Years ago, I tore this page out of StreetFighters mag. I thought the bike was so gorgeous:
Just wondering if anyone else has great pics for inspiration?
Saw this one in a copy of some bike mag I was reading a few months ago. They had a pretty good sized section on streetfighters. He took a V-twin and built everything around it from the ground up. Even the swingarm and the polycarb he used for the taillight are custom. The paint isn't my thing, but that's negotiable I'm sure. I couldn't stop drooling for a couple of weeks. Anyone have $40k they really really want to lend?

Nice CB cafe. I'm currently (slowly) building a cafe CB 175 (1972) for my girlfriend. The motor is in great shape and it is a runner. So far all I have done is got her road worthy by rebuilding the carbs, replacing the entire ignition, replacing the tach cable, and general lube and maintenance. It has shorty pipes with a "cherry bomb" style silencer and boy are they loud. I just bought a set of new old aftermarket cafe style shocks made by the Redwing Company. First I've got to figure out a fueling issue on the right cylinder as it is running real lean. Next is a tear down for paint, getting the rust off all the chrome, buying some pods, getting some clip-ons, building a seat cowl, finding some disc brake front forks etc. etc.

Will be doing the same thing as you are doing and changing the seat as well. I've heard the drum front is fine if you adjust it properly.

The CB500 makes a great cafe racer. They make enough power to have fun with and their engine is not as wide as the CB750. I've seen a lot of CB750 cafe racers that look great, but there is always a certain angle that really shows how wide the 750 engine truly is. I like my cafe racers a little beat up with a few tank dings and scuffs all over the exhaust.

I'm sure it is fine for the weight of the bike and it is kinda hard to find a disk brake front for the 175's. They made a 125 sport that had a disk and I have heard that some of the forks from later model 350's with a disk front will fit. I have it adjusted right but it still leaves a lot to be desired in panic stop situations. I have never worked it very hard, so I have no idea if it will fade or not. I guess it is great to learn on, as it is almost impossible to loose traction on the front when braking hard [moto]

Ebay is where I have been finding a lot of stuff, including the shocks, which were still new in the box. I just passed up a 1969 high side 175 tank that was just a little too beat up. I found that most folks that convert the smaller Honda CL/CB's to cafe style put forks and shocks from larger bikes on them. A good source for ideas/tech tips is http://www.ohiocaferacers.com/ (http://www.ohiocaferacers.com/). The Redwing shocks I bought off Ebay were for a larger bike, but as long as they are pin/fork style and are 12.5" from center to center they will work. Progressive suspension supposedly makes a pin/fork style shock of the correct length, but I couldn't find a dealer that knew what I was talking about. You would also be surprised how many parts you can get from any Honda parts dealer. I got a speedo and tach cable, points, and condenser from a Honda dealer. Here is a handy part number reference http://www.powersportspro.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/7/Honda.aspx (http://www.powersportspro.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/7/Honda.aspx) The dealership didn't have the coil, which I thought was weird, but I bought a hi-po Accel unit and the bike loves it, although the fit was a bit tight. The bike is stored in NH and as luck would have it the neighbor two doors down restores CB's and works at the Honda dealership, so I get home delivery of parts [bacon]. For used stuff, you can't beat Cooper's http://www.mcsalvage.com/index.html (http://www.mcsalvage.com/index.html). I don't know if he delivers, but he has a huge barn full of Honda parts and knows everything about those bikes. In fact, the guy I bought the bike from had just installed a set of carbs from him and they were in great condition. I actually traded in the cables I bought from the dealer, which were black, for a gray ones which matched the other cables.

How do you like it with black rims? You mentioned the cost of the V7 classic being prohibitive, but I think it costs less than the Triumph Bonneville T100 which a lot of the magazines compare it too. It is more expensive than the basic Bonneville though.

Don't care.
I'd rock it with the drag bars that are on it.
Besides, spokes just weigh more and are harder to clean. :P

If you look up "beautiful motorcycle" in the dictionary, you should find pictures of that bike.
JM
What I can't afford? Egli-Vincent, hands down. With electric start, please. Or a Desmo Silver Shotgun. Even a 250 Desmo in classic Ducati yellow is a sweet little bike (disk brake, bumstop seat, clip ons, electronic ignition, it's almost a cafe racer right out the box).
What I can afford? CB400 four stripped bare with a solo seat, clip ons, and some upgraded brakes and suspension. If I was feeling a little crazy, a CBX with the same sort of mods, but you can't beat the feel of a rev-happy little 400 four - and it's nice and tiny too.
^^^^^^^^^^ That's a lot of motor sticking out of the frame in the CBX. The CB400 sounds like a blast!

Here's mine as I bought it 1981 cb750 custom. I'll post pics later of all i've done to it since.. little paint, hacked fenders, redid custom tail and learned how to use an english wheel at the same time, carb adjustments galore, dropped 3 times at 4 mph in the grass (don't ask why/how) and many plans ahead of me including: lowering the headlight and ditchin the guages, new rear shocks, finish the seat for the cowl I built, new tail light, black heads and anodize to a gold/bronze the sidecovers, new cam chain, and on and on.... Wish I could afford the CR carbs for it so the pods would work better...

The only thing about the 860 GT is those damn ugly square cases, the same with the Moto Guzzi, I guess thats why they are cheaper.

Intended as a clubmans racer, the BSA Gold Star was the first road production motorcycle to come equipped with clip ons and rearsets, in fact the terminology comes from this era, born out of the availability of credit in the late 50's, people didn't really start to 'modify' until the early 60's when 'accessories' became widly available. 'Cafe Racer' is a recent term.

it is definitely a custom job, the head looks like a V700 later model head but the right one has something on it which looks added -- oil line?

I have answered my own question. This is Ewan McGregor's bike. It's called 'Zagato Guzzi' and was built by Ben Part. Found lots of info about it on PelicanParts;

That is Ben's bike , Ewan's is the newer looking bike called OB1

aha!
QuoteThe oil filler- as you will appreciate, is to combat very user-unfriendly original hiding place, is made using a Kawasaki oil filler cap that uses its original thread in a new threaded tube welded into the rocker cover . I first tried a non-screwing Harley (rubber bung) oil tank chrome cap , but it kept coming loose. Then I looked into making up one from scrtach, but this much more simple & has a fin (so you can un-do it by hand) that matches those of the cover. The German Guzzi parts SteinDinse do one too.

If the article on Pelican Parts is correct, it sounds like 'zagato guzzi' (the bike from the ad) is OB1 and this pic is of Ewan is on OB2. However, I don't know myself as I have never seen either of these before this morning! :)
Awesome bikes though!!

It's a mildly modified stock 860 frame from the day, so it's just as rigid as any other bevel twin from the era. I guess it depends on what you consider to be "real use".
Here's a shot of a stock frame from a '74 750.

I hammered out the rear section by hand and the front cover where the guages used to be. red paint on the tank and rims as well as flat black on the tail, tank, and fender.
I like it much better now but still need to do something with the side covers. I'm thinking of getting some of the small ammo cases and modifying them to fit in the side covers so i can have some tool and other storage.... we'll see.
I still have to get the seat finished all the way to the rear up the curve.

Hey powerhammer, how does it handle?
I have a chance to pick up a 650 for really cheap, witha cafe project in mind, I just want to know if it will be worth my time and money.
That's aweseome! It's a shame I let my CB550 go. Maybe I really should jump on the KZ750 I've found locally...

A rubber coated steel weight on the right handle bar ? Perhaps it's just one of those warm up weights for Golfers . The weight has a cutout large enough to slip on a golf club shaft and then slides down to the head of the club and the Golfer swings the club several times to loosen up before actually starting to play .
Usually placed on a Golfer's Driver . Maybe it was just placed there for no intended reason other than a place to put it temporarily. Dolph

Travman, I grew up in the '60s and a lot of these bikes really take me back to some great old memories.
You know, the " good old days " thing.
I can't help so many nice bikes , one right after another . Gets the adrenaline flowing . Especially since I haven't got to ride since around mid November.
I guess the sad thing about the Mike Hailwood bike (MH900e) was it was a beautiful bike plagued w, lots of running issues. Dolph :)
Oh lord...
My 1972 R5 ran today.
(Backstory: I bought a `72 R5 off of craigslist. On my 3rd ride on it the #1 crank rod bearing froze while doing about 65mph on a nice long sweeper. Sweet, right? Locked the wheel up and held my ass tight, and saved it, well the engine was a diferent story. The piston broke in half at the pin. Lots of bad things inside the engine...)
So after collecting parts, rebuilding the bottom end, getting the top end bored out, new pistons, etc. etc.,
it is done. It kicked over on the first try today.
[evil]
Now the real fun can begin on this thing...
