7500 mile service
«
on:
September 06, 2012, 03:09:03 PM »
I just hit 7500 miles on my 696 Monster and did some calling around to find out what the 7500 mile service is gonna take me for. I called Colemans in FC, they quoted me between $1000-$1100. Speeds Cycle in Elkridge quoted around $500, haven't talked to Ducpond yet.
I know there have been other postings on this, but big difference in price. Speeds is about 50 mile from me but definitely worth the trip if they are telling me right.
Anyone have any experience or opinions with Speed's service?

No FHE with Speeds but have heard they don't have the greatest of service. Been to DucPond but not for service. Some folks here take their bikes to DucPond. Not sure about prices but service is supposed to be great.
You could cut down on the price if you did the belts and oil change yourself....

Been to speeds a couple times. Service wasn't bad but wasn't great either.
Had to take it back after my 18k service there for an oil leak that wasn't there before they serviced the bike. They took care of the leak for free but did have to leave the bike there for a couple days.
I've heard Ducpond is a very good shop but I don't have any FHE

I think the main issue with DucPond is how far they are from the DC area: you need to tow your bike out and back... I've heard mixed to negative reviews from Colemans in part due to their loooooong turn around time.
I don't know what's involved with the 7500M service on the electrical side (Throttle Bodies sync, error codes check ... ?) Jim aka Meerkat might know more about this, I think he has the right cables/software.
But you could handle the mechanical side on your own, well ... I would, but then I'm "The Mad King"!
Seriously tho, the main things would be to change the oil (Full Synth) and filter (if it's due), clean up the chain and check for wear, bleed the brakes, maybe change the fork oil, check/grease your steering head bearings, and last but not least check your valve clearance. If the clearance is out of spec then you could buy the shims or take it to Speeds (or wherever) just for that.

When getting quotes from shops it helps to get itemized ones and their per hour labor rates. One place might be quoting on a bigger list of items than another. So just compare apples to apples. But yeah... colemans does tend to be the more/most costly option.

Thanks for the input guys. I forgot about Battley, I'll give them a call also.
I change my oil every 3000 anyway, IMHO 7500 miles is pretty long on a air cooled engine full synthetic oil or not. I added an oil cooler BTW which made a big difference keeping temps down.
I'll do the oil, belts, chain myself but wouldn't mind having someone who knows what they're doing check the valves. I"m getting an intermittent engine light ever since I put the race ECU on, need to have that looked at.

I just called around about my 7500 mile service.
Coleman's FC wanted $750-900 labor, plus cost of parts and it was going to take 5 days turnaround.
Battley wanted $600 labor (~6 hrs), plus cost of parts (~$250 approx quote given over the phone). Not sure if Battley was same day, but they had schedule openings the next week and said they were just going to have an easier time getting me in from here out.
Battley did my 600 mile service. They forgot to reset the maintenance light (turned on as I left the lot) and about 2k miles later the oil filter loosened up. Other than those items, no issues.

Lame they didn't tell you, but no way to reset that light until it comes on. They can't cancel it in advance, unlike some cars.
Would be curious to hear what Duc Pond charges for a 7.5K on a 696/796/1100EVO though.

Took my S4R to Ducpond 1 yr ago for the 6k mile service. It was around 800.00...new belts, 6 openers/8 closers and a couple things here and there. They had it for 6 weeks, but I also told them "take your time" I don't need it.

Thanks! With a 2V might get out of there for $1K with tires then. Donnie needs to trace a mixture/cold start fault under warranty. Probably needs a sensor or new ECU as it's a weird, intermittent thing and DNA had no clue. Donnie also has had nothing similar with any other 796. I'll give him 2 weeks including anything he might need from Bologna.
Nathan turns around parts from Italy in 5 - 7 days based on past experience & DHL.

you'de be one of the 1st I have heard of having that kind of feeling with Speed in a long time ( outside of those who have long standing relationships with him and service there).

I ended up taking my 696 to Colemans on Monday for the 7500 mi service. I got it back this afternoon, only 2 days, not too bad. Total cost was a little over $800 and that was with a 25% off labor coupon I had. Parts were around $200, he replaced the belts, plugs, adjusted the valves, oil and filter change and checked everything over.
I'm a little surprised it needed new plugs and timing belts at 7500 miles but the tech said it needed them.
I made the mistake of walking through the showroom today, fell in love with a yellow Streetfighter 848. I'm thinking it might be time for an upgrade. Holy shit is that thing sweet.
