So I'm getting pretty bored with my current car (1995 Volvo 850r Wagon) and am looking for something a little... different.
I'm commuting 35 miles each way to work now, and the Volvo sucks gas (literally), it has 116000 on the clock and is starting to fall apart so i figure it's time to upgrade.
i want something fun, and a warranty would be great! i figure I'm thinking in the $15,000 range
i really haven't found many cars that would be appealing that have been made in the past few years - help me DMF, you're my only hope.
I'm in the same boat as you right now. About the same budget as well. I've pretty much made up my mind on an 2005 or 2006 Subaru legacy GT. You get all wheel drive, almost 250hp turbo 4 cylinder, plus leather and other modern amenities. I'm seeing them sell anywhere from 10k to 20k. I think its a good balance of luxury, without buying a bmw or equivalent, and performance without having a two wing on the back.
yeah, a buddy of mine just got a 2006 Saab 9-3 and it's actually a fun little car.. but it's still a Saab.
i was thinking a WRX or something of the sort as well.
Uh-why not the moto? You live in SLO dude-it's beautiful every day.

I'll be the first to say I don't think any Subaru is the best lookin car around, but for our budget and what you get for it, I'd be more than happy to cruise one.

you can deal witht he cold easy enough with the right gear. and you dont' have to spend lots of money on it.
then again, compared to a car, buying the best stuff would still be cheap.
now excuse me, i have to go make sure it's not to cold where i'm going to sleep.
Subaru wrx was my first thought too. How much room do you need? Mini?
mitt
My buddy just got a 2004 Infiniti G35x with all wheel drive and a VERY powerful V6 with about 50K on it for $14,000. After seeing and riding in his I will be looking to get one of these in September when I will be in the market. It is a beautiful car with an awesome interior (the back seats recline!), bose sound system, and all the extras you could want. These are basically the same cars as the Skylines in Japan and are freaking fast ( I've been in a lot of fast Audis and this was comparable to a 2.7t S4 if not stronger). The all wheel drive is awesome. It is rear wheel until the computer detects slippage and then goes to all wheel in milliseconds. You get the fun aspect of a rear wheel drive car with the saftey of all wheel. [thumbsup]

Look for a 2005-6 Saab 9-2X Aero. It is a WRX in GM clothes for a couple thousand less.
Everything on the car, other than the sheet metal, is 100% Subaru. Check out saab92x.com, if you interested in more info.
i could totally see you in a wrx or 9-2x bro... it's really YOU
that said, i think the AT versions suck so make sure you get a rower
I've got a real Saab, a 20 year old 900 SPG serviced by Morin Brothers when I lived in SLO. Car has about 290K on it and I rebuilt the engine about 2 years ago. It's like a brand new car.
The WRX is pretty sweet though and so is the Infinity. Or if you want a challenge, how about a slightly older Porsche 911SC?

Alright, don't laugh, but a buddy of mine has an '03 Pontiac Vibe GT - 180 hp I-4, no turbos or anything and similar tot he above, it's a Toyota Matrix in GM clothing. 2003 was the first model year and he has something like 125k on his with only clutch work done (6 spd manual). You can get one very cheap as they aren't much over $20k even brand new. But the newer models all have lower HP numbers which is kinda awful.
I do dig those Subaru's, though. But not the new ones cause I don't like what they did with the nose - the original WRX (with the wing [thumbsup]) - it's like the modern Superbird.
Most of these Saabaru options and the G35 won't be much more fuel efficient than your current ride. AWD Subarus and Nissan's VQ engine aren't known for their fuel economy.
Saab's 9-3 and 9-5 are pretty efficient though. Some of them doing 30's for highway driving. With the economy and Saab's notoriously poor resale, you could probably get a practically new one in your price range. You could also look at the Acura TSX. It's pretty comfy and pretty sporty. My friend has one and I found it to be like a much more pleasant version of my Civic Si.
Speaking of which, if you're into hot hatches and rice rockets, the Si, VW GTI and Mini will all return great all around mileage while being pretty fun.

Careful, while the G35 is indeed badged as a Skyline in Japan (same car different name) it is in no way close to our understanding of a Skyline in the US which is the GT-R. There is no comparison between the G35 and a Skyline GT-R (3.8L twin turbo V8 producing a claimed 485hp).
The G35s rock if you need a real backseat. If not the Nissan Z coupe is a sweet ride with a more sporting nature. The two cares share the same engines and underpinnings. You can find an 03-05 of either around 15K and sometimes an 06 with a little higher mileage.
I'm considering a commuter myself and have found there are a lot of cool cars and trucks in the 15k range. Good luck with your search.

Hey guys scooby's are not economy cars they have quite a thirst, my son was a WRC mechanic with the works team for many years and occasionally came home in one of the chase cars, yes it was bloody fast and boy could it drink gas!! [bang]
If i were in the market for an eco compact i'd look real hard at the new VW Golf range they have some really nice models with good gas mileage's and good build quality. [thumbsup]

For commuting 35 miles back and forth on the highway? Probably a Jetta TDI. Barring that, an econobox.
The only thing you find you have more of by driving a "cool" car on the highway as opposed to an econobox is speeding tickets.

I live 12 miles outside of Soldotna Alaska down Funny River Road ( great fun on a Duc in the summer ), in the past month we've had 2 weeks of -25 to -40 then it warmed up to 35 to 40 and rained , the we got some light snow. So my daily drive is 12 miles of twisty snow covered black ice. nice rides.
Assuming you need more than two seats
Emphasis on fun and economy:
Mazdaspeed 3 - I think the resale on these will put it above 15k, but what I read they are fun
Dodge SRT-4 - Probably deserves to be reviled for being related to the Neon, but they are fast, sip gas, are highly mod-able, and reliableish. I took a ride in one, and I was impressed.
+1 RSX type S - from what I can tell this is the "new" Civic Si.
Cooper S or new Civic Si - beware of the clutch problem on the Si, though.
More Luxo: these probably bend the 15k barrier
Mentioned before, but any MT G35 - this has the 300hp engine, is RWD
Altima SE-R - FWD, but pretty fast. Has the ubiquitous Nissan V6
BMW E36 M3 - Still love this car. Low-mileage examples are getting harder to find, though.
Good luck, let us know what you pick out...

Amen to the bad dealer network. The other problem is a lack independent shops that work on VWs. We have had nothing but VWs since '95 and been quite happy. Before that was '92 Civic SI, one of the few cars that earned a name, "That Stupid Little Red Car". No more reliable than the VWs, but without the comfort, handling and features. Before that, mostly BMWs. Love the older BMWs.

I'm telling you the G35x that my friend bought has all of this and gets 26mpg on the highway with big V6. I've worked at a dealership that BMW's, Audi's, VW's, Jags, and Subaru's and the G35 for the price is the best out of all of them. Very comparable interior to an Audi which I think has the best in the business, Bose sound system with bass speaker, all leather ( the reclinable back seats are awesome), wood trime, zenon headlights, Probably the coolest all wheel drive system I've seen, and is cheeper to work on. Subarus are good cars and fairly cheep to maintain but most of the WRX drivers are 18-24 douche bags IMO. I had never been a fan of Infiniti's until my buddy showed me his and let me drive it. It has plenty of power (probably to much for my lead foot) and handles great. My next ride for sure.
Gas mileage on the G35's leaves something to be desired-about 21 around town (but I know my wife has a slightly heavy foot). Great cars though. Handle great, very comfortable (heated leather seats), headlights kick ass, classy looking car.

My sister-in-law has a Mini. Cute and fun, and they handle great. The flip-side to the go-kart-like handling is that the ride is very harsh on bumpy pavement. We live in MN, and the Mini can do a good job of shaking your teeth fillings loose on our moon-cratered roads. [laugh]
They aren't very good in any kind of real snow (3" or more), if that's a significant consideration for you. They don't weigh much and have little ground clearance. I suppose some true snow tires would help, but an AWD car will always outshine it in inclement weather.

do they make more power, or something i'm missing besides the "z"?

they are built around the same fundamentals. The biggest differences I see are sheet metal and interior design especially between the g35 coupe which is pretty much a 350z rebadge with nicer leather. the impression i get from reviews is the 350z is the sports car and the infini coupe is the sport tourer.
I'm sure I've over simplified but if you do a search on g35 coupe v. 350z i'm sure one of the rags has done a comparo.
As far as I know the chassis' are slightly different. The G has a longer wheel base...
Get you a $700 Taurus with 165,000 miles. Worked for me, been a fantastic car. Lots of room mid-high 20's for fuel mileage too ~

Because of the aluminum construction it's 1000# lighter than anything in it's class. They truly drive like it's a much smaller car. My best friend has one and it's f-ing amazing!

The older S8s are awesome cars. Probably the cars I saw the fewest problems on when I was an Audi Tech. Those 4.2 motors are bulletproof.
the new volvo C30 is awesome
Hell, so is the new bentley.
Anyone care to recommend a car that's actually, you know less than 15K as he asked for?

anything less than 15k and is new is going to be a piece of shit economy car.
the entry price on the yaris is 12k, add power windows and ABS and a fuel gage and it is over 15. same on the micra and the rest of the lot.. elantra, etc.

As far as I know the chassis' are slightly different. The G has a longer wheel base...
the G35 and the 350 are totally different cars, the only thing they share is the engine bottom end and the tranny bell housing..
the G36 i think shares the chassis with the 350, but the G35 is differernt

That's sort of the point-he wants mileage, and a warranty in the 15k range. I'm not sure why recommending things, that while nice, don't fill the requirements are any use. For those requirements, he gets a cheapy little car. Cue the Rolling Stones.

I'm commuting 35 miles each way to work now, and the Volvo sucks gas (literally), it has 116000 on the clock and is starting to fall apart so i figure it's time to upgrade.
i want something fun, and a warranty would be great! i figure I'm thinking in the $15,000 range
yes the land yachts are nice... but i'm staying the hell away from VW / Audi.

GF has a yaris - and you are correct, with Power things it's about 15k - but i don't want that, nor am i looking for a brand new car.
the volvo mileage sucks, i would be more than happy with 20mph-ish.
Right now a used G35 sounds pretty nice, but i'm still very open to suggestions.

honda fit http://autos.yahoo.com/2009_honda_fit_5_spd_mt/
35 mpg highway, good crash ratings, starting MSRP is 14.7 k, and it's a honda so run it until armageddon

do you like the volvo?
we have a 98 S70T5 that consistently gets about 18 city and 26 hiway with mid-grade gas. maybe a later model volvo... blue book on my 98 is $5000, so you can get a much newer one.
i've had 5 volvos, i love them

eh, i liked it at first, but after owning it for a couple years... i'm pretty bored with it.
my car gets about 13city and 23ish highway - sucks
it's got 114k on the clock and it's showing it's age pretty bad.

not true at all. they are very similar cars with minor body mods and ecu changes to differentiate them aside from the dealer experience and warranties.

As far as used under 15K cars a quick search for passenger cars, under 15k, between 2003-2009 with under 50K miles returned these possibilities
2003-2004 Acura RSX and RSX Type S
2003-2004 Acura TL 3.2 and TL 3.2 Type S
2003-2004 Audi A4 1.8T and 1.8T quattro
2005 Audi A4 3.0
2003-2005 Cadillac CTS
2005-2008 Dodge Magnum
2006-2007 Ford Mustang
2005-2007 Honda Accord
2005 Lincoln LS
2005-2008 Mazda 3 or Mazda 6
2004-2005 Mazda RX-8
2005-2008 Nissan Altima (S, SL, SE)
2005-2006 Saab 9-3 2.0T
2003-2007 Subaru Impreza
2005-2007 Toyota Camry
2005-2008 Toyota Corolla
2004-2005 VW Golf Gti 1.8T
2005 VW Golf GTI VR6
2004 Volvo S40 2.4L
2004 Volvo S40 T5
Almost all of these offer room for 4, over 22 mpg highway and a modicum of performance. Your options are wide and varied my friend. How about choosing a few and asking for opinions/experiences with those models?
I feel now would be a good time to ask if there is a budget for insurance and annual maintenance. This could sway things as well.

And here I'll push for the Mazda 3 again. This thing barely needs maintenance. Although, a simple belt change is a little more of a pain than it should be.

I'd agree, and also heavily suggest the Acura. But for a car that *has* to get you somewhere, reliably and inexpensively, fun is harder to come by.
Thats what the bike is for.
I have seen 3 very good contenders mentioned:
Mini
Acura
Mazda3
There just isn't a lot of other used or new fun cars out there for the price.

BC.
Results of a "fun car" search
sports car, 10-15K price, less than 50k miles, 2000-2010, within 100 mi of Charlotte NC
2001 Honda S2000
2003-2005 Mazda Miata
2004 Mazda RX8
2002 Mercedes CLK 430
2002-2005 Mini Cooper and Cooper S
2003-2005 Nissan 350Z
2002 Porsche Boxter (cheated it has 67K miles)
2005 VW GTI VR6
The 3 I'd look at from this list

My 88 turbo drank it like a big block.
Edmunds shows the RX8 as 16/22 mpg
Not exactly great for a 2L engine...
If you're looking for a 'fun' car, I still think that the 200hp Acura TSX Type-S or the Mazdaspeed3 are your best choices.
I watched a well-driven Mazdaspeed3 embarrass some pricey competition at a Road America track day last summer. They're rockets - that 2.3L engine makes 263hp, and it's wrapped in a very subtle ("radar-invisible") package. ;D
A gently used Mazdaspeed3 (http://www.cars.com/go/search/search_results.jsp?ct=17&tracktype=usedcc&searchType=22&cid=&dlid=&dgid=&amid=&cname=&rd=&ddrd=30&zc=55115&makeid=30&modelid=8376&pageNumber=&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE%20descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7CE-ANY%7CM-_30_%7CB-16000%7CH-%7CD-_8376_%7CN-N%7CR-10000%7CI-1,7%7CP-PRICE%20descending%7CQ-descending%7CX-popular%7CZ-55115&aff=national) sells for ~$15,500...

Based on how my regular 3 begs to be beaten, I can't see how one could gently use a Speed3.
07 Honda Civic SI
200 hp and like 35 mpg on the freeway. If I was willing to spend $17k on a car right now, I'd totally get one (I'm waiting a few years until I'm done with school).
They are very zippy around town but still get great gas mileage. They certainly aren't quite as fast as a G35, but they are very nimble and get much better gas mileage.
I've got an 01 Maxima and my wife has a G35, the civic SI was probably as fast as my maxima (which gets 23 mpg like clockwork), but more nimble. Almost as quick as the G35 and much less thirsty.

I see your point. Maybe I should use the phrase "low mileage" instead of "gently used".
The Speed3 would still be a great car. Find a copy with ~20k miles on it, and budget a few extra $$ for track-day tires+brakes. ;D

I know you said no VWs, but for under 15k?
I walked out with a brand new golf (rabbit) for right at 15k. Has a 50k warranty, and if you get one now i think it has free services for the first 36k.
I've got 49k miles on mine so far and have had 0 problems.
if not a VW, I'd have to say the mazada 3 is probably your best bet if you want a warranty on it.
the WRX is a tasty option, but I've seen how alot of people who own those drive them, and I'm not sure if I'd want a used one [laugh]
All 2009 new VW's have free regular maintenance for the 1st three years. They also just change their oil change/service schedule to 10k miles! (except routan)...
I've had an '03 MINI Cooper S since new, and it's been a very reliable, fun to drive car. Nothing's gone wrong yet, except tires (Knock wood), and it has a LOT more room inside then you would think.
