SO I'm in the market for a truck.....  looking at a lot of options.

Budget - $13K

Would prefer to have seating arrangements that would allow 3 carseats abreast in the back in a pinch.  I'm having a hell of a time finding dimensions of the cargo box, specifically the height of the tailgate.  I don't have a favorite brand.  Nissan titan crew cab, chevy crew, dodge, etc...

Only found one so far, but I'm thinking it might be more than I need.

04' 2500 LT crew cab.  75K miles, loaded out.  $13K (friend price at work) - seems like an awesome price, but do I really need a 3/4 ton truck??
  - drawbacks are the 13-15mpg

Unless there are major gearing differences or a different motor, you're not going to see too much of a difference in mileage between the different ratings.

The 2500 is a gas motor btw, if I found one with those miles in a diesel I'd have jumped on it already :)

Looking at mileage, you are right....about the same between all of the full size/crew cabs.

I have a 2008 Chevy, 2wd, Silverado 1500 series, crew cab. I like it but not as much as my previous 2002 Silverado, 2wd extended cab. Both have standard issue Vortec V8s and both get the same gas mileage. My main beef is the 4 door crew cab is ridiculously tall. There is really no ground clearance advantage with the crew cab and I feel like I'm driving a monster truck for no damn good reason. I bet the tops of the bed rails are damn near a foot taller than the 2002. Try reaching over the side and grab a screwdriver off the bed floor! [roll] I have to stand up on the spokes of the rear wheels and use them like a ladder to reach stuff in the bad. And due to the crew cab's extra length the bed is about a foot shorter. My 5'4" wife HATES getting in and out of the cab. I'm 5'9" and I'm not that crazy about it... but I've learned to deal with it. Yeah, I know... get loop steps or a step rail mounted. [bang]

Don't get me wrong, I do like the new truck and I needed the full size four door cab for hauling the family around. That part is much nicer than the "mini" rear doors/less back seat room on the '02 ext. cab. I just hating getting a nose bleed getting up in the bed or the cab. Too tall for no good reason. I don't know which company started the monster truck look but now they all are built that way... Ford, Dodge, Toyota, etc. :P Oh well, my two cents. Good luck with the truck hunt. [thumbsup]
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

Probably optimistic on those mileage numbers. That truck has the 6 liter and, I think, a 4.11 rear end. All the research I did shows that truck to get 11-12

I ended up with an 04 1500 crew cab 4x4 with the 5.3 and like it. I do wish it were better on gas though. 16 in mixed city-hwy. 16.5 full tank on the slab going to dimby with two bikes in the back plus all our stuff.

18 full tank on the slab unloaded.

All the Chevy's of that era have some electrical problems, potentially.  Its also common for the heat-air mix door to stick resulting in heat from some vents and air from others at the same time.

Not hard fixes though. Just annoying.  13k is a deal if its 4wd and not rotted with that mileage.

Not 4x4, but it's clean.  Bought to haul a boat that never made it.  Guy just recently put on new tires, water pump, and replaced some warn steering bits on it.  It drives nice, but damn it's going to be tough going from the merc TD that sees 30mpg to something like this.

I guess I'll keep looking around, but the deal on the 3/4 ton gives me the same price as a 1/2 ton crew cab but with worse mileage.

Toyota Tacoma 4dr Prerunner. It will last forever (or as long as you want it) good gas mileage and will hold its value.

On a semi-related note, I wish someone would get a clue and offer what amounts to an updated/modern version of a Chevy El Camino or Ford Ranchero here in the states (like the Aussie utes). Enough room to carry a bike with the gate down, AWD, and at least 25 MPG on the highway.

I'd buy one today.

Sounds like a ridgeline?
except I'd assume that it rides and gets fuel economy like a Pilot, none of which I was impressed at all with in the one I had to drive almost 400 miles yesterday. Did not like it one bit.  :P

No. They're more truck, less car. Big, ugly and gutless too.
