2011 Monster 796...and that RED frame....

Is there any possible way to get a 796 without the red trellis frame? I've been planning to get a 796 along with the 'Dharma' logomania kit, but it will look absolutely silly with the red trellis frame.

I suppose I could get the 796 and have the frame custom painted to black (or maybe gold to match the dharma)? Or is that going to be a ridiculous headache and $$ to have someone take apart a brand new bike just to paint the frame....

Any opinions from you more experienced Ducati owners?

That red frame makes it go faster.  Shame on you for wanting to make it not red!

I've seen a monster with the red trellis and Dharma kit and yes, it looks awful.  Seriously bad.

If you're going to go through the hassle of custom painting, my vote is for gold.  but it does seem kinda excessive...are you dead set on the Dharma kit?

Was dead-set until I realized the red frame was standard for 796. Can't really afford to get the 1100/black frame and the logomania just for the sake of looks, and prefer the 796 to the 696...

Aside from the cost of repainting, I'd just be hesitant to take a brand-new bike and have someone disassemble half of it. And I can't imagine any way to hand-paint the trellis competently without removing it from the rest of the bike...

Gold trellis with the Dharma would in fact look amazing though...

If I were you, I'd buy a black 796.  Then, spend the money you'd spend on the body kit on some tools.  Procede to tear the bike down to the frame.  Polish the subframe and rearsets, then have them powdercoated along with the frame.  Reassemble.  Buy the body kit later.  You could probably get that done in a week if you really got on it, especially cause it's a brand new bike and nothing is wrong with it yet, etc.

[laugh]  That's what I thought, but I'm a bad speller so just assumed I was wrong.  Thanks!

I will retain my title as world's worst speller.

And yes, sound like exactly right idea.

Going to go for the black 796, enjoy it for summer, and then come wintertime strip it to get access to the frame, and then properly powdercoat / etc.  A nice gold to match the black/gold logomania might be the winner.

Thanks for the opinions!

Raux

It can be done. ;)

Smoothing the casting on the subframe was some work.
it's worth it to do the swingarm at the same time as well.

I had the same 'issue'.  I considered just picking up a barely-used 696 instead of the 796, partly because I wanted a black frame.  In the end the deal on the 796 was too good to pass up, but it meant that the Darmah kit was off the table.

Will Ducati not let you order it with a black frame? When I bought my 696 there were no 2010 black framed 696' available in the US so my dealer had to order it straight from the factory for me. Took like 5 weeks to arrive, but I got what I wanted.

You can do it, but I'd ask Raux how much of a pain in the ass it is.

I would not buy the bike with the intent to tear it down and paint the trellis, kinda ridiculous.

Just get the corse skins, cooler anyway  ;D

I still love the old Gloss Pearl White though, which is why my bike is the best  ;D

The new "silk" white is not nearly as nice.
