I'm looking to sell my beloved 1993 M900, and I took it to a local shop to see about a roadworthy on it, so I could get the sale process started.  The mechanic took one look at it and rattled off a bunch of stuff that would fail the bike, including a few that were on the bike when I bought it from the dealer.

Specifically, he said the blue-tinted headlight would fail, and the Termi pipes (he kept calling it an 'exhaust bung' but maybe this is an Australian thing or my own ignorance, I have no idea what that is, but he said specifically that Termi pipes would fail).  He said the seat has some cracks in it (the cover is stretched at one point), so that needs to be fixed, there was metal showing through rubber on a foot peg, so that would fail.  All the discs would fail (Where can I verify the required widths?  Is 3.49mm too thin on the back?)  Front sprocket would fail (and would have to be replaced along with the rear, even though the rear is only a year or so old).

Does all this ring true?  He basically suggested I let the rego lapse and sell it 'as is' because fixing it all would be (ballpark) $2500, which is half what I was hoping I could get for the bike.

So yeah, my first bike sale and it's sort of hit a snag.  Any advice and/or confirmation would be appreciated.

UPDATE: yeah, the discs are too thin (I found the user's manual).   Some of the other things seem a little bit aggressive: the seat, for example.  According to what I've found, a seat can fail if it has structural issues, sharp edges etc.  Stretch marks shouldn't fail, if I'm reading this right.

If your handy on the spanners,
Chinese brake rotor on eBay front/rear should be no more than $300 and go up from there for name brand,or used.

If the seat cover looks Dodgy get it recovered anyway, shouldn't be to expensive, Will help sell the bike. Wink

The head light probaby just has a plastic tint on it, peal it off? Wink

Billet footpegs on eBay from $40. Cheesy

With the Termis, i think he means baffles not bungs, that go in the end off the zaust should quiet it enough to pass. though baffles might be hard to find Huh?
some one might lend you some sock cans to get it passed
Second hand  stock mufflers usually go cheap on eBay.

I would fix the obvious,Noisy zaust a priority, head light lense, seat, foot, pegs  ,a good clean and degrease, look like you tried to do a bit. Tongue

Leave the rotors and go some  were else, for the inspection Tongue

rob's advice is spot on, i'm fairly sure you can buy new footpeg rubbers to replace your worn ones, to recover the seat go to john moorhouse, google "ergo seats" for his details, he's very good and not expensive at all. Aftermarket rotors are quite cheap, did you get the roadworthy started with paperwork? cause if you did you can't take it elsewhere until he completes the 2nd inspection whether it's a pass or fail. If he didn't get started find another place to get it done but thank him for pointing out the obvious fails, which they are, unfortunately.

Of course Rob is right about the alternatives, but to be fair you could spend $2,500 on that stuff ... with the exhaust the big question mark.

Most rotors are $600+ for the pair - new pads add up too, new headlight a couple of hundred, ditto seat, if you replace the chain with the sprockets - another couple of hundred, new stock exhausts probably cost a couple of thou on their own (but that is obviously not the best option) ... haven't even considered labour yet.

So you can take the advice of Rob & Loony or take my advice: don't sell  Tongue

I'd be doing the front rotors and new pads, foot peg rubbers, mufflers and the headlight. Maybe the seat depending on cost. Then find another bike shop to take it to. I've seen lots of used bikes at large bike dealers that have things like aftermarket exhausts, rearsets, fender eliminators etc done out the front for sale but the same shop will fail a customers bike for the same things.

I spent years convincing management and several salesman that there were processes and procedures to be followed and installing such in regard to second hand bikes, the condition they were traded and sold under and preparing them for the floor and I might as well have been talking to the wall most of the time.

I would get people in for rwc and fail them (i was a real nazi) and they would then say, as above, "but this is how I bought it from you".  then I would tell the boss he had to sign the rwc, which he would.  and i'd go back to whatever else I was doing.

You've gotta do what you've gotta do but this sucks for the customer. Funny how we want a pedantic and fastidious mechanic (hopefully not charging by the hour) servicing and repairing the bikes but a casual she'll be right RWC guy.

Fascinating.  I'd much prefer to have a totally legit bike than get away with something I shouldn't.  I think I might just have to get it all checked over by the same shop, if only to save the bucks it'd cost on the pipes and headlight.  Most quality workshops (the independents) don't really want to have their name on the paperwork when the legitimacy is questionable - and that's a position I totally respect.

Fix it up and keep it or at least get another good 6 months out of it.

But dude some of these issues are things you should have been keeping a check on. Basic maintenance and the like. Specially the disc and sprocket thing.

FFS don't run with U\S discs.

Oh for sure, but these things are all borderline necessary at the moment.  They're due, but it's not critical (unless I need a roadworthy). 

But yeah, I won't be riding it a lot until it's fixed.  =)
