Febreeze and Clorox are making a friggin' killing off me!  I scold them and bring them to the poo and put them in there kenel for an hour or so.  Any suggestions?  I'm about to lynch them.

Watch their behavior.  When you see them start to circle an area looking, Make a routine of something like a phrase "Go Outside" "Chore Time" "Go Potty" etc. then leading them to the door and putting them outside.  Watch until they go, and don't let them in until they do.  Use it EVERY TIME and they'll be good to go in a very short amount of time.

Yeah I did that when we potty trained them.  Now they want to relapse for some reason, it's strange.  I am just trying to stay consistent with them.  I know when they start doing that again it takes a couple of weeks to get out of it again, worst case.

Oh btw, they are 1 and 2 1/2 years old.

Keep them in crates.

Use Nature's Miracle.

Are they stressed?

Have you moved?

Nature's Miracle rocks! I get it at PetSmart. Enzyme based odor remover, much better than Febreeze. We don't have dog mess/odor problems but I have used it for other reasons.

Not to rub it in (no pun intended) but thankfully our mature dog we adopted from a rescue group was already trained to ring a bell on the back door when she needed/wanted out. I have the bells hanging on a long piece of ribbon from the back door handle. When we first brought her home I showed her the bells, rattled them and 2-3 hours later she was nudging them with her snout to be let out. She's smater than I am! laughingdp

Good luck with the pup problem. I agree... have they been stressed? Like a move, etc.?

I don't think they're stressed.  They might be, subconsciously.  I just came back from Afghan, so they might be just getting used to papa being home laying down the law.

Not trying to be anything but helpful...

I have a close friend that went to Iraq.

He came back a different man.

dp's probably right, the smells will be different and a "new leader" could easily cause it.

Give them time, and plenty of chances to "go" outside.

With all due respect:  The above can certainly add to their stress.  Kennels, like dens, are a canine's safe haven.  Not so much if they're tossed in there under stressful conditions

<edit>:   Re the above statement:  And then you put them in the crate when you're away (?) - which causes more confusion and stress because they think that's punishment when in fact it's their "home" while you're out (in  your mind).  Does that confusion they may have make sense?

What's worked for past and current pups and fosters, is praise, praise, praise and letting them outside to do their business - a lot (followed by the praise).  We use the word "hurry up" so they eventually learn that's the job they're supposed to do (not that it always works).

Consistent feeding times, no people food ever, and control of treats will be a big help so you shouldn't ever have to invest in Nature's Miracle, FeBreeze or any other cleaners.

Rubbing the noses in the poo has not been a proven training/correction method.

They might also benefit from a refresher training course (at home or at a pet store or w/a trainer) - helps with the mental exercise dogs need.   We really enjoyed clicker training!

Remember, losing your cool w/them isn't going to help and it may take some time for them to finally figure it out, again.

Good luck and keep us posted!!!    waytogo

The jingle bells sound cool!  Haven't personally seen a dog use them but have also heard they are easy for them to figure out.

Yeah, try it. She took right to it in a brand new strange house filled with unknown people. It's like when I taught my old dogs years ago to use the dog door flap. It was a Godsend! This time I think our current dog trained us to react to the bells! laughingdp I think she rings it for fun sometimes just to rattle our cage and make sure we are still trained up. Wink

A K9 centipede.......ew.

I had a Jack Russell that, we suspect, spent his younger days in a puppy mill.  He was most happy while surrounded by his own poo.
