So I went for a nice long 120 mile ride today, and decided to take a break at downtown Plymouth's waterfront main strip, which is halfway between Boston and Cape Cod in Massachusetts, for those who don't know...
I was parked on the side of the street outside a coffee shop just hanging out next to my S4, and a beautiful 1098 Tricolore w/a bunch of tasty mods went crawling by me......He saw my Monster and I, so I pointed at his bike and gave a [thumbsup] in appreciation.....Well, it was as if I wasn't even there, because he just rode by, no gesture back or anything... ???
So then, I see him circle around and come back towards me in the other direction.... and at this point, I had started my bike and was getting ready to leave....So he pulls in next to me, and I say "Beautiful bike, man!! :D You don't see a Tricolore like that every day!!!"
To which he responds, in a stand-offish "I'm better than you" manner; "Yeah, I know....", and proceeds to walk inside, with this tough-guy look on his face.....I might as well have been riding a moped...... [roll]
I was totally expecting to maybe meet a fellow Ducatisti and hopefully strike a up a conversation not only about his 1098, but about ducs and riding in general...keep in mind, I was the only Moto rider parked there!! What a prick..
I guess a$$holes aren't exempt from puchasing Ducatis, are they..... :-\

I get that regularly. Whenever I'm in downtown and I spot a Ducati, I stop to chat with the owner. It's part of the politiking I do for the club. I sometimes end up with a "Oh yeah." and a turned back.
One day when I was at McGill a 999 parked on campus. I walked over and started chatting, mentioned I had a 916, etc. He just blew me off and walked away. From what I gathered he was a janitor, or some sort of maintenance staff. Seems the 999 blew his ego out of proportion.

Yeah, good point. I suppose that I think of an enthusiast (in any field) as someone who wants to share that enthusiasm with anyone with even a bit of interest (or even those who would rather not hear about it!) Anybody with the money can go out and buy a Ducati, whether they are really very enthusiastic or not. They're the ones I'm referring to as Ducati owners. The enthusiasts are the ones I'm calling Ducatisti.
Or we could just use the term "jerk" and "cool person." That would make things more clear.
As an aside, years ago I participated in a usenet newsgroup about wine. The members debated for some time about how to refer to themselves and each others. What they eventually came up with was "wine bozo." Perhaps I'm a Ducati Bozo.

Honestly though, I'm the same way!! I was just out today hitting the State Forest back roads (which are awesome.. [moto] ) I pulled over to take a break and had a 1/2 hour conversation w/a really nice guy on a Goldwing...He was saying how he's been riding for 20+ years, and a Monster was always a bike he'd wanted to try riding....
I said "Hell, take it up the street a mile and check it out, I trust you!! " (I did, too.....He was w/his wife, seemed very responsible, had owned several sport bikes in the past....I normally NEVER let people ride my bike..)
He replied "Thanks for the offer, but no...I don't want to be the a$$ hole who dumps your Monster...That should be you!!" [laugh]
It's ALL good. Whatever they ride. Talk to everyone.
Had a trash truck driver come up to me, and for a split second I thought like a jerk and was going to get snobby (forgive me: I was a newbie). Come to find out the guy used to RACE Ducatis in the last 60's and early 70's. He was GREAT to talk to - and I almost missed that opportunity because I judged too quickly.
Now I talk to everyone and wait for them to let me know if they're cool or a jerk.
We need different motorcycles. How boring would it be if everyone rode the same bike, same color. BLECK!!!
Im usually really friendly and talk to everyone about bikes. Unfortunetly there are so many Ducs in the Bay Area that you are bound to get snubbed by a lot of people, ESPECIALLY if you ride a really dirty looking 620. You get over pretty quick and realize that it's thier loss that they didnt get to meet a really cool person. 8) ;D
I am doing some work on this guys house and he is a huge bike nut. He has tons of dough, a couple beemers, a superduke, a honda, and a brand new 848. My battery died one day because i left the light on (stupid parking light) and I asked him for jump. He RAN to the garage to get the charger and it seemed that he was happy to help me out. Charger didnt work so he pushed me down the street so I could pop the clutch. When it fired up I rev'd it a few times and smiled and said that he LOVES loud things! He then went into his garage and started all of his bikes one by one to rev them for me! He had the biggest smile on his face and we talked about bikes for about a half an hour after.
some people own motorcycles... some people are riders... [thumbsup]
I've had folks chat with me for ages about my bike and then apologize for taking up so much of my time. My answer is always "Hey, you don't put that much effort into a bike unless you like attention. No worries."
But I'll add that I don't expect other Ducati owners to be cool: Good taste has nothing to do with being an a-hole, and vice versa.

I had a similar experience yesterday.
I was filling my 696 at a gas-station and two guys pulled up: one on a Japanese sportsbike, and one on a Ducati sportsbike (possibly a 900 Supersport?).
I was keen to ask the Ducati rider what exactly his bike was. I got an acknowledgement by the Japanese-bike rider, but blanked by the Ducati rider :(
I'd only let him off if he was a traditionalist and refused to acknowledge the existance of the 696 [laugh]

I've been riding bikes for a very long time and I've seen a dramatic change in the Ducati owner demographic. Especially in the past 5 years or so.
Somebody who is that big of a jerk, if he was really douchebagging, might find their bike on its side when they come back out in the parking lot.
Some of my friends are plain mean.
Afterall, though, he was apparently on it to be seen, and there's no way to be seen better than being on a tricolore, than to be on one with a bent handlebar, and parking lot rash on the fairings.

Last summer we all went for a ride... and somebody posted about seeing us.... "I saw a bunch of Ducs ride by and I thought it was you.... but then I knew it was you when I saw Cierra on her Ninja 250 in the middle of the pack." It was kinda humbling to be told that we were recognized by the Ninja 250 in our midst and not by our own merits. If you ride, and you are not a jerk.... then you can hang with us... hell... if you are interested in riding... and want to learn more... feel free to join in. The world could use a few more friends.

Not me. Another riding friend. A 'fellow rider' bashed his choice of Honda dirtbikes for racing, and was abrasive about it. We paid for our food and left. He planted his boot mid tank and it toppled over. I was in disbelief.
I didn't feel too bad, because the brotherly love was not there, and the blue bike was hideous to begin with.

I might get slammed for this, but most guys I've talked to on SBKs have been d!cks. Granted, I ride a lowly 620 with matching tank dents and am probably not worthy to look at, let alone own a 1098 or whatever. But, when I'm at a spot hanging out and the local 'Busa club riders are a lot nicer than the Duc SBK guys, it makes me sad. It's all about the same ride, no matter what you ride.
I have a really nice S4 (in my opinion) and I love talking to everyone out there. Hell, I will talk to a guy on an enduro for hours given the time and an interesting fellow. But I have for sure been blown off by my fair share of riders, even ducati owners.
Its funny how you can totally tell in 15 seconds whether someone (with a ducati) actually knows sh!t about their bike or the companies or whether they spent dads money on hte newest and latest bike. I had a guy with a 1098 come up to me outside a coffee shop last year and ask me why my clutch was sooo loud. I was fricken speachless [roll] . So I spent 10 min. talking to him and filling him in. He replied with "I dont like that at all".
WTF.
Hey Johnster,,,,,thats unfortunate. Gives me the impression that he might think a little highly of himself & bike. He could have said thanks.
Sometimes hard to have a conversation while a bike is running,, would be his only defence.

Don't sweat any of it.
If you are riding twisties, it's hard to be focused on what some CH thinks of you.
If you are just using your bike to get to the bar on Tuesday nights, then maybe you deserve it.
If the other guy is also just showing up at a bar on Tuesday nights, then he is probably a loser too.
I know of a guy who bought a 999s which is has about 800 miles on the odo and is sitting under a tarp on the sidewalk in front of his apartment building. He goes outside and starts it up once a month or so. I tried to get him to sell it but he's convinced he's a biker and "will ride it".. whatever man.
Don't forget folks.. There are bikers and then there are people who happen to own a bike. Not the same thing.
For all we know the guy had to take a major dump, so he couldn't stick around to chat [laugh]

maybe he could buy a copy of "Everyone Poops" and leave it on his bike?
OR the "Nobody Poops But You".

even i wouldn't do that. I am a motorcyclist first and foremost. i have had on occasion been snubed by riders of other brands but i have yet to have that kind of reaction from a ducati rider. i wouldn't even do that to bad kitty if i saw her. even though she rides a 696 she still is a motorcyclist and it still is a ducati, sort of

I always talk to riders. I came into the office one day and a chick was sitting at security waiting to have an interview, and she had her helmet on her lap. I asked her what she rode... and she blew me off. Turns out it was a Ninja 250. But I figured she was nervous about the interview... or thought I was being a perv and trying to pick up on her. Oh well.
I have trouble hearing people talk when I have my helmet on. I had an attendant say something to me about my bike the other week, I say "I'm sorry what did you say?" Then he repeats it again without talking louder and I still can't hear the guy so I just kinda nodded. Probably looked like an idiot but whatever. Had I heard what he was saying I would have carried on a conversation like I usually do with anyone talking about bikes. To the OP, maybe that was something like your case.
Later that ride "Gixxer McSquid" as someone here put it pulls up next to me at a light. He didn't really have much to say when I tried to start a conversation. I don't think its because I wasn't on a ricer but because the guy didnt really have anything to talk about and is an "owner" not a 'rider' which was brought up here before. Light changes he proceeds to pull away, later pops the front wheel up a few times in traffic (wouldn't call it a wheely). I hang back a few cars...
Some people are so full of themselves it's pathetic.
I've run into a few snobs in my 30 years of motorcycling myself.
Although it probably isn't bike specific, I've noticed it more from BMW and HD riders than anyone else.
I've met a very few Ducati snobs, but I've found they seem to be more the exception than the rule.
In "pre-renaissance" version of myself, I've enjoyed taking them down a notch or two.
These days I just smile and turn my head.

The wreck I just had was pretty funny. All the EMT people and firemen were like "Ducati, that's a nice bike". I corrected them and said "WAS a nice bike" I sat and chatted with them about it and bikes while they fiddled with my foot.
The police officer asked who made the bike and one of the fireman said "Ducati", she then asked "who makes that" and in unison me and the fireman responded "Ducati".
Then on the ride to the hospital me and the EMT talked bikes and were talking about him looking at a Ducati tourer. He had a Harley and just didn't like it and had been looking at them for awhile.

Hey, I think that was me......I was there with an ST3 and Bonnieville. I had a chat to an ST3 owner in a country town on the weekend, who pulled over to check out the 2 Monsters parked (yes we stopped for coffee again) He gave us some good advice on the local roads. Always nice to have a chat [thumbsup]
yeah and when he told us about the local roads and one was 'sand, but you'll be OK - I made it through' the guy looked as tough as nails....I was thinking it was going to look like the planet Luke Skywalker grew up in...Tunisia! Some "dudes" take the air freshener out of their crappers when they buy something really nice. I guess spending money makes some people more elite than others. I enjoy motorcycles of all types, and I like to talk to other motorcyclists about why they chose what they did, what they like about it, what they wish was better, etc. Bikes are cool, real mechanical pieces of engineering. Lots to talk about.
Anyway, only a poseur would take the compliment the way this guy did. Talking to him would have been a watse of your time; look at it like he did you a favor.
