Looks great, I am doing the samething this winter, '76 CB550K.  It came with the same bars, I put the old bars off my Monster on it & the position is pretting good, just need to find a shorter clutch cable.

Looks ok on the surface but the engine needs a tune (maybe more), all wiring needs to be redone, bars HAVE TO GO, needs a new seat, new spokes, and I need to choose another color scheme. But overall I'm pretty happy with it.

having done some resto work, and helped out some others - my advice pic your battles.

That paint looks like it's in good to great shape. If it is... wait on the color change. Do the mechanicals, spokes, electrics etc to get it running well and safe... then see where you're at with time and $$$s.

One of my first bikes right there! (mine was a 76 550F)

Hated that thing, lol. Didn't have the mechanical skills to do what NEEDS to be done to those IMO which is to tear them down, restore every crusty nut and bolt, then start over. They can look soooo sweet when done right. Clubman bars, lower headlights, chop the hideous fenders and lose the awful 30 lb tail light, redo the ancient wiring and lose that crap fuse panel, polish the $hit out of the aluminum engine block with Mothers, black out the wheels and spokes, lose the huge honkin air box, re-route the battery and ditch the hideous side panels, add 4 pod filters, lose the weird sissy bar ginormous turn signal and bracket combo, lose the ridiculous tail light, add shorty upswept megaphones....yep those bikes can look great it's just a lot of work.

The engine is great, peppy and reliable, very fun bike.

Wouldn't mind a real dirt bike... oh and there's actually an old Suzuki in that mix, too... and we have a cafe racer project on the go in this household too (my fiancee also has 3 bikes).

One more bike still wouldn't go astray.

I'm now at two.  My wife would like it to be one but I've got a sixteen year old that is smitten with the Monster.  I'll let him ride it as long as I'm riding the KTM alongside.
Anyways, two is good but I bet three is better.  Especially if the third was the new Super Duke!!!

Just the Monster 796 for me. Almost bought a Bonneville but ended up getting a second car. A Fiat 500 Abarth. Short riding season in CT I couldn't justify 2 bikes.

I don't collect motorcycles (have no where to put them, no desire to keep them, and no money to waste on static displays of awesome). And if I get the urge to look at old motorcycles I go over to the Solvang Motorcycle Museum (haven't been through the doors for about 7 years now, so you can tell how much old iron interests me), but I'm really not that nostalgic about motorcycles. My favorite motorcycle is usually the newest one.  Old motorcycles are.....old, not that interesting, and prone to breakage.  Same with cars.  Everyone is all crazy right now about muscle cars.....I owned them and drove them when they were new, and unless you had the top of line example of a particular model, what you had was a production car, a late 60's/early 70's production car that was full of fail (planned obsolescence). It blows me away how much people are paying for those things.  yeah, they may look cool, but I grew up when they were all over the road and all my friends were driving them.  ho hum.. anywho... At one point I was up to 5 motorcycles, and I realized I only rode 2, so I scaled back and kept the ones I rode.  Right now I have 3 (one is up for sale), and I have a scooter.  And that is plenty. I want to get down to 2 MC's, and upgrade my scooter to a Vespa GTS300 SS se, then I should be set for the next 5 years or so. 

Please don't get defensive about your collections, I really don't care what you collect, I was just stating that collecting "things", no matter what they are is not something I do anymore.  I'm at the point in my life where if I'm not using it, I'm losing it, cause I obviously don't need it.

Im always getting rid of stuff too. I have one Bike right now, I would like to get a dual sport. Two Bikes would be enough.

I have to admit , after years of disliking the new gen Monster I am growing quite fond of the 696 it replaced a recently squashed
under a bus 695 with an insurance pay out. They feel lighter more maneuverable and the engine feels a little more revy.

And I'm starting to like the look.

They are not so bad looking. A little cartoonish... They look way better than that new monster. That thing looks like Chauncha, its probably an awesome bike though.
