Author Topic: M1100S vs M1100 EVO  (Read 4456 times)

I'm toying with the idea of upgrading from my M696 to an M1100. The question is, which M1100? I'm not really in love with the EVO's exhaust routing and cans and I miss the Ohlins option on the old M1100S. On the other hand I love that the EVO has traction control, ABS, and more power. I'm on the fence with the wet vs. dry clutch until I ride an EVO. Thoughts?

check around to see if there are any new 1100S left as overstock.  Save a few Gs and put it in afterward. 

exhaust is easy to change, but a dry clutch is what it should be.

If it were me, and if budget was not a question, I'd get the EVO then change the exhaust.

With the 1100 EVO, you get ABS, DTC, more power (higher compression ratio, thus more horse power), a more comfortable seat (new design introduced with the 796). 

The EVO weighs 1kg less than a 1100S ABS.  Also comes with better rear foot pegs, attached to the subframe.  And, I prefer the black wheels.

... but that's just me  Grin

Whichever you end up buying, you'll end up loving it!

Agreed. I wonder if there will be any fitment issues with those new rear pegs and after market exhausts. I'm sure my wife would appreciate the new exhaust location.

And, I prefer the black wheels.
I'll bet the EVO wheels aren't magnesium like the ones on the 1100S.

I seriously doubt the 1100S stock wheels are magnesium. Got a source? The Ducati website just says "light alloy". I think they'd advertise the shit out of offering Magnesium wheels.

Anyway, I'd probably get whichever was cheaper, although I may lean towards the EVO. DTC isn't all that useful on an air-cooled 1100 motor IMO, and the exhaust difference is a wash since it always gets replaced. ABS would be nice though, and I prefer wet clutches for everyday riding.

both ugly..but no dry clutch is a no go...i actually like the exhaust on the EVO over the cones on the 1100 and more power is a very good thing.

IIRC, and my memory could be off, the 1100S had forged aluminum wheels like most other S model ducatis.  Magnesium wheels are quite unusual on a production machine (at least in recent history).  Forged aluminum is great though - quite light and durable.  Approx equal to cast magnesium for weight IIRC and likely more durable.  Forged magnesium are lighter still of course but $$$$.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the ohlins on the 1100S - they are pretty but not all that sophisticated.  Esp the rear shock - a pretty basic unit.

I may be wrong on that one...but I did think the 1100 S had lighter wheels than the regular 1100.

Regarding the 1100s-

The wheels are regular cast wheels, same as on other monsters but gold in color.
The ohlins suspension is great, the forks are particularly great, but like was said earlier the shock isn't all that nice, only adjustable for rebound if I recall correctly. Still the suspension is definitely very nice.
The seat is kinda crappy compared to the new evo seat, but that only costs $170 to upgrade.

I'd buy whatever is cheaper, you can't go wrong with either.

yeah... they should list out "standard seat warmers" as a feature on the new monsters...  those headers snaking through the subframe makes it super hot after a while.
