2013 EVO M1100 - No more 14 tooth front for me! (and a gearing question)
«

When I was at 600 miles I had the dealer add a 14 tooth front sprocket to my bike as I did not like the stock gearing. After riding 6k on the bike I was putting on the new slave cylinder and noticed a ton of rubber shavings were packed up around it. Those shavings came from the rubber chain guard on the swing arm......
Much more of that and the chain will be eating into my swing arm. So I am off to buy some new gearing and from the sound of it a new chain.
Stock gearing is 15-39 and I am thinking of going 15-42 although to keep the ratio exactly as it is, a 15-41 looks about perfect. Now for the question; In the real world just how different is the 42 over the 41? Is it a large difference? I don't want to gear much lower than it is but 42t sprockets are much more available than 41t's......
Thoughts?
Thanks!

I believe these are available in 41T's:

I went from 15/39 to 15/41 on my 900 and have had no issues.
I believe you're thinking of avoiding multiples.

Going up
2
3 in the rear is the same as going down 1 in the front.
Edit: oops fixed

No... It's roughly, roughly 3 to 1
But let the computers do the maths for you.

Slide Panda is correct, +3 rear = -1 front more or less.

if you had 14/39: 39/14 = 2.7857.
15 x 2.7857 = 41.7857. or 42.
i'd run 15/43 on it personally.

I'm wondering how you have your chain adjusted and/or your rear suspension set up as I've got ZERO signs of guide wear at the same mileage and we have essentially the same chassis.

Chain adjustment has been kept perfect. However the $189.00 rubber guide is well on it's way to replacement
I just ponied up for a quick change 15-43 520 setup and a new chain. Sad as I only have 6k on the chain and sprockets and they show little wear.
Curmudgeon is yours a 2013 or a 2012? I have found a lot of parts on my 2013 that simply don't fit like they should......

I'm curious as to how much wear you saw. I have 3000 miles on my bike with a 14 tooth sprocket. I pulled the sprocket cover to see if there was any aggressive wear and there is a little bit where the swingarm ends and the chain starts to make its turn around the sprocket. Only normal fling and such on the engine case around the sprocket.
I tried to take a pic of what I saw. This was the best I could get. I lifted the chain at the worst part I saw where the swingarm ends.

I've posted a few this times before, when faced with the sane question on my S4RS i put together a quick excel spreadsheet then sorted by ratio
Front Rear Ratio
15 38 2.533
15 39 2.600
15 40 2.667
14 38 2.714
15 41 2.733
14 39 2.786
15 42 2.800
14 40 2.857
15 43 2.867
14 41 2.929
15 44 2.933
15 45 3.000
14 42 3.000
15 46 3.067
14 43 3.071
15 47 3.133
14 44 3.143
15 48 3.200
14 45 3.214
15 49 3.267
14 46 3.286
15 50 3.333
14 47 3.357
14 48 3.429
14 49 3.500
14 50 3.571
as you can see 14/38 and 15/41 are identical for all intents and purposes
