Hey everyone!

I recently installed a Matris M-05 rear shock on my S2R1K. The shock was designed for use on the 749/999 series of bikes but Jason at Dept. of Suspension told me he had done a few on S2R's so I took the plunge and bought one.

It isn't a direct fit but was still pretty straight forward. Although the shock I installed is an aftermarket product, this install can be done using the factory 749/999 Showa shock as well if you want to step up to a fully adjustable rear shock on your S2R without the high cost.

The main problem with the install is the crankcase breather box and the coil pack for the rear cylinders on the DS motors. The coil pack is mounted from the factory just behind the side panel on the left side of the bike and gets in the way of the shock reservoir so it had to be relocated. Also, the crankcase breather box is in the way as well.

The solution to the breather box problem is to just remove it and install a K&N filter on the outlet on the crankcase. I've seen this mod a few times on TOB so I knew it could be done. Additionally, the voltage regulator is mounted to the breather box so it need a new home as well.

The problem with the coil pack wasn't quite so simple. The coil pack had to be relocated and there isn't much extra slack in the plug wires to move it very far. I ended up fabbing up a plate out of aluminum to mount the coil pack and the voltage regulator under the seat just rearward of where the breather box was.

Here is a picture on the plate with the coil pack and voltage regulator mounted to it.

You'll have to forgive the chips in the paint as I had to remove it after the install to relocate it slightly towards the rear of the bike. I'll get around to pulling it all apart soon and repainting it.

Here are a few pic of the new shock mounted.

All I can say is the Matris stuff is beautiful and works extremely well. I took the bike to the track the day after the install and it is lightyears ahead of the factory installed suspension.

Let me know what you guys think.

Awesome work!  applause I'm about to relocate the coil to make room for a Showa S4R shock on my S2R. What did you use to cut the coil bracket off?

Also, how much is the Matris shock compared to say an Ohlins?

 Thanks.

I actually did't cut off the stock bracket for the coil. It only required that I bend it up and out of the way. I did it this way in case I ever want to put the bike back to stock.

The best deal I found on the Ohlins I wanted was around $900. That was for the DU333 which has the external reservoir and the remote preload adjustment. The Matris retials for around $1600 but I found a great deal on it.  Grin

Yes the shock bolted right up, no problem.

Q

Nope. Both shocks are 305mm in length.

Good Ish Mash.

I need a new rear shock for my S4Rt, and damnit, that Ohlins is over 1K new (the hydr preload adjuster, etc).  I'm gonna see about fitting my stock 999 shock first, but even that would be a HUGE improvement in the SACH (sucks?) POS ducati put on there stock.  Talk about a saggy ass.....

If you want a good deal on an Ohlins contact Dan Kyle racing. He quoted me around $800 for the DU333 which has the remote preload and the remote reservoir.

The DU333 is an awsome shock and I was really close to getting it rather than the Matris. The only thing that turned me off was the length of the hose from the shock body to the remote reservoir. It's pretty long and I didn't like the look of it mounted on the frame on the side of the bike.

FYI, the stock xx9 shocks will not clear the swing arm and/or exhaust manifold rear pipe.

I know but the shock I mounted on my bike was designed for a 999. I had no clearance issues with the exhaust on the vertical cylinder at all. I guess it is a possibility that the stock shock is a little different than the aftermarket one even though it's designed for the same bike.

I believe he was talking about the 999shock on the S4Rs not the S2R1000. I assume the different heads require a different header pipe setup so the 999shock wont fit.
