Filling A Need

I hope this idea takes off because it is rather general and could lead to the availability of parts for you!

I am looking at starting a manufacturing side-job and I lack the biggest part of the system, The IDEA....

I am reaching out to all who visit DMF for thoughts on what you would like to see made available that doesnt exist yet.
Post any needs you might think of for your ride.
Post ideas for parts or devices that you would like to see made for you.
Post comments about improvements on already existing solutions.

I will try to keep up with this thread more so than usual so that I can bounce ideas around and come up with products that you the people of DMF want to see created.

I've thought about a sort of modular luggage system for a while.  It would have to be compatible with those of us who have tail chops though.  As far as I know, most or all of the systems available bolt on to the underside of the stock beer tray.  Maybe something with round clamps that bolt to the frame rails and possibly utilize the passenger peg mounts?  I had some stuff drawn up but it's been since lost in the fray. 

Possible modular options:

- Back rest for pillion
- Horizontal luggage rack (with or without sealable trunk).  This should be as wide or wider than the passenger seat so you could tie down duffle bags and other large items.
- Suitcase accommodations for the commuters
- Saddle bags (both hard and soft)
- Drink holder (don't laugh.  I would totally use this )
- Helmet lock
- Extra tie down points (like Molly straps on a GI pack)
- Bazooka

I'm sure folks could chime in on more.

A back-rest that clamps onto the grab bars on the older monsters. My wife likes to ride with me sometimes, but is concerned that her ass is going to slide off the end of the seat. I think there used to be some company that made something similar, but they're long gone.

I will have to take some pictures of the rack I designed and built for my trip from NY to LA. It clamps to the grab bars on the tail and has to pelican cases that lock onto it. room enough for a tent and a huge drybag pull of gear inbetween them.
I think a better helmet lock is a good idea. The cable under the seat is a pain.
There are quite a few drink holders out there that mount to the bars.

My girlfriend and mom say the same thing!   
I will look into this. The problem with this is that the seating position is so leaned forward and high off the ground that for the passenger to be comfortable sitting back there would have to be arm rests or something to keep them from going side to side. All and all that would be alot of extra on your tail when no passenger is there. But if she is just interested in a little keeper on the back to make sure she doesnt slide on off the back then thats a much more feasible device to figure out and mock up. See what she says?

What materials are you talking here? Plastic, fiberglass, metal?

I'd like;
ultra heavy bar end weights that fit the aluminum handlebars. (they have a smaller i.d. than steel handlebars)
a much enlarged seat fairing that opened for storage.
shock mounted handlebar risers.

Metal and fiberglass for sure I could work with without much trouble but plastic is a bit harder to form. Cut and bolt kinda stuff though can be any material.

How heavy we talking?
Fairing with storage is a good one. You are referring to the cowl correct?
There are clipons that rise maybe 3" arnt there? let me look.

How about some useful tail bags with the tail cover still staying on.  In other words, a modular housing from metal that ties to the grab rails and whatever else that allows for mounting a tail bag and easy to take off and on (clips, rivets and so on ). Many can use tank bags because their tanks aren't metal and the Ducati stuff is expensive and fugly IMO.  Benefit:  no scratching tank or other parts

Pictures would be great.  I've had the idea for years, and I think even started a CAD drawing at some point, but that was years ago and I've slept since then

Drink holders don't work well with clip-ons.

As far as the tie down points, I don't think you can tie on too much gear.  It sounds like your setup has quite enough for the length of trip you would want to take on a monster anyway, but it's nice to have options, depending on what each individual user is going to want to transport.  I think having a wide grate horizontal platform over the passenger seat would be great, that way you could mount gear that's not necessarily motorcycle specific (like your dry bag).

And there's always room for a bazooka.  Always.

She's not looking to lean back. She just wants a little bump-stop for her ass. I'm thinking something that curves around the back of the seat and sticks up maybe 6-8 inches, with some sort of padding on it.

I saw the Monstrack backrest. Pretty nice. A more discreet version might be better IMO.
I was thinking about a better cupholder today and (for monsters anyway) A cup holder that mounted to the vanity bolt locations on the filler cap ring around the gas cap would be good for any handle bar/clipon setup because it doesnt matter what you steer with.
The holder wouldnt need to be self leveling either because the resultant force on the liquid in the cup would always be toward the gas tank (per the dynamics of motorcycles).
But a single axis swivel would be good for the hard acceleration and stopping and wheelies and endos.

I'm going to see about taking those pix of the cargo rack I made today. Stay Tuned.

Monster owners have to drink too!  As far as I'm concerned, aesthetics and what my bike looks like to other people can take a hike when it comes to touring or commuting.  If I'm going to bike night or a show, sure I want her looking her best.  Otherwise I'm in it for the functionality and I'm not above a cup holder just because of what make or model it is.
