actually having it done. 

Side note: for a rearsand for these monsters, what tends to be the preferred make/model?

Mine are getting done as we speak. I have the older DSS so there were a total of 8 grommets that I couldn't get out. The powdercoater said that they would probably melt out in the process. I called my local shop and they ordered me some from the factory for 1.99 a pop. Not too bad. I'm curious how easy they are going to be to get in if I couldn't get them out.

I've pced them for people and they all say the same thing about the foot rubbing so i tried to get a thicker coat still no joy. it will eventually rub out. Same with the kickstand. after a while where you boot contacts the kickstand, will rub off as well.

rearstand: for the 696 i bought a local make from a German shop, unless you add spindles you'll need the one with the rubber paddles on it.

for installing the rubber bushing again, use grease and they go in easy.

your shop should be able to tell you what type of tape to use. anywhere where you want to keep the diameter or thickness the same tape it, cause the PC gets thick. i had to clean out several holes after when mine was done.
and yeah it's a question about PCing with the pressed in one. he'll know.

well, all the parts and pieces are at the powdercoaters.  they are going to try to get the 3 rubber bushings out that I couldn't.  Can't wait to get them all back and start putting the bike back together.

I've had the job done on mine and the rubber parts stayed where they are. They did not melt or get hard. Powdercoating is done with 250° C. That will have no effect. The coating was done last winter and I did 12000 km this summer. There is no obvious wear.

I would love to see pics when you get your 696 put back together.  I am looking to do the exact same thing when I get time off for the holidays.  I would like to hear your opinion about the color as it compares to the frame and the rest of the bike.  Good luck.

Looks good!  Yes, this is what I expect from mine as well.  The ducati black really isn't black.  It's got a bit of gray in it.  I'm OK with it not all being an exact match on the black though.

Moschy, those things look a 100 times better.  The shade difference is hardly noticeable and I was looking for it.  How hard was it to take off the headlight shroud?  Nice work.

Getting the lamp shroud off was a 30 min job. The hardest was to get the silver coating off. The guy who did the coating job for me said it had to be bare metal.
