Bingo.

I understand getting rid of a litter of kittens or puppies, I was talking more generally about owning any pet for a long term and discarding. People who get rid of pets they have had for a long time are weak and pathetic IMHO.

What about people who get deployed?  What about people who get divorced and the spouse who keeps the house and gets all the child support, doesn't want the dog, and the person who was evicted can't afford anything that allows dogs?  What about a couple that has a dog and then have a child later on who is allergic to pets?  The blanket statement is unfair, but I do agree that people who have pets and then just decide that they're too much trouble are weak and pathetic.

Weird, I got called weak and pathetic by the girls I thought were too much trouble to keep around....
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

I understand this line of thinking...I have had dogs that were like family members and that I could NEVER part with.  Slept on my bed.  Went everywhere with me (at least when I took the cage).  Protected my children.

I have also owned hunting dogs.  Good dogs but they did a job, performed a function, lived in a dog house outside and which I had no great attachment too.  My point is people have different relationships with their pets.  Not all are as close and personal as some clearly are.

Now lets get this out in the open too, cause everybody is afraid to say it.  If you eat chicken (or pork or beef) shut the make the beast with two backs up about killing cats.  Animals are animals and if you aren't  vegetarian get off your hypocritical high horse.  My grandfather would shoot a dog that was too old to hunt...cause it was a dog.  It was taking precious family resources (food) and not giving anything back to the family anymore.  I'm not saying I would shoot a dog but I don't think he was wrong for it.  Animal life does not have the same value as human life IMHO.

Our next door neighbors probably have close to four dozen in their back yard if you need some.   :-[

Umm,
One reason NOT to offer free kittens, puppies, or rabbits ANYWHERE is that make the beast with two backsheads with big snakes use them as a free meal for their "pet".

Yeah but there are far more legitimate people looking for pets and asking for a small fee will not stop the snake people.  Once again we have groups like PETA trying to protect us from ourselves by forcing everyone to restrict their activities to only those deemed acceptable by the lowest common denominator.  Kittens can be eaten so let's not allow adoption, motorcycles can kill so let's only drive cars, guns can be used to commit crimes so take them away from law abiding citizens, etc.....

One biotech company I worked at, one of the employees got caught stealing leftover mice from the animal facility and selling them to pet stores for reselling as snake food.  Apparently it was quite lucrative.

After they had been tested on? What do you think happened to the snakes that ate them?

Yeah, a questionable practice at best.  Hope the snakes were ok. :-\

Hi everyone, I just joined the forum.  How did you find this forum?  Well, I did a search through Google Alert for the following term, "I Hate Craigslist."  Posts like that give me the opportunity to inform you of our site which just launched on June 1st.  We are out of Seattle and a hybrid of Craigslist and eBay.

Now I do have some experience with the Pet forum.  After purchasing a dog (on a whim) for my children, four months later it was obvious that I made a mistake.  I needed to find a home for my dog, someone who could give him the attention he needed.  When I posted on Craigslist I was immediately flagged.  This happened time and time again.  I was not one to give up so I kept posting and luckily before my ad was flagged I was able to hook up with a very nice woman who just lost her long time companion who happened to be the exact breed that I had (Cockapoo).  I didnt feel guilty for one moment as I knew this woman would give the dog the attention and love that I could not.  So it did take some work but I was successful.  Thankfully the buyers of pets also know how the flaggers work so they are on it as soon as an ad comes up.

Anyway, back to the subject of our new site.  The name is www.bonanzle.com  I will not fill your forum with details, I will tell you though that it is free.  Just take a quick look and tell me what you think.  We are getting some great feedback from all that have been there.  Oh yeah, we do have a freebie section that you can list pets too!

Take care,

It's not PETA people necessarily that are flagging-there's just a bunch of bored losers on CL that like to flag most of the pet ads. Especially puppies and kittens.
As far as the pound not being a good deal-you've(sorry forgot your name) not had many pets, have you? I just adopted a kitten a couple of months ago and have spent roughly 1000.00 on him already for kitten shots, neuter, declaw etc etc. If I'd gotten him from the pound I would have paid 50 bucks, because right now they're having a special on all animals, even kittens and puppies, and they've already been fixed and had their first shots.
Try putting them in a box and going to the grocery store. You'd probably have better luck that way. Or put your phone number in the Listing title along with "free kittens" and you should get around the flaggers that way. The title will stay up for a bit after the ad has been flagged.
I'm vegetarian myself, but I'm not a PETA crazy. I don't like animal abuse though. At all. I think it's good that rescues are careful about who they let adopt their animals. After all, the animals in question have already had a hard time of it, might as well make sure they find a better home the next time around, eh? You'd be suprised at how many people get animals and find they have no way of taking care of it financially, or that the dog they adopted for their apartment actually needs a yard and it's too much trouble to take him for walks two or three times a day. Every day. In all weather. Or that they just don't have time for it. The excuses are many and varied.
Spay and Neuter should be everyone's mantra...so. Um. yeah. Off my soapbox now..

the biggest problem with getting them from a rescue place is the ridiculous price you have to pay to "adopt" anything.  my local shelter charges 110 for an adoption fee.  im not gonna pay that much for a mutt dog... EVER.  i know they neuter/spay them, but that doesnt cost that much.

Funny this came up..FWIW
Last week I had my two Dals neutered 7-14-08.  I wish That I was charged $110 for each of them. My total came to $473.00 for the both of them. I refuse to go into shelters,I'd end up taking all of the dogs home with me, I do donate 3  50lb. bags of dog food each month to them. These shelters make NO MONEY off of the animals. Their function is to find the animal a GOOD home and not another home that was like the one they came from.............

You got off cheap. Mr.Miles(my kitten)was abandoned in someone's front yard and they brought him and two other kittens into the vet clinic when I was there with my dog. Of course I took one.  [roll] The vet offered a discounted kitten package, that included shots, felv/fiv test etc. That was 495. Then when I took him in for neuter and declawing, that was another 500. (that also included bloodwork, anesthesia, pain killer and a microchip) Shoot, the microchip alone was 80 bucks, and that was with a discount. So I'd say 110 is a bargain. I probably should have adopted from the pound...my husband would have been happier with me! LOL However, I saw that cute little face and had a moment of weakness. Of course I wouldn't trade him for anything, he's just a crazy adorable kitten.  ;D
