So I'm either going to upgrade my phone with Verizon and get a Storm or switch carriers and get an iPhone. I am having a really hard time trying to make up my mind which way to go.
For those of you who have either can you please weigh in on your likes/dislikes on each phone?
Thanks
If you need a phone for business purposes with many user defined settings, then get a blackberry. I'm not sure about the Storm though. I have a Curve and I love it.
If you're looking for a phone designed more for sheep that is easier to use out of the box, then get an iPhone. Just my opinion, but I think the Blackberry is better and on a better network.
I just switched from At&T to Verizon and hate life.
+1 on the crackberry

I'll play along to...
If you're a corporate pawn who can't handle your business without the assistance of corporate IT and still think a "smartphone" is anything that takes calls and does email then buy the BB.
If you are tired of carrying 2 or 3 devices on trips (phone, mp3, videogame, dvd player, etc) and would like it all in one device get an iphone. if you'd like the ability to use any number of over 10000 mobile applications to get shit done or just have fun while you're out and about then get an iphone. For a Enterprise sales guy who travels a lot like me these apps include - Saleforce mobile, Bank of America mobile, Amazon mobile, ebay mobile, paypal mobile, hotels.com app, blackbook guides, expense2go, urbanspoon, weatherbug, nytimes, costtools, etc.
Seriously though. I used a BB for the past 5 years and it worked well for me (phone and email). I did have to carry an ipod and laptop with me. I like carrying only one device (and one powercord, etc) when I travel and the apps mentioned have made finding a good room, good restaurant or bar and getting flight information damn easy. I have found I can get 90% of it done now with just an iphone even doing powerpoint slide shows from it when needed. From a phone standpoint I don't think I could go back to not having visual voicemail. It sounds like a small thing but not having to wade through a bunch of vms to get to the 1 I need quickly is now a killer ap for me.
Cheers.

Good positives for the iPhone. There are a lot of cool apps for the iPhone, thats for sure and the mp3 player feature is better, though the Blackberry's isn't bad and it may be even better on the Storm. But the apps are a definite selling point for the iPhone.
And Safari is far better than the stock Blackberry browser, though Opera Mini is very good and it is free for the crackberry. I recently went on a trip and I didn't take a laptop or an mp3 player. The Curve is good enough. [thumbsup]
We just switched corporate service from Verizon to AT&T.
I wouldn't bother based upon the fact that AT&T service blows.
I use Sprint for my personal phone and NEVER has service issues.
AT&T.........that's a different story. They blow.
I'd stick with Verizon.

ATT...if osama bin laden took out half of AT&Ts network. i wouldnt of notice. Yea its THAT shitty.
quality of service would obviously vary based on location..
i have a blackberry on at&t in los angeles, and haven't had any issues since switching 3 years ago.

I was on my Blackberry through AT&T in Las Vegas and dropped AT LEAST a dozen calls.
Can't tell me that is an obscure location to require decent service.
I was in Jackson, WY back in 2003 and my Sprint PCS phone never dropped a call, had poor service, etc.
bottom line, the AT&T network is shit.
Tom -
I went through the exact same dilemma last month, and in fact, had been waiting the 3 months that VZW was teasing the market with all the Storm hype, in order to check it out vs. the iPhone.
The storm isn't worth the hype at all. Not yet, anyways.
Its software is extremely laggy and buggy (If you've used it) and the Surepress tactile feedback is really lacking. One thing to note w/ the Storm is that all the "little touches" that kick ass on the iPhone - like a snappy refresh and a smooth transition between portrait to landscape when you tilt the device - are completely absent on the BB Storm. It deperately needs an OTA Firmware update to even be a contender. RIM released it early for the holiday market and it completely shows. It has a lot of promise, but unfortunately Apple was there first with so many innovations that RIM has to dance around their patents and can't put the same UI stuff in.
If you're looking for a big, bright, touchscreen with great browsing capabilities and multimedia, you really can't go wrong with the iPhone. I know there's some " limitations " with it like Picture ID, recording videos, easy cut & paste, etc. But for a consumer device, if you don't need push e-mail from an exchange server (ie: corporate e-mail) there's no reason to get the storm, at all, over the iPhone. You can get all sorts of nifty applications for the iPhone, games, utilities, etc. Even a dyno!
One tip w/ the iPhone when you demo one is this: don't actually try and press every single letter, just try and get in the general area of each letter. Once you hit spacebar, it will 99% of the time infer the right word and change it auto-magically.
As for my Storm vs. iPhone debate, I ended up getting a BB Curve instead. Why? VZW gave me two months free to renew my contract ($200 credit) and sold me the Curve for $50... So basically, I got $150 bucks and a free curve. Even if I hate it, and cancel my contract, I can flip it on eBay and come out way ahead. The thing is, what was most important to me was things like a replaceable battery, replaceable memory (MicroSD) and most importantly a Tactile QWERTY keyboard. That last part wasn't available in any other device, and I don't care for the Pearl's SureType or whatever it's called. I want QWERTY! :) I am always near a multimedia device (iPod in the car, computer at home/work, etc.) so my BB is more for Google Apps, e-mail, facebook, etc. More of an information device than a multimedia one.
Good luck [thumbsup]
Adam
Hmmm.... you guys are no help at all! [laugh]
I thought the consensus might be split.
You guys brought up one thing I have been really concerned about, the network. If it was only about the network it would be the Storm without question. That is not my only concern though.
What I really want/need it for is it's multi use capabilities. I'm sick of carrying a bunch of different devices around with me.
From my research, here are the conclusions I have made.
The iPhone is way easier to use for everyday activities such as making calls and the controls are very intuitive unlike the the Strom which is like being blind and trying to drive a car. You'll eventually get where your going but you will bounce off a bunch of things you don't intend to and make quite a few wrong turns while getting there.
The network is definately better with Verizon however AT&T does have pretty good coverage where I live. I have also heard that "unlocking" the iPhone will allow it to use other towers and give you more coverage area. I don't know how true this is but I've read it online a few times. Can anyone explain what unlocking and/or jailbreaking an iPhone really does?
They both basically have the same memory capabilities (8GB) so there is no difference there. The iPhone has built in WiFi and the Storm doesn't.
One of the biggest problems I have with the iPhone is the iTunes software. It's dreadful IMO and I hate using it. I had an iPod last year and I hated it so much I ended up selling it. The iPod itself was easy to use, I just hated downloading music onto it.
So anyone else have any input?

what's so bad about itunes? ya put the music into itunes. itunes puts the music onto the ipod.
get a big enough ipod and you don't even have to worry about being selective about the music you sync.
(uncheck "keep itunes music folder organized" and "copy files...")

You only use the iTunes s/w when you're loading music, contacts or apps onto the phone. How often is that going to be?
When did you use iTunes? I find it to be really intuitive ... Drag and drop, and presto!

Here's another curve for you. Go to http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=att+wireless&form=QBF8&qs=n (http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=att+wireless&form=QBF8&qs=n)
or live.com and type in "att wireless" and the 1st listing that comes up is 25% off Iphone AT&T online. :o A friend just bought one this way and saved $100 on Iphones for him and his wife. He received the phone in 2 days and activated it at home. I been thinking about this switch (from vrz) myself but the network issue might be a problem for me on the Big Island.

My dad was looking at a Storm and all the reviews I read for it. . .
well they all hated it.
I love my iPhone.
I had a HTC touch before this on verizon's network and Windows Moble 6 is just plain stupid in comparison to the iPhone. Apple flat out obliterates WM as far as im concerned.
I had email trouble, and logged more than 40 hours total trying to solve it (that's time at the Verizon store waiting for the tech monkeys to finish flinging their poo at the phone, time on the phone with tech monkeys listening to them tell me how to fling poo, and time on my own trying to figure out how not to get hit with poo)

I like my iPhone from this point of view, but keep in mind it's camera is only OK, as an iPod it's kinda small, as a GPS it's limited - it needs a network connection to get googlemaps and it doesnt do the "talk you to your destination turn by turn" that any cheapo Chinese GPS does these days (apparently due to licencing issues with google maps). But it does most of that stuff pretty well most of the time. I still carry a camera to gigs, 'cause the iPhone camera really doesn't deal with low light. I still take my iPod on trips 'cause I can't carry 60 gigs of tunes in the phone. But day to day, I pretty much just carry the iPhone now.
QuoteOne of the biggest problems I have with the iPhone is the iTunes software. It's dreadful IMO and I hate using it.
That could well be a deal breaker for you then - the iPhone is _tremendously_ strongly tied to iTunes.
The other two _real_ resons not to get an iPhone from my (and my friend) experience are:
1) if you use an Exchange mailserver with anything other than just a plain inbox - the serverside mailbox filtering ends up not working at all well on the iPhone (I'm told that by default Windows Mobile sucks pretty badly for this too, but there are heaps of easily installed addons to make it work "properly" in WinME, but none yet for iPhone)
2) if you seriously use your phone for editing documents on the move. A lawyer friend of mine says she couldn't get an iPhone 'cause she needs to be able to edit word docs on her phone and send the edited versions back to the office. (I can't imagine doing that, it kinda explains why legal documents end up being so hard to read - they were all edited on a 2 by 2 1/2" screen while in the queue at Starbucks by someone not paying much attention...)
That said, my iPhone is by far the best gadget I've ever bought - I don't really think of it as a phone, it's really "the internet in my pocket", which also happens to take phone calls...

Interesting this is.
I've just spent about an hour or so reading reviews and watching them on you tube. It seems that most people agree that Verizon rushed to get the Storm out on time and there were problems. From what I have been reading these was a software update that fixes all the issues. Also I was at Verizon today and the store manager mentioned something about new software for one of the demo phones they have on display. One worked considerably better than the other and he said that one has had the upgrade and the other hasn't. The one that had it was much much better.
I'm starting to rethink my decision to get the iPhone now. I'm still very disappointed that I can't use my music for ringtones and my photos for caller ID pics.
Am I wrong, is there a way to do that with the iPhone?

ringtone: itunes > music > select track > make ringtone
All the Iphone Storm comparison reviews I have read so far indicate the Iphone is the much better phone at this point.
I would wait for a few firmware upgrades on the Storm first.
I played with a Storm in the store and it was snail slow. The touch screen is very gimicky. Its one huge button and you need to wait for the operating system to catch up to highlighting the cursor before you can press the button.
Any cellular network can be spotty in places. Especially given that most of them were cobbled together from local and regional carriers that were purchased by Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T then linked up to the national network. What you have to do is evaluate where you're going to be using the phone most and plan for that. Pick up a throw away, pay-as-you go from each carrier and see which network works best in your area.
I just got the iPhone and I like it. It's not perfect, but it's a pretty damn cool toy. Having a full browser to surf the Internet is great. Being able to use Wi-Fi hotspots is great (which BTW, AT&T has a ton of at places like Starbucks). It only takes about 2 minutes to acclimate to the touch-screen keypad and all the other functions are very intuitive. The Google maps with GPS and streetview is killer, and there are a ton of cool apps that are available. As a phone, the iPhone works pretty well, though I admit I don't use it a lot.
The only real iPhone drawbacks:
Battery life can be a bit short if using 3G, searching for Wi-Fi and getting push E-mail. Longest charge lasted 4 days. Shortest lasted 36 hours.
Still no Flash support, so if the webpage media isn't Youtube, it's not going to play.
The occasional app (including Safari sometimes) will just stop and crash.
Custom ringtones still a pain without resorting to 3rd party software.
Other than that, the iPhone works as it's supposed to and does it's job pretty well.
I got my Storm and am loving it.
Granted, I haven't played much with the IPhone, but of those 237845692384756 apps available for the IPhone are useless crap like the Zippo app or the Cowbell app (That's right Randy, I'm talkin' to you! ;) )?
My previous phone was a Motorola Q with Windows ME and it blew.
The vast majority of the free and pay to play BB apps work just fine on the Storm.
The Crackberry forums even have links to almost all of the BB apps out there.
As a media player, the Storm works great for video and MP3. The camera works pretty dang well.
The VZ Navigator software is great and also gives you voice prompting.
The updated OS for the Storm makes it nearly as fast as the IPhone but it is still slow comparitively.
Verizon compared to AT&Ts network is world's better and with the merger with Alltel will be virtually seamless throughout the nation.
(I tested both carriers and while a couple years have passed, I couldn't believe how light AT&Ts coverage was in areas where you would need a cell phone call the most inan emergency.)
I can definitely see why people get hooked on BBs. Setting everything up was a breeze and unfortunately for me, I was recieving my work emails less than 20 minutes after recieving the phone.
I am by no means an expert with the Storm as I am still fnding new things on it daily. But I am VERY happy both as a business and casual user of my Storm.
I love my 8310 Curve.
Can't imagine needing anything more in a mobile device.

RIM really has the "important" stuff down: email, calendar, and contacts.
the "user experience" for other stuff; web browsing (even with operamini), googlemaps, etc., is just ok... read: i can get by, but i prefer not doing it.
the iphone is a better "consumer" phone and the blackberry is a better business phone. apple is gaining ground on the business end... quickly.
it'd also like to add that i was a palm (3com pilot from the beginning, then treo) user and i hated giving up my "endless supply of apps" when going to a business-supplied blackberry. rim's push email/cal/contacts kicked palms ass, though.
iphone looks like it'll (eventually) be the best of both worlds.
I've got an iPhone on Tmobiles network. My friends owns a cell phone store, so I get to try out the newest coolest stuff. Did I say I have an iPhone? There no comparison. iPhones are open source, meaning anyone can create apps. The BB's are closed, try creating an app for the Storm and send it to BB and see what they say.
As far as networks, you can have the iPhone on any network other than Verizon and Sprint. But I do here Verizon might get the iphone soon too.

you don't need RIM to "approve" an app for a blackberry just as you truly don't need apple to approve iphone apps.

The video doesn't surprise me. the iphone on verizon has been a rumor for awhile. therefore apple probable already built in the hardware into all there new 3g phones. Another example, for some reason there is a gps chip in the ipod touch. Nobody really nows why, but maybe apple was planning something that didn't go through.
I'd recommend you hold off on a purchase to see if verizon announces it soon, or more hack info becomes available.

AT&T has an exclusive agreement for the iPhone until 2010. Considering how much revenue it's generating for AT&T, I doubt they're going to be breaking that anytime soon.

well, i used to carry a phone and a palm pilot. when the treo came out, i saw an opportunity to carry one less device.
i still think that cameras on phone are kinda silly. mainly because the pics always look like crap and i almost always have my canon sd700is with me.
my phone has to be a phone first and foremost, then a contact/calendar/email manager, and everything beyond that is "extra".
i do miss the wide choice of games on the palm platform and all the little productivity apps that were available (pocket quicken, for one).

if you dig deeper, here is the list:

Software/Version: Deterministic Network Enhancer (DNE) 2.21.7.233 through 3.21.7.17464,Access Gateway 4.5.7, Presentation Server 4.5
Vendor's Solution: Vendor Patch
Nature of Vulnerabilities: Privilege escalation in DNE via specially crafter device interface requests affects Cisco VPN Client, Blue Coat WinProxy, SafeNet SoftRemote and HighAssurance Remote. Search path vulnerability, authentication bypass
and buffer overflow lead to arbitrary code execution.
Oh I read deeper. My point being is that if they took the time to "develop" software with such vulnerabilities for a known platform with a long mutual working history, then what is to say they aren't rushing this to the market just so hey can make "millions" of apps available for the IPhone?
It's kind of like slippng on a condom after finishing up with sex to prevent disease or pregnancy.

I use my phone instead of carrying a laptop for most things. The inability to edit word docs and resend them would kill it for me. iphone won't do that?
Out of the box, no. You can read them, but not edit them. There _may_ be app store applications that let you edit them - but. Aybe not, the "rules" for app store developers might not allow them enough access to local storage.
What is it with you lawyer types wanting to edit stuff on your phones? (I know, a billable 15seconds is a billable hour, right? ;-) )
Big
Bingo.
I just know how unreliable our Citrix interface is with our route accounting software vendor. I would prefer to have everything on site and in hand so I can do my own troubleshooting and repair work instead of relying on a third party vendor trying to troubleshoot with a 4th party interface.
Back on topic though, both phones offer alot more than the old phones did. Either one is a very capable piece of equipment that provides functionality that rivals even the web books that are becoming so popular in a package that can fit in your pocket.
Both have advantages and both have drawbacks but both will do everything you need and much more.

AT&T has an exclusive agreement for the iPhone until 2010. Considering how much revenue it's generating for AT&T, I doubt they're going to be breaking that anytime soon.
Adam
Apple's going through a lawsuit about this exclusive agreement. AT&T has an exclusive lock on them for 5 years (IIRC), while saying they require a minimum of 2 years for service with any new iPhone. The point argued in the lawsuit is that in reality you're bound to AT&T for 5 years (for the early adopters anyway, and assuming Apple does not extend the agreement) since some features of the iPhone only work on AT&T.
How soon do you need the phone?
I'd say wait until MacWorld in the first part of January. While the rumors don't say much on any new phones being announced, Apple might release a big software update for the phone to coincide with the expo. Your purchasing decision may be clearer then.

Update!!! I bought the Storm!
But wait.... Not so fast..... Hold the phone (pun intended), there's more to the story!
After spending hours doing research on both phones last night I came to the conclusion that I wanted the iPhone but the Storm made more sense because after all I am already on the Verizon network.
So off to the Verizon store this afternoon to buy my new Blackberry Storm.
All went well and I left the store with my new phone in hand after about 20 minutes or so. As I was walking to my car I decided to change my ring tone so I tap the media button and expected it to open and allow me to change it to something a little louder than the default tone out of the box. It started to open the app but it just locked up and wouldn't do anything. So back to the store I go more than a little pissed off that the phone I owned for all of 12 seconds already has a problem. As I walked into the store I am spotted by the manager who helped my yesterday and answered all of my questions.
I explain to him I just picked up the phone and I am none too happy that there's already a problem. He asks me if my sales person set up my email etc. and I told him yes and he politely explained that it takes a few minutes for eveything to go through so thats the reason for my problem and once it's done everything will be fine. He then takes out the battery to reset the phone and checks to see that I have the latest software installed. It's all good so off I go again.
I change the ringtone without any issues so I'm happy now but there's almost no charge to the battery so I head back to work and plug it in. The phone is on the counter and one of my co-workers sees it and goes crazy. He's telling me how great the thing is and how he can't wait to upgrade his phone so he can get one. He seems to know alot about it so we spend some time discussing the features. One of the things that I thought was pretty cool was the VZ Navigator. VZN does a few cool things like GPS navigation and finding all sorts of stuff like restaurants, car rentals, banks, and shopping. I decided to give it a shot just to see how good it is. I also have a Tom Tom GPS and it doesn't have a lot of POI's in my area so I'm hoping that the Storm will provide me with a better selection.
Ummm...No. In fact, it doesn't even work because I haven't set it up yet. It takes a few minutes to set it up and I try again hoping it will work. It doesn't. I just keep getting an error message stating I don't have this option installed and to check with my service provider. Okey Dokey....
Pick up the phone, dial *611 for customer support and wait on hold for about 20 minutes. I explain I just bought the phone and I'm having a little problem getting the VZN to work and can they help me. It is at this point where things go from bad to worse.
First I'm told that t he VZN is NOT included with my data plan. Hmmmmm....really? Thats strange because the sales person I spoke with yesterday told me that with the data plan ($30 extra on top of my calling plan) I would be able to use all of the functions of the phone with the exception of texting which I'm ok with because I never text. I am assured that it does indeed cost extra but they will be more than happy to give me a free month to try it out. I decline.
At this point I'm considering going back to the store and asking the sales person why they told me everything was included when clearly it isn't. I also plan to ask what else did she forget to inform me of.
I'm a little steamed and the urge to vent gets the best of me so I get in the car and start heading back to the store. I need to return a few calls I missed while I was on hold with customer service so I try to make a call and the phone locks up again. WTF!!!!!!!!!! Out comes the battery to reset it again.
After turning it back on I make another attempt to place a call and a VM comes through. Here's where I lose my make the beast with two backsing mind......
I hit speed dial #1 to call my VM. At the prompt to enter my pin number I look down at the phone to see the keypad isn't visible so I hit the button to bring it up and enter my pin. I then attempt to press "1" to listen to my VM and guess what? The keypad again isn't visible so I have to again hit the button to bring it up. I press "1" and listen to my VM and I see I have to return a call to my buddy and then try to erase the VM by pressing "7" and guess what? Yup, you guessed it, the keypad isn't visible again. So again I have to hit the button to bring it up and then erase the VM.
YOU CANNOT BE make the beast with two backsING SERIOUS?? [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang]
Lets recap shall we?
In order to check my voice mail I have to:
Hit a button to bring up the keypad
Hit speed dial 1
Wait for the voice prompt
Bring up the keypad again
Enter my pin
Wait for the voice prompt to listen to my message
Bring up the keypad again
Enter option 1 to listen to my message
Wait for the voice prompt to erase the message
Bring up the keypad again
Hit 7 to erase or 9 to save.
After all that I still have to return the call to my friend so I end the call to the VM system and attempt to make the call. I'll bet you can't guess what happend next.....
The phone locked up again! [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang]
At this point I pretty much want to kill the make the beast with two backsing moron who invented the software for Blackberrys but I settle for going back to the store and voicing my opinion to the store manager. Of course he tries to get me to pick out another phone etc. but I'm pretty steamed so I'm having none of it. As much as I want to throw the phone at the salesperson I resist and just return the POS.
I pick up my iPhone tomorrow morning. [roll]
Hehe
When I played with the Storm in the store I had all sort of problems. Freezing... Turtle slowness, randomly going into the camera mode when in other applications as other people complained about online... etc
I think the Storm might be good in about 6 months of firmware updates but for now I think you are safer with a Iphone since its been around much longer =)
After reading your voice mail challenge, I think you'll be sold on the iPhone's Visual Voicemail. [thumbsup]
Dangit, in my day the phone was attached to the wall and if we wanted to check our mail at all our hours, we had to walk to the dang mailbox! Sheesh! Kids!
Well, you can say one good thing about the Storm...it helped you make up your mind quickly! [thumbsup] [cheeky]

Yeah but I just hope I don't hate the iPhone because as I'm transferring my number from Verizon I'm sure it's more of a PITA that just returning the thing to my local AT&T store. [roll]
I was at the Verizon store today playing with several phones. I think their plans are at the minimum unclear, and at the most, deceptive. You are right, VZN costs more. It is hard to actually figure out how much a plan will cost with the options you want, and if it includes VZN and Vcast and Vvideo.
I found the storm to be very hard to navigate webpages with compared to an iphone.

I guess I got lucky with my 26% discount on my plan because NOBODY can even come close to touching all of the features my plan offers for what I pay (under $100 for full voice(1400 mins) and data with unlimited text/pics with VCast and VZ Navigator on 3 phones on my package).
The stock browser on the Storm does blow. But the Opera Mini makes it just as easy to navigate as the IPhone.
Sorry to hear about the OPs issues. Willing to bet that the phone they gave you didn'thave the updated OS on it as those were the issues that the first release had.
Good luck with the IPhone. It is a great product with a Zippo app!!!
So I picked up my iPhone today and so far it's head and shoulders better than the Storm.
I do have a question for all you iPhone users.
Can you apply songs from your library to use as rigntones? I've been trying but I can't seem to figure it out.

I don't have one. If you've ever used an iPhone you would understand. The ones that come with the phone are terrible.
I would even be happy with a ringtone that sounded like a modern phone ringing. I don't even want my phone to play songs when it rings but by the looks of it, it's my only choice.
The only ringtone on a cell phone should be vibrate.

RIM really has the "important" stuff down: email, calendar, and contacts.......
.....it'd also like to add that i was a palm (3com pilot from the beginning, then treo) user and i hated giving up my "endless supply of apps" when going to a business-supplied blackberry. rim's push email/cal/contacts kicked palms ass, though.
iphone looks like it'll (eventually) be the best of both worlds.
Yea me too. Started on a Palm personal/handspring/Treo. Im on Verizon and I don't want to give up any of my calender, contacts, notes Etc. Plus I like the Bluetooth sync with the laptop. I use the desktop software quite a bit.
Is there a desktop suite for these phones like Palm has?

on mac it syncs to ical/contacts/etc.
i seem to remember reading that it also does this for windows (outlook) out of the box using itunes as a conduit.
Boy after reading these last two pages, I just gonna stick with the Treo for a while. I don't have any of these hassles. & the desktop software works like it should with the phone.
It might be a little less bling, but it does everything I want it to. I like having the camera too. It works in a pinch.
