The DMF helped me find a 999!

I was on a quick 20 minute cruise on Sunday.  I was a good boy but I did get on it once in second gear.

I have never been on anything that pulls this hard. This bike is fast. Wicked fast. I went from 45-95 in probably less than 3 seconds. I backed out before I hit the limiter.

This bike commands your respect and full attention. Believe me, its getting it.

After my first few rides on mine I told people that if ever there was a bike that was going to kill me the 999 was it.    Just joking.  But hell, yeah it gets and deserves your full respect and attention.   [moto]

So, on my maiden voyage Duck-Stew may have mentioned that there was a nice straight section of wide, smooth road that IF I felt like it, I could maybe open her up a bit and stretch her legs... Well, he motioned for me to go ahead of him when the time came.  We were prolly around 80ish in 4th, so I dropped her down to 3rd and whacked it WFO...


I clicked up into 4th gear and looked down.  The big numbers on the digital display showed 142!  [moto] Seemed like it was in a blink of the eye... 

I decided slowing down was a very very good idea.

What was wrong with it?

Original culprit was the Throttlebody & Throttle control sensor.  Ran like a champ for 8 wonderful days, then.....ECU went to crap.  I am surprised that it runs for me know, as much as I cussed it during the first couple of months.  I have never been known for having the best luck.

If you ever have a problem with the ECU and/or the immobilizer get a Nemesis immediately.  Don't even think about staying with stock. I went through that and it cost me 3K to get everything straightened out and that was even with special discounts from the dealer and a tech, Will, who went out of his way to help. In the end it was the event that prompted me to sell the bike after it was all fixed. In hindsight I shouldn't have sold the bike but I was pretty PO'd at the time.

Damn if it doesn't.  Other than I was fortunate enough to have the original ECU that came on the bike (kick ass customer service at the shop - they tracked down the original owner, who still had the stock exhaust / ECU, and talked him into giving it to me).  I looked into the Nemisis, but decided to have the stock ECU reflashed for the Termi's ($250 vs. $1000).  

Man, I can't tell you how many times I thought about selling it.  8 months was a long time to figure out what was wrong with it the first time, and then to have it shut down on me again 8 days later.  I was beside myself.  Looking back, I am glad I didn't sell it.  Now that it is back to normal, It's a blast to ride.  It was definitely worth the wait.

Yeah, it can get you into a lot of bad shit, quick.  Not a very forgiving bike either, at least from my point of view.  The front wheel doesn't seem to want to stay on the ground.  The seat is like a flattened out beer coozie, crazyglued to a 2x6 board, mounted directly over an industrial heat gun that is blowing directly on your nuts.

Uh....remind me again why we like these bikes so much.

The nuts weren't so bad but the inside of my right thigh would absolutely roast.

I just ride mine in the cool/cold months. It tends to stay parked and covered during the summer. The LAST thing you ever want to do is get stuck in a really bad stop and go traffic jam on a highway that you cannot get off of in the summer. Don't ask me how I know. 5 minutes after I got home I ordered a clutch slave on line and never rode it again between May and September.

Even with her "issues" I absolutely love my 999. I, like so many others, hated them when they first came out (being a Tamburini lover). But after a year or two they really grew on me and by 2005 I had to have one. So glad I finally came around. As cool as the new Duc sbks surely are I have no reason to upgrade. Happy where I am. Just call me old and easily amused.

Now that it is back to normal, It's a blast to ride.  It was definitely worth the wait.

An aftermarket slave is on my list.

Toward the end of owing my M900 I was starting to have problems with my hand "pulling apart" if that makes any sense, when working the clutch on long rides.

That progressed to happening on short rides, then the bike got sold.

No issues with my KTM, but 10 minutes on the nine-er brought back all the memories of "Ducati hand"

Yeppers. That 20-25% decrease in lever pull is well worth the $$$. From what I can tell there aren't any bad ones out there. I have Evoluzione brand slaves on all my Ducs. But they all seem to be about the same price and work the same.

An RCS clutch master cylinder helps quite a bit as well.  In fact, I noticed a larger difference by adding that than I did the Oberon slave cylinder.

ML, Congrats on your journey to the dark side (sbk)! I'm up to 2 1098s and a 996. They're all I ride anymore, even though I've got one of the sweetest monsters I've ever seen (monstermash's old bike). So much so that the monster and a barely broken-in Daytona 675 are going up for sale 
As long as my body will take it, I see no point to anything but a sbk
