It can be done! Quite easily in fact!

Thanks to muskrat for hooking me up with a set of S4R rearsets already powder coated in black.

Basically you will need four parts which won't come with the rearsets:

1) A ~.75cm spacer for behind one of the two lower bolts on the clutch side. You could stack washers up if you wanted to, would be ghetto but wouldn't be un-safe by any stretch.
2) A thread extension or new plunger for your stock master cylinder (or an S4R master cylinder). I used the 1100 master and made this extension from some hex stock, easy. The extension is about 1/2"-3/4".
3) A longer rear brake line. What you want is part number EL-0762-022-002 from spiegler. I already did the measurement and installed it, it works great. You can double check on your own but this worked for me.
4) A small bracket to offset the brake fluid reservoir or a small length of tubing to replace it. Your call.

Considering S4R rearsets go for between $100 and $200 on ebay and the parts listed above can be all be had for under $80, I think this is absolutely the MOST cost effective way to lose the stock chicken wings from a 796 or 1100. There is absolutely no change in foot position over stock, which I really liked anyway.

Pics and stuff to come later or tomorrow. Bottom line it looks GREAT!

or wait and get ones from the 1100Evo. Either works if you are okay with the stock peg position.

Take a closer look at the evo rearsets, the brake line routing is different than the earlier bikes meaning you'll need a new rear brake line at least. That plus the fact that there are no used evo rearsets out there means it won't be the most cost effective way to go, not yet at least.

Took some pics, will upload them tomorrow at work.

Point taken with regards to the cost effectiveness of the S4 rearset option and it is something that I have looked into.  Interested in your pictures to see how this looks.  With regards to the evo rearsets, true there may be none currently available used but that won't always be the case so it might be a future option.  With regards to the brake line, the routing is different because of the ABS system but I think you're right that the brake line might need to be a custom.

Thanks for the information regarding the S4 set up on our bikes, I may have to have another look at them as a short term solution until I can decide on which of the available rearsets are the right ones for the long run.

I too will be looking at the evo rearsets in the future to see if they're a worthwhile upgrade. In the mean time, pics!

Still to come, re-installing the master cylinder reservoir with a custom bracket. Current the master is capped.

Have you measured the position of the foot pegs in comparison to the stock pegs? I'm also interested in doing away with the "chicken wings" but i do not want to bring the pegs up any higher or further back than they already are.

btw, now every time i look at my stock pegs all i can think of is chicken wings. thanks.  laughingdp

I installed one S4R and one stock peg, looked from the front and top and they are identical. There is no movement of the pegs forward, back, up or down by going with this setup over stock. For me that's a benefit. I personally think the stock pegs are great, especially with the higher riser I installed from the 796.

Looks great! Shopping time!  Is it just the S4R rearsets that are black? This was the one reason I had abandoned the idea was my search was one coming up with the silver ones and I wasn't happy with the look.

Correct, I'm on an 1100s and installed the higher bar riser from the 696/796 and now also the 1100evo.

As far as I know, all of these style rearsets, (S4R and all the sssa 1000's) only come in silver. You will have to powder coat them black.
