All police officers are the bravest of heros who deserve not only our respect and admiration but also our blind obidience. They way that brave man selflessly stepped in front of that criminal was . . . [wipes away tear] . . . just beautiful. This make me proud to be an American. I think he deserves a medal for keepimh scum like that off of our streets.

Technically, he kept the guy on the streets.... [cheeky]
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

You are ABSOLUTELY right.  I don't know for sure but I would think that NY would have some sort of helmet law.  If it does, this video CLEARLY shows that the scumbag criminal was breaking the law for not wearing a helmet.  (this is based on the assumption that NY does have a helmet law).

Let that be a lesson to YOU bike peddling punk.  Wear your helmet. To protect your noggin when the nice policeman subdues your ass when shoves his knee in the back of your head.

no no..as the article states, he knocked him from the lane onto the curb. he took a violent and obviously dangerous scallywag off the street.

Not to put to fine of a point on it, but if you pause the video at 0:25 you clearly see that he is off of the street by a few feet.  :D

Seeing this, and other police misconduct footage over the past few years, it occurs to me that the camcorder has joined the gun as a deterrent to encroachments on our freedom.
Before the camcorder and the cellphone cam, the cops worried about whether a suspect was armed with a gun. Now, they have to worry about the gun, and the camera. The camera might not kill you, but it'll wreck their career, and in some cases, put the officer behind bars.

it can also prove that there was no inpropriety and save the officer's career.

basically the camera/camcorder helps keep people on both sides honest (or as honest as you can be if you are being arrested)

I know you are not, but it sounds like  you guys making a case for the British style "camera at every corner" system. After all, if you're not doing anything wrong you have nothing to fear, right?  ;) Just ask the guy on the bike.

Am I naive in hoping justice will actually prevail here?

When is the last time the NYPD was held accountable for this kind of stuff?

Seriously, I can't remember.

I love the arguments put forward for those type of cameras. I love even better arguing against them.

You can be very intimidating. I'm sure the CCTV would avert its eyes as soon as the facial recognition program realized it is you.  [cheeky]

That was awesome.  Makes me want to go out and beat a hippie.

Seriously though, it seems that the officer's firing was probably justified.
