Open Clutch Cover Advice

Getting rid of the stock Ducati clutch cover. I need to buy the following parts, yes?

6 x weather proof springs.
6 x  weatherproof clutch spring retainers OR 1 x clutch hub brace.
6 x weatherproof alan bolts (which I think I could get from a hardware store).

Am I missing anything here? Any sage words of advice before I take the plunge?

I haven't taken my clutch apart yet - can't seem to get home before 10pm during the week,.. keen to order some parts!

speedymoto offer a small kit that has the stainless steel springs and anodized alloy retainers, the bolts you can re use or you can buy stainless steel from the hardware, either way, use coppaslip on the threads and tighten just enough to seat them, it's VERY easy to overtighten the bolts and shear them off.

Hi Roy,

If you want to do it on the cheap or in stages, you can just put on an open cover, the springs will be fine but will rust after a while. I got a set of stainless steel springs, coloured retainers, S/S cap head bolts and a throw out bearing in a kit from Road Rocket here in Melbourne for $85. (They had it stock at the time but the guy didn't know the price so I could'nt take them, strange to deal with sometimes.) You'll probably do a bit better importing them though.

I'm still using the stock pressure plate that I cleaned up with a bit of Autosol, but would probably look blinger with a nice anodised item.

Its a piece of piss to change them over, the trickiest bit I found was punching out the old bearing from the pressure plate. Because I used the original plate i put in on exactly the same position I took it off in. If your replacing that, I believe there are some arrows or something to line up, probably makes more sense if you have it in front of you.

But apart from that, yep thats all you need, order, fit and enjoy  [moto]

I have read the same thing before I changed mine over, however, when I put the bolts on mine, they spun easily and then noticably came to a firm stop. I just left left them at that point. Does that sound right?

I thought maybe the bolts in the kit come with the correct length shoulder (unthreaded bit) as opposed to ones you buy at a hardware store.

yep, that sounds about right, the coppaslip is there mainly to ensure water doesn't corrode the threads, as it's open and gets a lot of water and clutch dust etc it's just cheap insurance against them shearing going in or coming out.
as far as the pressure plate lining up goes, there is a slot on one of the clutch hub posts and on one of the 6 holes in the pressure plate there's either an arrow or a dot that lines up with the slotted post, easy as that.

It really is as easy as that, It was the first thing I changed on my bike so I too was a little apprehensive but it is simple. You could just paint your stock plate and caps. I wouls however recommend replacing the bolts and springs with Staino stuff.

thanks for all of the replies! 

I'm going for a very 'low-key' look - so I'll be sticking with the stock pressure plate. I've fired off a PM to Spider - all things going well, I'll be able to piggyback on his monsterparts order. 

I actually did a bit of shopping today - one outfit on ebay wanted $85 US for springs, about $70 for titanium bolts - $25 postage. Ek, no thanks!

As for the change over, it should be pretty simple: the pressure plate won't be coming off at all as I'll be doing one spring at a time.

Good little mod and my experience was exactly like Dos's (which is good - cause I told him that it would work like that!) they seem to just thread very easily in (I put telfon grease on mine) and then STOP...I was worried about the others warnings of snappage (French term meaning to f%ck it right up!) but it felt like the bolt just hit the bottom of a well and that was it.

i'll bet the std pressure plate lasts about a month!!! nice anodised ones look awesome and they don't have to be bright and gaudy, most look nice behind a cover
