mpg question
«
on:
February 21, 2011, 10:13:19 AM »
Hi, now that the weather is finally getting a little better here on the east coast, I've been able to take out my 2010 696. After 80 miles the gas light went on, shouldn't I be getting much more than that? Only equates to around 30 or so mpg. I have been keeping it under the 5500 limit and have not been driving too vigorously. Should I be concerned??

Me too.......I have a 07 S4Rs and it's supposed to go about 215 miles per tank. I get around 100 +/- 25 miles.

not to threadjack irridiums 696 question...
but I don't know any s4rs guys that get more than about 100ish per tank. Where'd you ever hear double that? I don't think I could coast downhill idling and get 200.

S2R1000 and on the highway i can get 50mpg easily.
City it can drop to 30mpg.
Theres multiple theories on breaking your engine in.
When i first got it, i couldnt get pass 22mpg city. Then i started flogging the shit out of it. I read somewhere that babying the motor to break it in doesnt work well. So I'd hit redline it several times a day while riding like a jackass (engine warmed up ofcourse).
I got the bike at 4000 miles, and by 6,000 miles my MPG shot up dramatically when the motor finnaly broke in.
Not sure if it was from flogging it, or breaking it in over time or what. But your MPG should go up as the motor breaks in.

I've got an '03 620 and can get a max of about 165 miles on a tank - but that's as far as I'd push it.

I usually get about 45-50 in mixed riding on my 696 with Termis. If I ride super aggressive that drops but not that much. Usually I get almost 150 miles out of a tank.

sorry if this is something you already knew... but are you filling the tank up to the top? when i got my first bike, i didnt know you had to push up the collar on the gas pump in order to let the pump fill the tank to the top. i was getting at most half or 3/4 tank fillups till i checked online to see what was wrong.
if you've just been letting the pump fill it till it cant anymore without pushing up the collar, that might be the reason behind you getting that kind of mileage...
and my 796 abs is getting about 120ish miles from full tank to when the light first pops on... this is at only about 240'ish miles on the odometer with a slightly smaller tank than the non abs bikes.

I think winter gasoline also returns less fuel economy than summer gasoline due to the amount of butane and other junk they blend into it. When the weather is colder there are all sorts of factors that lower your fuel economy. You're still running on winter blend and it's not quite warm yet. Optimum fuel economy occurs in hot and dry weather.
Combine this with the list of the other factors mentioned, and perhaps you have the answer to your fuel economy issues.
As for the S4RS getting 215 miles per tank. I don't think so. The mileage you're getting is about right. Ducatis are not particularly fuel efficient motorcycles. Fuel tank capacity: 14 L (of which 3 L reserve)/ 3.6 US gal (of which 0.8 US gal reserve). So dividing 215 miles by 2.8 gal(useable tank capacity until the fuel light triggers), you arrive at 77mpg. Nope, not from a 130hp Desmoquattro. 125 miles by 2.8 gal is 45mpg, a much more realistic number.

from what i've heard about redlining the hell out of it during the break in is that it produces a bit more hp compared to a more lightly broken in bike, but might increase chances of issues in the future. something about seating the gaskets or something. supposedly, and i forget where i saw this, it's great for racebikes because every little bit counts... but racebikes are more regularly torn down and dont do the daily grind.

yea im not sure exactly what it is, i have heard of reliability issues if you do that, however i've not witnessed any aside from those caused by me crashing the bike.

I didn't think about that, maybe the Dealer I got the bike from did not have the tank filled all the way up, I just assumed.....
