01 M750 front sprocket: flat side in, or out?

I've been trying to figure this thing out. I own a ducati Monster 750 -01. I know that 800's have the flat side in (ref ca cycleworks), and I thought for some reason that it was the same for the 750. And now I'm not so sure...

I know! This is what confuses me! I'm pretty sure it came with the flat side in, but then the parts catalog says the opposite. To add to the confusion: a workshop manual I've got (from the internet, the German/French one) says flat side in. Then again, I'm not sure if this is specific for my year.

Duc750 looks like he's got experience with the bike in question though.

if i'm in doubt i fit it one way and look down the top of the swingarm with the chain out of the way. the ridge on the chain slider will either line up with the teeth or not. from memory (as a gross generalisation) all 4.5" rear wheel 98 on small engine bikes have it flat side in, 5.5" wheel flat side out.

Used Brad's way and looked down the ridge of the chain slider with the chain off. Excellent method! Flat side in it is. Thanks

I had the same question about a year ago and, using the same method Brad mentioned, found that flat side in provides the correct alignment.

this was useful. I'm doing a rear wheel upgrade to 5.5" which has a different offset to the sprocket carrier so I guess I'll be flipping my front sprocket the other way now to have the flat side out.
