I am looking to purchase my first bike and thought I had found it when I discovered the bike has at least one glitch that I would like to understand before everything else is finalized.

2004 Ducati Monster 620 Capirex (1600 mi):
Issue is dent in gas tank to right of "DUCATI". My question for y'all is what should my expectation be regarding removal of said dent or repair of tank. This is not something I am going to attempt, so I plan on having a professional do the work if possible. Any recommendations on a dent removal company or bodyshop? Guess on cost? As a beginner, part of me thinks I should leave it as I might drop it and repeat the damage. However, I do need to understand the cost of repair and possible devaluation should I choose to proceed.  My local mechanic buddy has not seen the bike, but suggested I go ahead and replace the tank (estimated $500, but that seems low to me).

Thanks y'all!

new tanks can run up to $1400 i believe.
That's a brand new one from the factory, through a dealer.

dent repair and repainting will prob be around $500

If it's your first bike then don't do anything about it for a while.  You are probably going to drop it and just make another dent.  Ride it for a year and then when it is time to put the bike up for winter find someone who can fix it and give them the tank.  $500 is about the norm.

Yup keep the tank for now.

Very few miles, willing to bet the belts are original, get them changed asap.

Cool bike.

I have a similar dent in mine, just on other side. I am planning on sending it to here. http://motorcyclepaintlessdentrepair.com/testamonials.html I did not get a quote yet though it'll be over the winter.

Cool bike.

Thank you.  When I saw the pictures for the first time I smiled (didn't see the dent until later, but it's a zit on a supermodel).

I'm sure the belts are original.  What will a new set of belts run, approximately?

Thanks!

mid-range....$75?

About the dent though, every Ducati has that dent. Mine did when I got it and it still does!

The belts are around $50, plus labor. $75 is a fair ballpark to have them done. If you figure you'll probably want to get an oil change at the same time, it might be closer to $100-$125 out the door.

+1 to keep the dent for now, change the belts, change the oil.

I'm on my phone, so I could just be missing them, but it looks like the bike doesn't have frame sliders.  Since this is your first bike, I highly recommend sliders.

Looks like a really nice bike  [thumbsup]

It was great meeting "The Dude" at long last.   She brought us some epic beer.

A 2004 Ducati Monster 620 Capirex, huh? The dent may affect the aerodynamics of the bike limiting your top speed to a mere 139mph.

Thanks y'all!  I found your advice and information helpful.  I'm really excited about getting the bike.  Now, I have to find a shipping company to get it from NJ to TX.

I'll try to post some pictures when it arrives.

Cheers!
