Now THAT is cool.
BTW, did anyone else think the opening shot was a visual reference to the opening sequence of
Lawrence of Arabia
? Pretty cool, if so...

How could a "sport" be this dangerous? Is it true that in the last 20 years there as a fatality in 17 of those years? That is a VERY high risk factor....this race to me is the most perplexing & amazing thing in all of motorcycling. Does anyone have mixed feelings about this race? Part of me thinks its just wrong. This is more than a "race"....just speechless at this point after watching that video...watching again

Thanks for posting.
My feeling is that all the riders know what the risks are, they're taking it willingly. Now it would be quite different if they were forced in to it by circumstance, but it doesn't seem that way. There are a lot of other races they could ride in. It's basically the decision we've all made as riders, on a much larger scale.

Read the book "Burning Rubber" by Charles Jennings. It chroncles F1 racing from the beginning to the present era. It wasn't all that unusual to have multiple drivers dying in a single race weekend. It was a brutal sport up until Senna's death, at which point they got serious about driver safety. Very good book.
"Ring of Fire" by Rick Broadbent is a similar book about MotoGP. Also very good.
People watching racing now have no idea what dangerous is.

Triple J you have a great point...I guess the idea of real danger specially in a commercialized event is indeed foreign to most in this day and age. I just wonder how commercialized and corporatized an event like this can get? This might be a stupid question but have any motogp riders ever crossed over to tt or vise versa?

As I said before, the IOM used to be part of the GP Circuit.

Yes: the TT is more than the regular Motogp. However, it just seems more brutal because of the nature of the crashes.
We as a people are attracted to danger. To put things in perspective, every year four people die directly because of football injury. Another nine die from indirect injury from football as well.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_issues_in_American_football#section_1
So how can a commercially broadcasted event be this brutal? It happens here as well, which is not as aware of it. Granted, the football pool size is much much larger compared to a single event, but it does serve to illustrate that there are risks in everything. And yes, these people have massive make the beast with two backsing balls
