i actually work with this guy, but took the picture when he passed me on the freeway.  anyway it is a dodge omni GLH 2 seater.   he has done 'minor' engine work (the entire front end is an intercooler  [laugh]) and the rear doors have been shortened.  the doors do still work too, so you can slid a briefcase in behind the seat.  the cell-o phone photo doesn't really do the car justice.   i think it is nearly as short as it is wide, must be a hand full in the twisties.  oh yeah, he also claims sub 2000lb curb weight

Ok I'll put the flame suit on, but I'm curious if you could get more performance #'s on this. If he's running an intercooler it's prolly got a turbo on it. Try to get more info.  [thumbsup] Looks fun, I'd rock it.

I'm guessing it's a 2.2L turbo, unless he swapped it for a 2.5.

I have a friend who is big in to the Dodge turbo cars from the 80's, He's got an Omni GLH and a GLHS.  Cars are pretty damn quick with little $$$ spent.  The Omni is a great sleeper... fast and handle pretty well.  I can't understand why this guy shortened this one... just made an ugly little car uglier, and I'll bet it handles worse than the stocker.

There's a Volvo "pickup" that drives around Portland, Maine. I've seen it on several occasions. Its just an old 850 wagon thats been chopped. Still has the bottom halves of the back doors. That Omni seems like its a higher quality build.

I can't wait until Marquez gets on his level and makes Jorge trip on his tampon string.

An old friend had one of these, the GLHS turbo. Was quite the sleeper car, when mid 80's Mustangs and camaros pulled up he'd would light them up. It produced something in the high 100 horsepower stock, with weight right around 2200 lbs. handled fairly decent also.
I'll update this later at a convenient time Thank you for tuning in.....

he doesn't work in my department, but next time i bump into him ill try to get details.  he is new and a little quite, i tried drilling him for details once and he was pretty tight lipped... in the 'yeah, it's fast, lets leave it at that' sorta way.  you know?

weren't most Omni GLH/S models turbo charged from the factory?  Hence the term GLH...i.e., "Goes Like Hell"?  The S was a Shelby version.

Popeye the Sailor

I saw one some years ago that ran sub 12's in the 1/4 mile. The guy won his division (not sure what division that falls into).

He then took the same car, changed the tires, and went on to win the autox event.

I'm sorry but that's just friggin' cool.

How about a 10-second Plymouth Reliant K-car spanking a Toyota Supra?

Yup.

And the GLHS = Goes Like Hell... Squared.

Ah yes, the short-lived turbo Caravan.

Gotta love sleepers.

I dont think i'd take that on too many twisties. By shortening the car, he's raised the center of gravity. You didnt mention it, but did he upgrade the brakes? I would have widened the track and put bigger brakes on the front.

I used to have Tursimo 2.2 and I lived with a girl who had a regular Omni and I dont think i would have taken it on the twistes reguardless. My Turismo on the other hand was a load of fun on the back roads.

...

no doubt it is an evil handler, he did widen the track though and there can't be much suspension travel as there is no room for the wide tires to go up more than in inch or two.  it's hard to say how the CG was affected since the interior is pretty much gutted.
i don't know about the brakes, they may be off of some other oem application.  they look stock but i think they would be too big to fit in the stock 14" wheel.

btw, according to shelby GLHS is 'goes like hell, sm'more.'

.. I think Carrol Shelby designed the Omni GLH, and gave them their names
