I prefer bottles, I pour canned in a glass. If I buy canned, it's usually the dark Irish stuff like Guiness ~

I would'nt call what's in those cans beer.
i buy bottles 9.5 times out of 10.
when i buy cans it's because bottles arent' allowed where i am going or because i have weight/size restrictions so i need to get as much beer in as possible. also, cans are easier to sneak in than bottles. :)
Boobies!
I checked bottles, but I never miss a chance to say Boobies. [drink]

I haven't bought a can of beer since I discovered the link between shotgunning beers and waking up next to nastiness... :-*
Other than the shotgun function I see no reason to buy a can. with the exception of PBR the metal gives it all the flavor it has.

The cans are lined with plastic to give a nonmetallic taste, fyi.
Oskar Blues Brewery -- says aluminum gives beer longer shelf life, protects it from the destructive effects of light, and gets colder more quickly.
And since beer makers switched to a water-based plastic coating for cans from a solvent-based one in the 1980s, studies have shown that there have been no detectable differences between canned and bottled beer, Ray Klimovitz, technical director of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas told the Boston Globe.

Indeed! Thanks! I also built the wooden collar to give me an extra 3.5" of height and give me a place to drill for the taps.
Stubbies! :)
I prefer Guinness from the bottle. You are supposed to drink it straight from the bottle, for optimal widget function (it says so on the bottle). For some reason the canned stuff has a different flavour. Neither compares to a perfectly pulled Guinness draught, though.
Lol, has anyone else noticed that boobies is pretty much the tally counter for how many people looked at the vote? Nobody can resist voting for boobies even if they don't vote on the topic itself. [laugh]
I buy bottles most of the time, but only because the beer I tend to drink is sold in bottles. I only go the Keystone/ Beast direction where I'm looking for quantity over quality.
Almost always bottles.
The only exception is beer that comes in cans with widgets, like Guinness.

If you taste a difference, it may be from the top of the can.
Try pouring both into glasses, then see if you can tell. Great chance for a blind taste test (read, drink until you can't see).

Is pumkin ale equal to putting vegetable juice in your pilsner?
I always 99% + of the time drink micro-brews either in 22oz bottles or 1/2 gallon growlers. ( also glass, so that's just a really big bottle ;D )
Currently I'm on my second glass of " Winter Warlock" from Kenai River Brewery. I have no make the beast with two backsin idea what it is, it's got a decent amount of hops 50 - 70 IBU ( tastes like cascade with some other hops I haven't quite figured out yet ), copper colored, fairly malty, and defintely used Belgium yeast. I may report back as I sample more from this growler. [drink] ;D

Nothing really. But I prefer my Guiness poured properly out of a nitrogen pressured keg.
However, the closest thing you can get to that off the shelf is the cans. The cans are designed to be poured into a pint glass immediately after opening because the ball in them releases the gas (whatever it is) very quickly and continuously, which gives a nice frothy head when poured into a glass.
The bottles, however, are designed to be drank from the bottle and are NOT designed to be poured into a glass at all. The widget in the bottles only release their gas when inverted, which supposedly makes each drink you take from the bottle taste/feel like a nicely poured Guiness from the tap.

As someone mentioned, you can't shotgun a bottle (though that is not technically true).

There are actually a number of craft brewers that are canning their beers now because it's better for the beer. Beer+light=bad and cans let no light in.
That being said, whether it's a can or a bottle, you should always pour it in a glass if you can. If not, wipe the bottle off with a cloth where the cap was. There is going to be some spoiled beer right where the cap seals against the bottle due to the way they bottle beers to keep O2 out.

Cans actually should be lined, but the problem is that Americans have been conditioned to think only cheap crappy beers come in cans since most canned beer is cheap and crappy. It's not the can's fault the beer is crappy. Get busch or keystone in the bottle and it'll still suck balls.

i will not drive if i have had more than 1 beer. so its a nice alternative, if you can live with the taste
also, on the rare occasion that i am a designated driver, i prefer to nurse a couple of NA beers through the event rather than stand around with empty hands.
i won't sacrifice taste so i can drink something beerlike. i'll just drink soda.

From what I hear, it is significantly more expensive to can than to bottle. This is why most micro/craft brewers go with bottles. One of our local brewpubs is going to start canning. I think it's great because there are many parks, events and so forth that don't allow glass. There are many people knocking cans here but what about those plastic bottles some of the domestic beers come in. Beer in a plastic bottle is just ridiculous.

More than likely the biggest reason is snotty people like us (me included) will not buy beer in cans or wine with twist off tops even though canned beer can be as good or even better, as pointed out by Somebastid. I can only imagine bottles being cheaper for the smallest of micro brews because of equipment cost. Thin aluminum sheet is a lot cheaper than glass.
Printing a label is easier than printing a car, plus I'm sure the tooling is a lot more expensive for cans...
I'd imagine the sticking the label to the bottle might add some work. You're also less likely to break a can in the printer is slightly off. As far as I know, canning is cheaper, I think it's perception.
I would not pour a glass of dom perignon from a box for company.
Beamish in a can is excellent. Doesn't even taste like it's from a can ~

I'm pretty sure the labels go on already printed. It's just a crazy thought though

My point with that is while it may be easier to print the label than printing a can ("easier" is relative, as either form would be automated), one still needs to stick the happy, newly printed label to the bottle.

The three favorite things around here are Itailan motorcycles, barley pop, and bacon.
We have B.O.M.B. to honor Itailan motorcycles.
Bacon is Bacon [bow_down] [bacon]
How about a beer of the month? [drink]

Start a thread. but maybe make it a beer of the week thread. Suggest a beer, then people can try it and give their thoughts. Maybe the first person to give an opinion should select the next week beer.
Well, for October it should have been Saranac Pumpkin Ale...
I tried Sam Adams and Jack's Pumpkin Spiced Ale when I was over stateside in September... and some Pale Ale (not THAT kind). Good stuff, very good stuff indeed.
I walked into opening day of a very cool special at my local beer distributor this afternoon.
They had two pallets stacked 2-3 cases high with odds-n-ends. A random sixer of this, a few bottles of that.
It was 'mix your own case' for $12.
I now have 4 cases of local, seasonal beers.
