I know someone who had a Dog and that Dog for the last 2 years looked like it would fall over and die any day.

I kept telling the people when I'd stop , which wasn't that often , that the Dog looked like it must be in such pain .

They insisted that the Dog could eat and go outside to do it's business and even though it was a bag of bones , it didn't seem to be in pain.

They asked me to stop over one day when they had to be gone for a couple of days and feed it and let it out.

It didn't act like it knew where it was , but it finally went out with some help and did it's business , walked around for a couple of minutes and then came back in.

Finally, when the dog that should have been 100 lbs. got down to 35 lbs . the owners had it put to sleep.

I think they should have done it much earlier for the Dog's sake.

I know , I have a Dog and I won't want to let him go.

My previous 2 have had to be put to sleep due to Cancer.

I'm glad you didn't kill him.  Poor thing.  Sounds like he needs some kindness, a shared ball, and some chicken soup.

A stray dog is not part of society.  Anthropomorphise them all you want, it is still a dog and it would eat your dead body if hungry.

Nature will take its course.  If it is hurt badly, it will die, if not, it will keep knocking over your garbage cans.

& as he found out later, it's NOT a stray, it's someones pet. & even if it were a stray what difference does that make??

you're right... dogs that are pets aren't part of society either.   your quote "a society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable..."  is completely irrelevant.

Okay,

So what I get from this is that Jacob was going to "take care of" a dog that was menacing the neighborhood and intimidating people.

Through fate/luck/destiny/whatever, he never took the shot and ended up helping the poor creature instead.  His dog made friends with the dog, and he found out later it belonged to a neighbor who had rescued it after hitting it with a large piece of machinery.

Because of the dog's disfigurement, it seems like it was generally regarded as "dangerous" by the locals. That prolly figured into Jacob's decision to take it out (besides the percocet).  ;)

Jacob's compassion didn't allow him to follow through after he re-assesed the situation.

When I ended up in the hospital half-dead from a blood infection and swelling putting pressure on my brain stem, Jacob (and Mr.I) without ever having met me, drove an hour and a half to come get me.  He could have said, "make the beast with two backs that guy.... From what I know about him from the Forum, he's an asshole" and not done a thing.

What I'm taking from his story is the "Don't judge a book by it's cover" thing.  If you take time to learn about something or someone, you'll probably find out they're not what you originally thought.

I am an asshole, though...  :-*

I thought you were chatty

and

felt bad for not stopping and putting real food in you

I think the gas station meal after the hospital stay contributed to the several naps that day

The dog saga continues

today I venture out into the rain to clean up the garbage <dog needs a name> scattered around last night while I slept

one drawback of grace making friends is once she gets a person/animals sound and smell in to her she no longer alerts when that creature is around

I don't remember the gas station meal, but I do remember the naps.

I think I was glowing at some point, too...  ;)

Hey Quack,

You might want to lighten up a bit until you get to know your way around here and get a few more posts under your belt.

Also there's a no name calling or personal attacks rule.

Vindingo said your statement was irrelevant, you called him out personally.

Just say'n...

Then again, I'm not a mod, so feel free to disregard my well intentioned advice...

Play nice, boys.   ;)

A year from last February on a 15 degree day, I saw a scrawny looking dog walking down my street.  I noticed him but kept on going with my day.

Later on my neighborhood listserver, I saw post after post about a dog turning over trashcans.

When night came, I said to my wife that when I saw another post that listed his whereabouts, I was going to look for him.  No more posts.

The next morning at 6:30, my neighbor called and said they had him eating in the front yard. Did I have a leash?

I went outside and saw a trembling bag of bones with a clothesline tied around his neck (too tightly).  I knew the second I met him, he would be my dog.

I tested him thoroughly and he slept in my room that night and ever since.

Miles is the best, most attached dog I've ever had.

He ate 15 lbs of food the first weekend and now has a lazy boy recliner all to himself.

Wonder if you have a similar situation.
