ALright.. I admit it... I speed. I got my S4R 2 weeks ago.. and it's just so easy to go above the limit. What a rush I'me getting addicted. I love it.... BUT I am paranoid ALL the time. I don't want to get pulled over. Costly and embarrassing. What will I say to the cop who pulls me over for doing 90mph? .. Officer.. I'm sorry,, I just got my bike and it feels great to go at 100mph.. sorry It won't happen again. I SWEAR !! [evil]
I must put a radar on it.. or how do YOU guys speed? When do you do it? Let's not make it a moral issue.. we all speed.. [moto]
I was doing 80mph on the freeway. Feels fast to me. Cars kept passing me up though. I clocked myself with my GPS and found that 80 was really only 72. Now I will do a psuedo 80-85 and don't worry about getting a ticket since I'm really only doing up to 75. I figure as long as other cars are passing me up I have a better chance at not being noticed by [leo].

this is what you do when the cop pulls you over doing 90 - http://ducatimonsterworldwide.org/index.php?topic=2981.0 (summary: you get a ticket)
Riding fast is fun, but it is way more fun when going 50 feels like 100 on a twisty back road. I guess it helps to know the road and only do it in short bursts [evil] [moto]
I cruise anywhere from 75 to 85 on the Freeway.
If I go any slower in the fast lane I have Cars up my Ass or they are constantly trying to pass me :-\
On the Street I stay as close to the Speed Limit as I can.
Oh and yeah the speedo is off specially with a 14t so 80 is like 72 for me. I use my GPS for the actual speed.
For me its all about the time of the day and the road. If your coming or going from work like everone else, likely not a great oppertunity to open er up. Early morning or late evening likely a better time. Someone before me emntioned its great to hit the twisties, I definately agree. Nothing beats teh rush of coming onto a corner a hair hot (which may only be 5 miles over the posted limit), and then at least if you get a ticket its cheap (and you may even be able to talk your way out of it) as oppose to going 100 in a 70 zone.
I always say trust your gut feeling... and watch for brake lights up ahead.
blood oth [moto]
On the Highway I rode with the traffic generally. It's on the secondary roads where I had and I say HAD the most fun and ran at whatever speed I wanted because I felt I knew the back roads well enough and that I was brave ??? enough to outrun the " man " [leo] and I found out that running at my speeds meant a crash that means I am not physically going to beable to ride again until next year according to my Surgeon and medical bills that so far have totaled $67,000.
On the highway, I usually keep cagers way behind me, my cousin was murdered by one, so because of this I keep a buffer of 1000 yards when ever possible - i'm usually 10 to 20 mph above the traffic speed. The LEOs here in Houston (and the surrounding environs) have been pretty aggressive so on back country roads I stick to the speed limit.

Any of you has a radar detector installed? recommendations..?
If you have a problem speeding..you get a 620. You can't speed that much but hellafun on the twisties and surface streets!!
I have way more fun under 40 than over 60. Turns is where it's at. In WA state the troopers will take you down for 6 over and not blink at your tears. I try not to speed (too much) but engage spider-senses every time I throw a leg over. My number is way past "up" in this regard.
err Vindigo has a 620 ;D http://ducatimonsterworldwide.org/index.php?topic=2981.0 (http://ducatimonsterworldwide.org/index.php?topic=2981.0)
speed limit on the highway in Denmark is 110 km/h...sometimes 130...
Yesterday I tried to go over 170 with my 695 and its just hard work.
Correction...the GPS just reads 143 max :o
Anyway its nice to do it to take over cars but I could net see me doing it more than minutes.
At least not without a hell of a fairing.
By the way, how is the little one from DP ? More than cosmetic ?
I will ride south to the alps in July...lets see how the German Autobahn feels [leo]

I don't ride on the highway much...don't care for it.
I tend to ride too fast everywhere...I'm working on it. ;)

Maybe you have a problem with yours, mine is plenty quick.
As for the topic, I speed a bit but not near as much as I used to. Losing your license for a while tends to make you more cautious. Now with the exception of getting pulled over on the bike a year ago for passing a semi on a double yellow, I haven't had a ticket in 8 years.
I don't feel safe on the highways unless I am going slightly faster than traffic. Lately it seems cagers are either hypermiling (often in the wrong lane) or going 20-40 MPH over the limit. This means speeding.
Can't get into top gear unless I'm going 70+ mph.
Stay just a bit faster than the flow of traffic.
If a 14th sprocket is on does it affect the speedo? Sounds like a couple of you mentioned that...

No, speed is measured at the front wheel for mechanical speedometers and rear wheel for electronic. Speedometer error does seem to be 5-10% high, though.
Highways are boring, they square off your tires, and they're full of vehicles with four wheels whose drivers are drinking lattes and chatting on the phone. Impossible to ride at double digits when I'm forced to using them at all.
Yes, riding with Shadowchaser will involve speed. Have to do that again some day, but it was certainly easier when he came to all of us. ;D
even our 620 will purr along at 100 all day...just takes a little longer to get there.
Can't even think about speeding - I have one point left on my license.
Pretty much all patrol cars carry lazer-based speed cameras. Loads of speed cameras mounted above roads etc.
You don't get 'pulled over' anymore - they just mail you the ticket etc. :-\
On the last group ride, we made the mistake of putting the guy with the 900SS in the lead. He was hungry & looking for a place to eat lunch. Needless to say, the speeds were a good bit over the limit in on back-country 2-lane highways in WV. Good bit over the limit = double in places
JM
Um, I'm even guilty on a Ninja 250 (http://ducatimonsterworldwide.org/index.php?topic=2613.0). :-[
On my 695, with stock gearing, if I wanted to stay legal on the freeway, I'd never get out of 3rd gear.
Of course I speed. Everyone speeds. Speed limits are silly low, and completely irrational. I call it civil disobediance.
I never speed on the freeway. I repeat - NEVER! What's the point? In order to have fun on the freeway I would have to ride crazy-fast, like 100+ MPH. It doesn't make sense to me at all.
Now, twisty two-lane roads are a different matter altogether.
I ride within my "comfort zone." Fast enough to make it interesting, but not so fast that you don't leave yourself any room to deal with the unexpected. I think the cops where I live are all using laser. You will never see them before they see you unless you ride around with binoculars taped to your helmet.

My radar has saved me from many tickets in my car. Of course they start their laser on me, then I am screwed, but if they are aiming at someone else and my radar picks up the signal, then I am warned and I slow down.

My first thought when I read the thread title was "well, DUH!"
It might depend on your definition of speeding and of highway. It's a long way to an interstate from here. "Highway" means 2-lane roads, some of them quite lovely in their twistiness and covered bridgedness. In all honesty I can't claim I ever really go the speed limit unless it's raining, but usually I'm only 20% or so over the posted limit. OK, 30%. 40%, tops...

Thanks for the well wishes. The crash was on 4/5 w/ a Thoracotomy done on 5/9 to repair a punctuerd right Lung and drain 300 Mls. of blood from my chest cavity that arose from one of the 4 broken ribs I got in the crash but wasn't found on the Emergency room CT Scan at the time of the crash. I had 1200 Mls. of blood and fluid squeezed out of my Chest cavity in a "minor" surgery done around the 1st of May without Anesthesia by inserting 2 tubes into my lower left side and that led to the discovery of the reason for the Thoracotomy and discovery of the lung puncture. The crash details are posted under the " Crash Analysis " section. To add insult to injury...I got a Failure to Control ticket in the ER.
Yeeessh, DoubleEagle, that doesn't sound like fun... Best wishes for a speedy recovery... [thumbsup]
As far as speeding?? Yeah, I do....a lot.. But I'm not stupid about it... You know the scene in Ferris Beullers Day Off where Ed Rooney is running down the school hallway, and stops and walks every time he passes a classroom door??

I suppose it's more likely that I should take this as meaning that you can't go under 100.
Just back from a ride. First EVER ticket on a motorcycle -- I was on the 998. I've been riding for 8 years, so my number was due. Motorcycle cop, too! Frist thing the cop said to me was, "Whadya get it up to?" haha. I thought that was a good sign. I honestly didn't know, so I said just that. The good news is he didn't charge me with reckless driving, and just gave me a speeding ticket for 65 in a 45. Bummmmmerrr.
I'm usually at 80-90 on the highways unless they come to a crawl in which case you'll find me splitting lanes at 10-20mph over whatever the cages are crawling at.
I tend to keep my speed to about 10-15 over whatever the limit might happen to be. I don't usually even look at the speedo very often. Just keep up with the faster part of traffic.
Unfortunately, I live in VA, the only state where radar is illegal, and the cops all have radar detector detectors in their cars. The fastest way to get pulled over? Have a radar detector on.
I do about 50% hiway, 50% city riding. Unfortunately, all of our roads around here are flat and straight. It's a good 1/2 hour to any twisties.
of course not. that would be against the law

I went down on my #1 S4Rs, There is 1 mile on the R , and that was put on by the Ducati Tech at setup. The R was delivered to me in a trailer about a week after my crash, (#242 of 450). All I can do is look at it and wonder if I'll ever ride it ! The S4Rs came through the crash with alot of mud and grass underneath it but as far as damage ,all that is in need of replacement is the clutch lever which is bent. There are scuffs and scratches on the case covers but they only show up when you are within 5 feet of the bike. I think even though the S4Rs has been washed to get most of the dirt and grass off , when I can a good cleaning will leave it looking like not much happened to it at all. Wish I was as tough as that Monster !
one of the reasons that i downsized from my vtr 996 to my s2r 800, was the speed and power issue. I mean the superhawk was no s4rs, but it still was a 1000cc twin and it was plenty fast. my friend on a harley passed me at around 100mph. so i hammered it and took the superhawk up to 161. I was in a stretch of 128 in burlington ma. by the time i decided to slow down, it was like all of the other cars were coming at me in reverse, at 100mph! :o :o :o. I thought that those days were behind me, but its just so easy to gain momentum on the big bikes, i found it more enjoyable to ride a bike that cant approach those take off speeds. since i didn't want to ride that fast again, why bother to ride a bike that fast in the first place. now, i ride a bike that is as fast as my 1986 ATC 200X!, now if i can only get it to sound like "johnsters", S4r, i would be happy. so the short answer is that i don't speed that much. when on the highway, i just try to stay alive long enough to reach my desired exit. [moto]

yes...but in spurts. i usually cruise at 80mph and +100mph in spots. anything above 80 is too much blast for me to maintain high speeds. hwy's are just there to get me to the twisties.
My commute to work is a 60 mph zone...most cagers going 70 mph. I try to get in the fast lane and run just fast enough that I do the passing (rather than the other way around). Seems safer that way [thumbsup]. Puts me in the 75-80mph range and close enough to the rest of the traffic on the road as to not get cops attention.
Twisties...all bets are off.
Now, in my car I have some fairly serious violations. 76mph in a 35. 106mph in said 60 zone....this one came with a reckless endangerment and failure to yield to a police officer, which was bullsh*t. You CANNOT see out of the back of an Exige S at all...there is no rear-view mirror. Look through the rear glass and all you see is motor and inter-cooler. When I saw him I slowed down and stopped...just took a while to see him ;D. I was sort of proud that he said I came off the exit ramp (35mph) at 97mph...sick but true. [evil]
No points on license...good lawyer 8)

A lot depends on what state you are speeding in. I live in PA and locals can not use radar, they can use the lines on the roads and timing devices (VASCAR)...which is bogus IMO...but.
The State boys can use radar but only when sitting, not moving...so they get into unmarked cars and devious hiding places.
Any of them are allowed to follow you to clock your speed but they have to do that for 0.3 mile so I've been let go 'cause I'm sure they didn't follow the specified distance but just caught up to me and pulled me over for good measure.
Ohio is a different story (I am close and ride there often). They can hit you with radar, lazer from front, side, rear, stopped, moving...you name it. The good thing is that the tickets are cheaper than PA and they don't report to PA if you pay 'em quick. Thus no points on your liscense.
So "yes" I speed...every time I ride. I try to use my head and know where to do it but sometimes I miscalculate.
Use your head, eyes and on the highway keep it to short spurts to get out of traffic packs...or just to wind-up cage drivers...or show the boob in the pick-up truck, or the teen in the "hot"car, who thinks it a NASCAR hot rod that his truck/car ain't squat.
Off topic: Did ya ever notice that the speed of a vehicle is inversely proportional to the size of the NASCAR sticker on the car??
Unfortunetly yes I do ;D
I have been amazed at how fast and reckless somes cars and pickups would drive in the twisties to try and not let me get by them....but I always did !
Unfortunately I do and fortunately I do. Whenever you try to follow the rules and have some dum dum in a car come flying by you doing like 80 you realize a few things if they mess up and hit you its their fault, but if you are flying and you hit them its your fault. You make the call

I never go any faster than 9 mph over the speed limit officially. However, I have noticed that when I do ride at this speed lots of people attempt to jam themselves up my low mounts. I guess they think they can stop their land yacht faster than I can stop my ~425+me pounds with full floating rotors. I ride like I'm invisible. I assume everyone approaching from the rear is going to rear end me. I take action to correct it.

I do speed, but I speed defensively. I try to go from one open pocket of traffic to another - I trust my ability to react to what I know is ahead over what I don't know is behind me. When I had a commute I could make on the bike, I found myself in the neighborhood of three digits just about every time I rode. And by three I mean 140.

I speed to some extent ...I tend to accelerate hard and fast at the light, do short spurts of acceleration to get around trucks, and to get away from traffic clusters. I like as much space as possible between me and the other guy to minimize the odds of something going wrong
Also, I'm pretty sure that that the speedometer on my bike is approximately 5-7 miles over on estimating the actually speed. ..It may say I'm doing 100, but I'm really doing around 93.
i usually cruise around 80-90mph on the open hwy. if there's traffic then i move fast enough to not be the slowest thing out there since it's hard to be hit from behind if you are outpacing them.
i have tried to keep myself closer to 70, but the bike was unhappy. it's stable and smooth at 80. at 70 the revs are too high or too low.
on backroads i'm usually at 50-70. i do slow down in most neighborhoods though.
i've been stopped a few times, but they either didn't really have anything on me and gave me a ticket, or "i couldn't clock you because of the other cars in the way." i live in PA and like ducman said, they can't use radar in motion. that time i got a ticket for failure to obey traffic control devices. $25 fine that with add'l fees tacked on took it to $90 ???
i figured since i was doing around 90 through traffic i should just pay it and take my lumps.

Can't even think about speeding - I have one point left on my license.
I'm in the same boat "2 Points left" and had some cops pull me over the other day for street racing. No ticket issued for lack of proof.
Thing is all but 2 of my points have come from a car and not one ticket was over 65mph offense. Just POS 25mph roads that should be 45MPH roads. Basic Speed traps I guess.
I use the rabbit technique on the highway. The Rabbit is the fastest thing on the highway and I chase at 1mph slower. on the backroads I'm +10 - 15mph but do slow down in neighborhoods.

In the map pocket of my tank bags, mostly. (It works surprisingly well there) Although I did replace the front mount of my Triumph ST tank with a 3/4" ball to use one of these
(http://www.ram-mount.com/index_files/mountingoptions.jpg)
http://www.ram-mount.com/products/motorcycles.htm (http://www.ram-mount.com/products/motorcycles.htm)
Which can alternatively hold the radar or a GPS. I actually went to the trouble of hard wiring all the V1 and H.A.R.D. stuff into the Triumph when I was riding it more.
I'm thinking of buying a new one now for the bikes/cars and having someone break the old one down and "stealth" mount it in the Monster.
Wow, I've never seen a car with handlebars. [roll]
I speed virtually all the time. Then again, people in this town go 10+ over the limit all the time anyhow. So I do between 10+ and 15+ with spurts of pure unadulterated speed here and there.
On the HWY it really depends on how fast traffic is going. I'd say about 90% of the time I'm within 5-10 mph of the rest of traffic. The other 10% is WOT up to the next pack of cars. I speed as the traffic allows. Sure I'll get up to 120+ and once a good bit more than that, but not if there are a lot of cars around. You're moving so fast that the car may check their mirrors which are clear one second and the next second you're right there where they are moving. (often without signaling)
As a general rule I usually do about 10 over the limit with bursts of speed usually about a half mile long. Nothing sustained.

I try like crazy not to speed, but the truth is sometimes when your all alone on a level stretch of road with no driveways, well speed can creep up on you. Having said that, reckless driving endangers everyone and is totally irresponsible. I've gone through my idiot stage of driving like raceday on public roads. The whole speeding ticket, hiked up insurance, crash concerns are really not worth it. Now, I go to a track where I can drive fast; its even encouraged.
