[moto] Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: Scottish on May 26, 2008, 07:23:17 AM Ethans post in the spotted thread got me to thinking about something I saw the weekend. Figured I'd bring it here since it was kinda off topic there.
I went to my cousin Ambers HS graduation. When we were walking up the house I noticed a rough looking Yami YZF 600. I didn't think much of it until my wife said it belonged to Ambers boyfriend. In the house during the party I spotted no geear anywhere, and by dress alone couldn't figure out who he was(everyone was in t-shirts and shorts). Finally I saw them talking and made my introduction thinking that as fellow moto riders we'll have something to talk about. First thing he starts talking about is "standing it up" and how a bunch of his friends can "stand it up" for miles on end. I said that, that isn't really my style of riding, to expensive to fix bikes and I don't enjoy going down. We talked riding styles for a minute but it clearly wasn't going anywhere so we switched to the mechanical aspects. Anyway the whole point of all this is that as I'm leaving I walk past his bike and there isn't a complete piece of plastic left on the thing, it's fractured and broken nine ways to Sunday, annnndddd oh shit! The passenger pegs are down! There isn't a helmet or jacket to be found in that house, this bike is clearly stunted and it looks like my cousin rides cupcake behind this yahoo. I find that a bit frightening, me and my cousin aren't particularly close but I am concerned. Is it my place to say anything or should I just hope that everything turns out ok, I don't want to seem like a nosy, busy body. :-\ What would you do? Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: flynbulldog on May 26, 2008, 09:20:15 PM Take your cousin for a ride. Provide her with gear and show her a good ride with respect for her.
Then talk to her afterward, let her know that what she may be doing could be big problems if she continues. If you do nothing and she gets hurt (or worse) you're gonna feel bad. If you try to enlighten her maybe she'll listen but if she doesn't listen at least you didn't just let it happen. Good luck [moto] Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: DucMouse the Mighty on May 31, 2008, 06:33:45 PM whats spankin up north gents [beer]

This guy pulls up behind me to fill up his van and I think....he looks vaguely familiar. So I walk back and the name "Jason Britton" is plastered all over the side of the van. I chatted with him for a few minutes, turns out he was on his way to Kennewick, WA for a show, which is where I had just left from that morning.
He told me that "Sean Mitchell is his nemisis!" Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: Smitch on June 21, 2008, 07:37:14 AM I feel for you Slyter. I hope you took a bath to wash off all that odor of icky "stuntah" !

Not only did I share a room with her last year, I was the lucky one to share her bed as well. The first night she never made it in before I was getting up, I believe, and the next night, after christening the doorsill of an Irish bar, she was dumped unceremoniously into bed unconscious long before I came in. So whoever has the honor of sharing her bed, don't expect much under-the-sheet action. ;D [drink] Your paths may never cross. What happens in Ouray, doesn't stay in Ouray. Hey bonfy, Ewan McGregor and Charlie Daniels just called. They want you to stop making them look bad. I say keep it up! Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: bonfy on July 05, 2008, 10:34:38 AM [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]
Believe me, I thought of Ewan and Charlie more than once while on those roads. I watched "Long Way Round" a couple months ago and the image of them floundering and flailing their way across stretches of Russia linger fresh in my mind. The Monster didn't seem to mind the covering of muck. It bothered me more than it bothered him. I have noticed that is a shared trait among Ducatista. I am considering a dual-sport bike, but am leaning toward a V-strom. I've watched Count Desmo and Dustykitska both in action on their V-stroms and that seems like it would work for me plus it is more in my price range. I don't have a sponsor like the guys did...but if the shop would be interested in putting me on a BMW and letting me do more boneheaded stunts for the publicity...kind of a motorcycle version of "Jackass"...that would be awesome! I was wishing to move to Denver, but people have been saying some great things about the springs area. I don't know much about it. Also, anyone attending DITR from there? Riding out? You bet. Tons of good riding right in the backyard. Deckers, Bishops Canyon, HWY 50, Ute Pass, I could go on. You'll see. It's unbelievable. And as to DiTR, there will definitely be some of us riding over there from here. I did it from the Springs last year, the previous two years, I did it from Albuquerque. From the Springs, it is 7 or 8 hours, give or take a couple, depending on your route and speed. I actually went down through Pagosa Springs last year to meet up with the NMMR gang and go over Red Mountain with them. Came back though on HWY 50 and it is a much shorter route. You will love it. Well, call me insane then cuz I was out there in it, too, today. The alley was melted enough to get the bike down to the street. What a nice day for it. The roads weren't bad where I went. Anyone going up to Denver for the get-together at Erico's for the Daytona 200? so, im asking, are their emissions tests in CO? I have termis w/ db killers removed, and just removed the emissions canister, is this going to get me pulled over a lot in CO? MI cops don't care, and their isn't any emissions BS [moto] Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: DarkDuc696 on March 20, 2010, 04:21:08 AM The Springs and alot of places no longer have emissions tests in Colorado. I believe Denver may still have them, but being a transplant myself, Ive never had to test my vehicles.
Also most new cars are coming with Colorado emissions exempt stickers, so I assume some places still require them. Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: J_Slyter on March 20, 2010, 06:45:47 AM Yup, they got rid of the vehicle emission testing a couple of years ago, and even then bikes were not required to be tested.
They do have a noise ordinance that is supposedly pretty strict. Our cook at the Benihana type restaurant we go to rides a Gixxer and Harley. Last time we were there a few weeks ago, he told us he just got nailed on a noise violation on his Harley. First time I've ever heard of anyone actually pulled over for that. I have the Ducati Performance setup and I'm pretty sure I don't meet the requirements, but I have never been pulled over. I think most the LEO's have better things to do than randomly pull folks over for noise violations. Whats the job market like there? I hear the local economy isn't so great, is that true? I have a BS in industrial design, but CAD work or project management might also be good fits. I also have a background in furniture making. I'd hate to commute to Denver everyday, but sounds like that may be the place to look for work. If she gets it, we are coming out for a long weekend in April to look for apartments. I've been reading some blogs and they say west and northwest sides of town are the places to be. North and northeast seem to be heavily suburbed... [moto] Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: DarkDuc696 on March 26, 2010, 09:52:22 AM Where about's in town will she be working (assuming she's got the job)? That may help your decision of where to search for a place to live. I live on the north east side and while it is a lot of suburbia, there are really only 3 main roads that run north/south in the city, and all are pretty quick to navigate to. The west side of town are older homes and also some of the extremely priced homes.
If you're going to set up your base with riding in mind, Old Colorado City/Manitou Springs would be a place to look. It puts you right at the entrance to the mountains, and easy access to downtown. As to job opportunities, there are 4 military bases around the city and tons of contractors. If you have had any experience with the military/contractors before, it shouldn't be too hard to find something. Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: DucatiTorrey on March 26, 2010, 11:30:19 AM unfortunately no mil experience, finding work may be tough for me. We were looking at apartments and houses for rent on the west side and NW side. Old Colorado city is def an area of interest.
is the nightlife all downtown? Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: ducducgooseme on March 26, 2010, 01:08:47 PM nightlife and colorado springs don't go hand in hand. Its a pretty small and conservative town.
Old Colorado City is a neat place as well as Manitou Springs. good luck!! Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: DucatiTorrey on March 26, 2010, 01:28:26 PM hmmm, not even bars? im not looking for a dance party, just a good micro brew and a bluegrass band i guess.

Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: DarkDuc696 on March 26, 2010, 03:23:29 PM There are several micro brews in town. Several near the downtown area. Bristol Brewery has large take home jugs! [drink] [beer] DDGM is right though, its not a large 'clubbin' town like say San Antonio... Pubs and micro brews are more the theme. Besides with all the military around, the clubs they do have are massively overloaded with testosterone and several fights tend to break out each weekend.

[evil]Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: bonfy on March 26, 2010, 07:58:16 PM I tore up Colorado Springs between 1981 and 1997 and never ever ran out of fun places to go. But I was easily pleased so dives and honkytonks were as much fun as three-tier nightclubs. As long as it had a pool table and a jukebox, I was good to go. Now that I am back, I don't go out all that much, but there are enough nightclubs to get you into trouble, and most of my old dives are still afloat. When you guys get here, I will give you my recommendations and you can compare them to DucDucGooseMe's. KRJ probably has a few spots to throw in down in Canon City. Anyone else? I have heard about Syn having lots of fights, but didn't realize the other downtown clubs were so boisterous, as well.

However, Dusty has moved up here from the NMMR and she and I plan to revive the Ducnights. We were part of the core group down in Albuquerque so we have the ingrained habit of Tuesday nights being somewhere on our Ducs, making an appearance. Also, it is fun to get together for WSBk and Moto GP races. Rides are scheduled but also impromptu. I hope everyone will post up invites when they get a wild hair. Someone will be glad to join you. Except for the section just north of Walsenburg where the wind decided to relieve me of my tank bag (at which point I thanked my lucky stars the tequila was in my backpack). Otherwise, it felt wonderful to get in that first long ride of the season (we all know the first is the toughest on the touchie).

Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: bonfy on April 16, 2010, 03:39:45 PM Well, I think that if you want to take in some of the magnificent scenerey, you should take a drive through the Garden of the Gods. Then head up Ute Pass to Woodland Park so you can scout the canyon you will soon be carving on a regular basis. From there, you can either take a left to Cripple Creek, or a right to Deckers and Pine Junction. More of our favorite routes for riding. Down to Canon City on Hwy 115 (stop and say hi to KRJ) and then out Hwy 50 to Salida. Of course, if you are going to live here, you might as well save some of these for the bike. You will like Phantom Canyon. I've never heard any complaints. Closer to home there is Cheyenne Canyon. You should throw in a quick hike up Pikes Peak, too, if you have time. ;D
Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: DarkDuc696 on April 17, 2010, 04:56:14 AM I think bonfy is a little excited. LOL. Food wise there is the Melting Pot (http://www.meltingpot.com/) (fondue) restaurant downtown, or if you like German Edelweiss (http://www.edelweissrest.com/)(Bristol Brewing company is literally next door [drink]) There are several great Mexican food places, and of course all the normal mainstream food eateries.
Several breweries, Bristol Brewing (http://www.bristolbrewing.com/), Phantom Canyon (http://www.phantomcanyon.com/), Rock Bottom (http://rockbottombrewery.com/) are around town. Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: DucatiTorrey on April 18, 2010, 02:03:26 PM great thanks for the replies guys! good to see more than one brewery in town too! Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: DarkDuc696 on April 18, 2010, 03:06:56 PM I myself am not familiar with Bells. There are actually more breweries in town. If you do a google for colorado breweries you will find there are probably about 30 in the Colorado Springs/Denver area. I'm sure there are more than enough to keep your hunger for inebriation in check for a good while. LOL

By the time they got rid of the annoying commercials I'd conditioned myself to not even see their stores. To date I've been dragged into Old Navy twice by family. Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: mytduk on April 28, 2010, 04:14:36 AM Hey Ducati Torrey,
I don't know if you are wanting to package up all your stuff with one insurance company but I found Progressive very reasonable. There is a lady named Chrystal Polanski at Rocky Mountain Cycle that sells insurance. Very attractive lady too! I think I pay less than 200 per year for both my 91 Ducati 907 and my 1975 Honda 750F. Of course I am over 50 and they are old bikes. And Bick don't be fussing about Flo, I happen think she is hot too. As for you SCOTTISH, move aside mate, age before beauty! One place quoted me $15 a month for my 696???? i pay 80 now, whats up with that, im almost apprehensive to go for it. With that quote, i got two cars, renters and a bike for 123 a month. are they insane?
Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: Scottish on April 28, 2010, 12:08:04 PM With Progressive I think I come out at $239 a year for the 695 liability, and unisnsured only. That's under $20 a month

Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: Scottish on April 30, 2010, 09:42:35 AM Yeah, the part where it says seasonally closed means from winter till sometime in the spring it won't be open. In CO it's often better to stick to the main highways and routes unless you know where you're going. It's not uncommon for people to get stranded and need rescued up there. The moountains can be trechreous and aren't really a place to be taking risks in the winter monthes unless you are very familar and capable.
Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: mytduk on April 30, 2010, 11:04:54 AM DucatiTorrey,
If you are thinking about taking the road to Buena Vista then over Indepencence Pass forget about it. Yeah it looks straighter. Only thing is you go over Independence Pass and it is 12,000 feet not to mention there is probably six to eight feet of snow blocking the road. Does not normally open until Memorial Day weekend. I have been there on that weekend. What a hoot going over the pass with four feet of snow on the sides. Great ride on the motorcycle when it opens up. Great ride in the fall too. My wife and I drove up to cripple creek the other day for fun, and holy crap I'm so taking the bike up there! Too bad its going to erico for some work late next week. but, should get some street time starting this weekend!

bicycle version http://tinyurl.com/267u69k (http://tinyurl.com/267u69k) anyways, anyone familiar with this road? looks super twisty and fun but no idea if it is dirt car version http://tinyurl.com/2emmh6t (http://tinyurl.com/2emmh6t) Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: J_Slyter on May 14, 2010, 08:00:20 AM Wow, that brings back memories. That route uses Gold Camp road. I took a VF750 Honda Sabre that way about 20+ years ago, it was dirt then and I don't think anything has changed. I seem to recall them closing part of it because of an extremely wet summer a few years back, but I think they fixed all the washouts. Beautiful route and a car/truck should be no problem, but then again I haven't taken it in a long time. Kids like to go up there (at night) in the summer. Every now and then you hear of someone putting a tire off the edge of the road and rolling down the mountainside, so be careful if you head up there.
Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: DarkDuc696 on May 17, 2010, 01:28:50 PM That road is definitely still dirt. I dont believe that way is open to cars anymore, but you can take a bicycle or even dirt bike that way.

Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: mytduk on May 19, 2010, 04:17:19 AM Just a word of caution for DucatiTorrey, the road to Deckers is great and riding to Pine Junction is great also. But the road to Deckers can and usually does have some sand on it especially once you get past the forest fire burn area. I think it is called Westcreek. The road from Deckers to Pine Junction always has sand on it summer or otherwise.. I spun my Subaru out on corner going to Pine Junction once and it was becasue sand was all over the road. I think it was near Buffalo. It was not winter either.

Riding to Denver tonight, visiting fam for the rest of the week, and dropping the monster off at Erico. Who knows when Ill get it back, Not sure ill have a ride back up there till maybe end of next week. [roll]
Title: Re: ~~~~Official SoCO Dogs Say Anything Thread~~~~ Post by: mytduk on May 19, 2010, 11:50:08 AM The area right out of Deckers for a few miles is really bad becasue it is very narrow and car/trucks pulling trailers drag the sand up on the road. It is also bad in the summer when it rains becasue the rain washed the sand across the road. It is just bad. But that is probably good advice on any road in Colorado after it rains and for a few days after.

I am not sure that everyone on a bike is allowed past the entrance gate, but you can try, by saying you are with the Ducati group.
