Anyway, that is a significant date for the Mayans....but not necessarily the end of everything, just the end of that cycle and beginning of the next.
In their past the changing of the cycles usually did bring with them great changes but it's not necessarily doom and gloom, could just be a new Apple product coming out or something this time around. 
Because the jackass Conquistadors destroyed most everything all we have is a tiny amount of info to speculate from.
What is so amazing was how great of mathematicians and astronomers these people were (as well as some of these other ancient civilizations).
We will not be in the center of the galaxy on the date, not exactly. Picture a platter, it has some thickness right? Now if you trace an orbit around the center but tip the orbit at a bit of an angle. On that date, or approximately so, we cross the midpoint of the thickness. Any significance to it? Maybe, maybe not but it is interesting how it all coincides.
I cling to some hope that something does occur around that date, I hope for something good like maybe a light will shine from the sky and assholes will magically start using common sense and life will become less annoying.
