"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the air—these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

don't know why the pic link failed.  you should be able to click thru tho.

I would just call that one a traditional streetfighter, not a Monsterised  SS. I was riding my old SS like that for awhile. I just couldn't get to where it looked complete, then the electrics blew up...

It can be done and sometimes it works out pretty well, like this one (IMHO).

The risks are that you might end up botching the job or just getting tired of it and finding yourself with an old hooker (nasty as $#!T and you gotta pay people to ride it). And there's plenty of these around, and you see people asking ridiculous amounts of money for them...

Personally I'd keep the SS as a track/weekend fun bike and play with the monster. If you really really really want to mod the SS, then I'd suggest doing some research to find the design that makes you really  drool and then sticking to it! waytogo

FYI that's a mid-90s SS.  I think the looks will be harder with a post 98 model.

but looks like exactly what i said to do...

..... You are left with figuring out what to do with the cockpit, which has the subframe for the fairing and gages.  Throw it all out, reduce the wiring and use a different tach/speedo and you might have something.  I have some other pics at home, I'll post them when I can.

No one has done it on the later model SS though that I have seen-- I mean, I am sure its been done, I just haven't seen it.

check out RadicalDucati.com as they are lately making use of old ST2 (watercoolers) and putting new tanks/seatcowls on them and building something rather trick looking.  ST2's are cheap! Just slap an S2R swingarm setup on there for the singlesided look.

I think all ST2 are also pre-immobilizer setup. (the ones I've dealt with were easy to swap gauges and used factory ECU)

I thought a DMF vendor on the list screen (<----) is carrying the parts now for the USA? (or did someone post there is a USA vendor elsewhere instead?)  No clue what the cost or quality is -- but it's definitely a viable alternative for a Ducati project that could be put together in ones garage without major fabrication required.

FWIW: Old SS tanks (91-98) can be easily swapped over to the efi fuel pump should anything become of a '99&up SS project bike.

...and look what I just found:
this is about as close an example of my own vision I was able to find. rilly digging the rake. not feeling the chrome headlight, or the monposto (is th@ rite?) but yeah, i guess th@ would be a pretty effed up thing to do to such a pristine specimen. but, god, it would be fun!  Evil
anyone got a shattered 888, 916, or supersport.....cheap? (very cheap)

if you mange to find and molest an 888, please DON'T post pictures.  get an old brit bike or
a CB750 and have at it.

+1.   please don't harm a supersport. if you want to take one and do something to it, beef up the triples/forks with SBK specimens, overhaul the suspension and brake components (especially if you have a CR), and enjoy how well it does what it was designed to do.

"Monsterizing" an 851/888/955 has already been done. In the early 90's. Its called the Monster. A modified 888 frame, SS motor, and a top mount handlebar.

If you are looking to have a sportier Monster (like a "monsterized ss" or "monsterized 888:916"), take a regular Monster, and put on clipons/rearsets and perhaps a SBK or SS or CA-Cycleworks tank on it. Voila. Monsterized/Superized. If you want the SBK power, start with an S4/S4R/S4RS/t/SF

wow; we're having fun now! lots of good ideas and advice. tank swap sounz interesting. rearsets too. I have LSL clip ons, but just for giggles i've been thinkin of SBK switches and such when i do my grips. any ideas?

back on topic tho. I personally am kinda lovin' this one:

if anyone REALLY wants to save the SS, it is looking for a new home. owner is awaiting delivery of a 2007 SS 1000. let me know.

so you have one or not?

as far as i am concerned, any SS is fair game to be customized provided you do a good job with it.  the 888 or 916 are different, they are practically museum pieces.

i think the suggestion to pick up an ST2 is a good one, the 900cc powerplant in that bike is very nice, more hp out of the box than the air cooled version

the SS belongs to my dad. coulda been mine, but I opted for the monster. its for sale now and I got dibs, but can't afford both. thats where all these crazy ideas materialized. I'm going to a motorcycle tech program next year so I could in theory ride the SS as is, bang it up a bit, then go crazy with it, as one post suggested. with school loans and the school's resources i'd have me one helluva winter project! but I love my monster and like I said, can't afford both so I guess the point is moot.

the ST sounz like a good idea. Im sure some1 wont agree, but id whack one of those in any condition. isnt the term "sport touring" kind of an oxymoron?
as far as "doing" an 888 (as if) or 916, how bout a twisted frame and a random motor/trans.

personally, i would never monsterize an SS or SBK since there are Monsters already

But, since there is no current SS I would SS a Monster (kinda what i'm doing already)
