"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

KTMracerx009

Ok here is the low down.
18 thousand on the bike, timing and tune up was done at 1600. Has aftermarket parts and comes with oem parts... Sounds like a deal?

ducatiz

All sounds great to me.  Are you local to him?

I am partial to yellow ducatis... The upgrades look very nice.

the road racing exhaust alone makes it interesting to me, those are fairly rare.  completely under the bike so your rear end is clean.

Yeah I am in love with the bike all I need to do is get off of work before some one else picks it up

It's a down economy, bikes aren't moving that fast for the most part.

Prices are down too.  SHop around to see what a similar bike has sold for -- completed auctions on ebay is a good source.

Bikes that sold for 5000-6000 a few years ago now sell for 3500-4000.  Even "rare" ones like SP and FE models.

I'll play the devil's advocate here:

The bike is listed as a Monster Dark, but has a yellow tank. Didn't all the darks have matte black? If so why is this one yellow? Sure maybe the seller just liked yellow or maybe the original tank was damaged.
KBB Shows that bike as having a *retail* value of 3710, but he/she wants 3995. And the retail price is an average of what *dealers* are asking for the bike in perfect condition.
Brembos stop better than his GSXR? Uh OK. Marketing. I'd suggest he bleed the brakes on his GSXR.
Changed the instrument cluster? See comment re: tank above.

Is this a nice bike? Surely - especially since he has original parts. *but* aftermarket parts don't really mean that much (unless you are the one doing the selling!)
Also, it *is* 11 years old. I like old bikes (OK, it's a sickness), but I'm willing to deal with them when they have problems.

Does it have 18,000 miles or 1,800? (wasn't sure if that was a typo or the 1600 was). 18,000 is a lot of miles (not that a modern bike well cared for shouldn't well surpass this with no problems, but 18K is 18K and is a reason for you to get him to drop his price).

Not trying to be a jerk, but I personally have (several times) thought a bike was the sh*t and overpaid. I'm sure I will again. Allz I'm saying is this bike is not a deal. It is what appears to be a well cared for 11 year old bike, which is going for over the KBB value. This gives you a position of strength in the bargaining department. Remember, the seller is doing you no favors so it won't hurt you to be tough on him.

I'd talk the guy down 500 bucks. He can go on about the exhaust and all that - to which I'd say "fine, return it to stock and I'll give you 3K for it. you can then sell the exhaust for the difference. the only reason I'm even looking at this old bike is because of the stuff on it" (and stress the old :)). Many times people have walked away from a sale only to get a call a day later with the seller asking if you're bringing cash.

As ducatiz points out, it's a buyers market right now. There are *lots* of Monsters out there.

For instance, here's a newer S2R800 with only 6000 miles and I'm guessing the guy would sell for less than asking as he's also looking for a few hundred more than KBB:

So there - the jerk perspective! (But seriously, Monsters are awesome, but that doesn't mean you should overpay, and you want the bike you get to be a great experience)

And another thing! :)

Just noticed that the 3rd picture in the CL ad - the peg hangers are a different color than the other two. So the pics were not all taken at the same time. How old are they? If you look at the bike, check for scratches on the frame / swingarm. There's a chance this bike has been down, which might explain the replaced tank / cluster / hangers.

yeah talked tohim again, he is the second owner of the bike and said that the bike is a DARK but the original owner bought the yellow tank off of ebay.

Huge +1 there. Parted out my M900 because there weren't any serious buyers (just scammers, tossers and the like).

KBB trade-in for that bike is $2,835 while retail (in excellent condition) is $4,065. So there's definitely some leverage in there for you.

One of the great things about these bikes is that they've been around for quite a while so, aside from the occasional electric gremlin, they tend to be pretty reliable.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

No. The un-clear coated black was most common, but not the only. The did make a silver 'dark' 620

But there wasn't a yeller one ever
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

I'd go for the 98 M900. Cheapest and nice add-ons already on the bike (exhaust, adjustable forks, some bling).

Mechanically the engine in Monsters is about as reliable as they get. The Desmo has been around since before most of us were born and it's been constantly refined and improved. The electric system, on the other hand, is sometimes a bit finnicky, other times a real pain in the @$$. That's why I personally prefer pre-fuel injection bikes. You loose a bit in power and gadgets, but you gain in reliability.

I have seen all three of those before and my vote would be for #2...

#1 is missing the mirrors(has those cheap bicycle bar end mirrors), the rear seat cowl and the front fairing and yet it is "stock"...who knows what else is in err...

#3 has had that bike up for sale for well over 6 months and is still trying to sell it...he has had it on Ebay...god knows what is really wrong with it...there must be some reason why it hasn't sold or something wrong he hasn't disclosed...

#2 is a new bike on the market, looks like some nice decent mods...decent looking shape and the pricing isn't unreasonable...
