I don't collect motorcycles (have no where to put them, no desire to keep them, and no money to waste on static displays of awesome). And if I get the urge to look at old motorcycles I go over to the Solvang Motorcycle Museum (haven't been through the doors for about 7 years now, so you can tell how much old iron interests me), but I'm really not that nostalgic about motorcycles. My favorite motorcycle is usually the newest one.  Old motorcycles are.....old, not that interesting, and prone to breakage.  Same with cars.  Everyone is all crazy right now about muscle cars.....I owned them and drove them when they were new, and unless you had the top of line example of a particular model, what you had was a production car, a late 60's/early 70's production car that was full of fail (planned obsolescence). It blows me away how much people are paying for those things.  yeah, they may look cool, but I grew up when they were all over the road and all my friends were driving them.  ho hum.. anywho... At one point I was up to 5 motorcycles, and I realized I only rode 2, so I scaled back and kept the ones I rode.  Right now I have 3 (one is up for sale), and I have a scooter.  And that is plenty. I want to get down to 2 MC's, and upgrade my scooter to a Vespa GTS300 SS se, then I should be set for the next 5 years or so.

Please don't get defensive about your collections, I really don't care what you collect, I was just stating that collecting "things", no matter what they are is not something I do anymore.  I'm at the point in my life where if I'm not using it, I'm losing it, cause I obviously don't need it.

My view on owning stuff is similar to yours.

4 wheel vehicles to me are appliances. I drive a 2000 ford f150 and when it dies I will buy another older pick-up for $3-$4000.

As for motorcycles, I'm up to 3 and it's killing me. I have my 01 monster 900, a 98 ST2 and 01 ST4 I only bought recently because I couldn't pass up the $3000 price tag on a next to mint bike.

I find 3 stressful and will sell the ST2 in the spring once I clean it up. 3 has me doing maintenance as much as riding and I don't want motorcycles for the purpose of excessive tinkering. I also hate the idea of paying insurance on 3 bikes when I can only ride one at a time. As much as I love the monster I would probably sell it too, if it were worth something. With 110,000 km's on it, I would be lucky to get $2500, so I will keep it.

2 & contemplating a 3rd (although I already baby-sit a '97 M900 for 11 months/year so that's really like 3 & contemplating a 4th...)

I'm at four bikes, they're down in at the bottom there.  It has long been my dream to have a classic/special/non-boring car or bike for every day of the week.  Used to be my ideal was 5 cars, 2 bikes.  Nowadays the formula is closer to even, if not reversed.

Also, its bad luck to have an odd number of motorcycles

I have one monster, but I'm looking for second bike. You need at least two.
I need a superbike, but I've been drooling over the MV turismo veloce 800 since I first seen it!

I do agree there comes a point of diminishing returns for me where I feel I have too many bikes and they're not getting ridden enough.

It's one of the reasons I'm drawn to simple maintenance machines (Harley, Guzzi).

Last time my wife was pregnant and not riding as much we had four (2 for each) and it was a bridge too far.

We might be able to go back to 4 again, but that might be my/our personal limit.

If Jenn's not riding much, then my limit really is 3.

Molly & Syreena, the Italian mistresses

2 running, 1 not

Same here.  Molly has stuck around through the buying and selling of several other bikes because it's a great bike.  The other running one is my wife's Honda Hawk GT, another great bike.  The not running on is a motorcycle with a lot of firsts.  1st ever ridden, 1st ever wheelie, 1st ever crash.  All within the same ride...

Waiting for the local dealer to get in a spare f3 myself  drool. Although they generously offered to make me 4th in line to buy one if I gave them $1k.  laughingdp

Currently just one but that happened only recently.  Most of the time I seemed to have 2 and once in a while three.  Maybe I'll get another one but time & money will tell.

Apologies I had temporarily forgotten why I hadn't posted earlier ... you were after American numbers. I've now remembered so sorry our bikes don't count.
