So you're saying that Super Duplex is difficult material, but you can drill it with non-carbide drill with external coolant.

Yes.

I did some SD rings that got holes with counter bore for cap screws. The through hole was .406.

I got 6 holes with solid carbide. Barely.

I called my precision twist drill rep and he recommended a high performance cobalt drill. Said his software predicted 200 holes.

Yeah right, I said.

Sure enough, I got 200 holes. The drill looked a little rough but I'm actually still using it when I have need for that size.

We are basically 100% Sandvik at our shop. After this was all said and done I looked in their book and they don't even list cutting data for super duplex in the carbide drill section.

Must have been a reason.

Lesson learned. I have no fear of the stuff now that we have a solid method established.

Someone who doesn't know the material and just guesses how to run it instead of asking for help will get murdered by it.

I did not. My customer can't get a response from the end user.

Such is life.

Got something else cooking though.

That's astonishing.

You're not kidding. After a while I stopped watching the load meter. That progressed to turning my back to the mill while it was running. That progressed to loading parts and walking away.

Work hardening is the real issue with any stainless.
Cobalt and high speed steel drills will work wonders when you get them dailed in on the feeds and speeds.
My rule of thumb is speed kills. Lower RPM's and higher feeds with break up chips without generating great amounts of heat.
But when it comes to 17-4 PH, All bets are off. That shit will work harden just being loaded into the machine. laughingdp

I've seen 17-4 PH literally untwist a drill. While being flooded with coolant. bang head

Untwist?  That shouldn't happen...

Solid carbide tears it up pretty well, especially with 1000psi coolant through Smiley

Still taking on work for January!

I got orders for a couple things I didn't really want to do so I put crazy money on the jobs and still got the work.

Been a while since i updated.

Induction hardened hydraulic rod. We milled the flats and thread milled the center.

Hydraulic cylinder. Faced about 3/16 off the first end and bored a 20° chamfer with no support. OD turned using a live center and face plate I made.

New guy had a mishap so I get to do a turret alignment today.

Scored this awesome dial bore gage set on eBay. .057"-.800" in .0001" increments.

Aluminum-bronze thingy. Machined complete in the lathe.

14' tie rods I threaded.
