Title: New cigar thread for 2010
Post by: NoisyDante on February 12, 2010, 06:01:00 PM
I didn't want to resurrect an ancient thread on cigars, so let's start a new one.

I got into cigars about 4 years ago.  I initially picked up a 50 capacity humidor and over the years packed it with Rocky Patel, Graycliff, Gurkha, Tatuaje, Cohiba, 5 Vegas, Davidoff, etc.  I've since expanded to a 150 capacity box.

I found I have a preference for torpedos or toros, usually takes me about 50 minutes to casually get through one of those while I water the plants outside.  One of my favorite ways to relax after a trying day.

Best cigar I've had so far has been a Graycliff chateau grand cru toro.  The new Royal Vintage from Rocky Patel is surprisingly good a well.  Currently in my humidor I have some Cohiba XV, Rocky Patel Vintage 92, Graycliff G2, Liga Privada no9, and some Gurkha Black Dragons.

How about you guys?

No offense, but a lot of the cigars you have picked aren't that great, but it depends on your preference.

Go buy yourself a Perdomo Champagne or any other Perdomo Cigar.

You won't smoke anything else.

Perdomo actually rolls most brands anymore.......

I've met him as my shop here is one of the highest selling Perdomo Cigar Shops in the US.

Try one. If you can't find one locally.......PM me.

I'll send you one.

Just let me know the size, ring gauge, style, etc. that you like.

By the way........Davidoff is the most overpriced crap on the market.

Sorry, I am a cigar snob...........

Ah, I haven't had a cigar in forever...

Only thing I remember was that I liked maduro wrappers, and I liked something that didn't take a week to smoke. [cheeky]

Not offended at all, honestly the entire box of Cohiba XV's have zero draw.  The RP's are what I have around as a standard, those I enjoy.  I was also a bit unimpressed with the Liga Privada's, but they were worth a shot.  I like to vary what I buy so I can try new brands and find new favorites.

You're also right on Davidoff, no stick needs to be that much.  They're not a bad smoke of course, but not in my budget.

Have you had the Man O' War?

I've never heard of that brand.

Where are they rolled? or better who rolls them?

Nick Perdomo rolls most brands cigars.

Davidoff are way overpriced and shitty smokes. However, if you want to drop the coin on a name and want a very mild cigar, that is your ticket.

Cohiba's quality has gone to shit.

My brother went to medical school in Grand Cayman and he actually made a trip to Cuba.

He bought a box of Cohiba's there, from the factory, off the floor.

He shipped them to me via fedex (damn customs opened the package and sliced three of them half way down, so I could at least clip them and get half a smoke).

They make the beast with two backsing sucked and they were actual real cuban smokes. They drew like shit and were awful.

We only did this as a little side money making venture and needless to say......we lost on our investment as most that smoked them didn't believe they were Cuban. I would agree with them, but I knew the God honest truth they were Cuban as he bought then in Havana!

I used to work in a cigar shop when I moved to Ohio about 5 years ago; worked two nights a week to help out the owner and my cousin, who is an attorney, but worked there to get 25% off smokes. I have had most brands.

Perdomo's are the best I have smoked..........

The Man O War is an AJ Fernandez creation, rolled in Nicaragua.  I've ordered mine from Cigars International in Bethlehem, Pa.

I don't put much stock into Cuban brands, its a nice novelty IMO but not any better than what we can legally buy in the US.  I've had Cuban Cohiba's as well as the other Dominican made Cohiba's we all buy here.  Neither is what I'd choose if given other options.

I've smoked cigars off and on for the past decade.  I'd say most of the high end line is over priced for the flavor.  I tend to smoke the 'cheaper' sticks and get far more enjoyment out of them.  Still, my all time favorites are Padron 1926 No. 2 Maduro.

agreed on Cuban's as being a novelty item as it is forbidden fruit.

I just wish you could buy Cubita (Cuban Coffee) here. That is by far the best coffee I have ever had. I have a friend going to Cayman in a month and giving her money to bring me back a few pounds.

I think the quality of Cohiba's has gone to shit over the past 5 years. They just plain old suck but still sell for a premium.

This is a subject I know nothing about.

That is really a subjective question.

1. Flavor
2. Draw
3. Wrapper

The list could go on and on and on.

Some people love Acid's which I think are just shit. Some love Davidoff's which most heavy cigar smokers are overpriced crap because they are very "light" tasting.

Cigars are so subjective.

That is a hard one to answer and not sure it really can be.

It is like beer: everyone has a personal preference of what they enjoy.

Cuban coffee is the bomb, certainly an import America would benefit from.  By the way my local shop does have Perdomo Champagne sticks, I will pick up a few.  Thanks for the recommendation and the offer.   [thumbsup]

I've never had Acid, too much 'glitter' to that brand, I like more traditional cigars, nothing with flavors.

There are sort of two ways to compare cigars, physically and subjectively.  Physically one cigar can just be made better than another.  This would include whether or not the wrapper has large unsightly veins or the leaf is spotty and tattered.  Also, the cigar could be rolled too tight and doesn't draw, or rolled too loose and draws to the point of overheating and becoming bitter.  One cigar could just be made better than the other.

Subjectively, one could say a cigar is better due to the characteristics of that particular stick based on their personal taste.  I generally prefer mine to be medium-full bodied, usually a torpedo 6.0"x54.  Compared to an equal quality mild churchill, I'd say the former is better, but that's just me.

I am jonesing for some Cubita......!!!

Honestly, anything with the Perdomo label is a good stick.

Not trying to steer you to that particular stick, but all Perdomo's are quality.

I have been lucky enough to attend a Perdomo event where a master roller from Perdomo was there rolling fresh cigars.

The catch was you had to buy like 3 perdomo's and you got a freshly rolled cigar by the master roller.

God damn, that was a good smoke.

old standby- montecristo #2 or robusto - dominican wrap.

i too had a cuban one years ago overseas, way harsh, very spicy, not that smooth, liked the dominican brand better.

opus x - another good one if i ever find it again, too hard to find, too expensive.

if you want a davidoff style smoke at half the price, go for the macanudo brand, i always found them a good "gateway" premium cigar.  best of all time? no.  good for its price? i think so.

Short Storys tied with Bolivar Belicosas are great.

How well a cigar is kept is a key aspect in my enjoyment of a ceegar.  Ive had a well maintained Punch that I still remember to this day and Ive had a poorly kept Opus that I still remember to this day, for completely different reasons.

Pretty nice cigarrs and it was quite intersting to se them rolling cigars in the shop.

I've had a few short stories, I sometimes keep them around for guests also who I know won't get through something bigger.  And keeping my humidor at 70/70 is a battle.

I also like to order bundles of the Rocky Patel factory seconds, they're a third of the price as the banded sticks, they smoke the same, and most of the time I can't tell what made them seconds.  A vein here or a shade off there, totally doesn't matter.  Awesome way to save money and entertain buddies.

I have a buddy that is notorious for throwing away 1/2 a fine cigar.  Doesnt matter if he bought it or someone gives it to him.  Short Storys are perfect for that situation.

Some smokers do smoke cigars with the intention of tossing the last half, the thought being that after 20 or 25 minutes all that's left will be bitter and harsh.  I personally don't subscribe to that, but if that's what makes it enjoyable I guess who's to say it's the wrong way, right?  However, I'd rather not see a cigar I've given to someone left 3/4 unsmoked.

I have found that if I have lit and am smoking my stick right, I don't have the problem with the second half. Let it get too hot and blarg!

I like Robostos as they are about the right duration for how I smoke.

I have really liked the Casa Manga. The new Obscuro with the maduro wrapper is quite nice. And for 6 bucks a stick, jeesh...
I normally avoid Macanudo but the 1968 is a good smoke.

And there is a store brand that I smoke that is OK and I don't mind leaving it to burn while working on the bike.

I've found that if I blow through the stick after maybe every 3rd puff, it clears out some of the sedimentary flakes that just get more and more burnt, and really helps the cigar to be less harsh or bitter by the end.

Over the years i've had romeo y julieta's, cohiba's, Macanudo, acid (awful BTW), and now have a bunch of Montecristo #2's that are settling.  I have thought of trying the Man o' War and now can add Perdomo to my list.

Anyone have any experience with Padilla cigars?

Also, anyone ever order anything from Cigar.com ?

Nice way to save a little cash on these.  I didn't see anything wrong with a single stick either.

I usually order from cigarsinternational.com, the have good deals and nice sampler packs, and they always arrive well cared for.  No experience yet with Padilla, but I hear good things.

I'm a big fan of Onyx and CAO.  As for the subject of Cuban cigars, they suck.  My family is from Cuba but even Castro hasn't smoked Cuban cigars since the 70's.  They over farmed the soil so now its nutrient deficient and the tobacco tastes like crap.  I believe Dominicans are the way to go now.  The islands were made from the same type of volcanic discharge and have very similar soil makeup, except that the Dominicans haven't depleted their soils.

As for Cuban coffee, see if your local grocery store sells Pilon coffee/expresso.  Cafe con Leche, or Cuban coffee, is simply a little expresso, milk, and lots of sugar (at least that's how my grandma made it).

I totally agree with you, I have been to Cuba and from what I can conclude is most of the cigar manufactures/family's left Cuba and the 2ND rate guys came in like scrubs, so most of the cigars produced in Dominican republic, Nicaragua and Honduras are now equal too or better then Cuban cigars

Looks good, remember to use distilled water when you're preparing it.  The humidifiers and meters that come with them generally are not very good, it does pay to replace those as you are planning on doing.

Also, Overstock.com is surprisingly a good source for cigar accoutrement.  I got this humidor through them:

True, a lot of family's and rollers left Cuba.  I'm a fan of Graycliff cigars, and their master roller is Avelino Lara, who created Cohiba and rolled for Castro.

I didn't know that about the soil of Cuba.  I can't say I enjoy a particular region over another, as I smoke sticks from Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Bahamas, but I find they all have the potential to be of very high quality if done right.

Is it not like wine? your taste and perception of whats good or bad is highly individual? I'm new to this and absolutely no aficionado, but i guess what applies to wine is pretty much adaptable to cigars?

Really good looking humidor you got there!

I'm trying to do my homework here, some people say that 65% humidity is to prefer to 70%. Could it be better to have a higher humidity 70% if you have a high (warm) average temperature compared to us in Sweden, or I'm i totally off here? Idea being that it would evaporate less in a colder climate? :)

Totally, I think of cigars along very similar lines as wine.

And thanks, also haven't heard of the higher humidity idea for a colder climate.  I'd say that would hurt a cigar far less than drying it out.  I know it's usually best to try to maintain a 70/70 ratio (humiidity/degrees F) in your hummidor; easier said than done sometimes, but that may very well differ dependent on region (like baking times/temps in the mountains).  I know mine is humming around 73 on the dial.

Well I'm not hard to persuade so i was hooked when i read the subject  [laugh]

Humidor on it's way, now i got to decide which cigars to order.
Tried to find the Perdomo Cyrus recommended, no luck tough finding a retailer here in Europe. So instead I'm thinking of ordering this robusto sample pack of 10 cigars http://www.cigarone.com/cuban-cigars/kit.php?idkit=10 (http://www.cigarone.com/cuban-cigars/kit.php?idkit=10)

Looks like a good set, especially the Upman, Romeo y Julieta, and Bolivar.  My sampler of Perdomo's should be arriving tomorrow.

I have been smoking cigars for about 9 years and always have a couple CAO L'Anniversarie cameroon toros, Padron 3000 naturals, and Partagas Spanish Rosado Familia's in my humidor.  I also like Partagas Blacks, Punch Gran Crus, and Ashton Maduro 60s.

A friend gave me a Padron Family Reserve No.45 yesterday, getting excited to soke it later. Speaking of Cuban cigars, the best and worst cigars I've had were both Cuban: the best was a Montecristo Edicion Limitada 2008, and I can't seem to remember the worst one but I think it was also a Montecristo haha.

Finally got this in today.  Look what you've done, Cyrus!

The Champagne was really nice, it had a medium body to it, drew really well, and the ash was stiff and didn't fall onto my pant leg.  It came in a fancy lookin' golden cellophane wrapper.  Wasn't too overbearing either, no light headedness at the end, wasn't as strong as the sticks I generally get, but I liked it.   [thumbsup]

When I was first getting into cigars, I smoked a La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero chisel once on a half-empty stomach and was really enjoying it until it knocked me on my ass.  I can't even look at one now without turning a little green  :)

I remember getting sick on a dark CAO, I think it was an lx2, maybe 6 years ago in Boston.  Not a great feeling, smoked it too fast on an empty stomach.

That's why I like to give my friends shorter or at least cheaper cigars when I'm hosting cookouts and such.

I actually had the Lot23 the other night.  I had a crappy day at work so I smoked it while driving home.  Not the easiest thing to coordinate.  Took 3 days for the car to air out with the windows cracked open.   ???  Smoke was real nice though.  ;D

I'm about to go have another from my set, probably the Cameroon.

At the same time I ordered this sampler of Rocky Patels.  I really like the Olde World Reserves.

Had an H.Upmann down in Puerto Rico, not too shabby.  Also found a guy rolling fresh cigars in the Ritz Carlton lobby, bought a few for me and the guys.  Despite being horribly rolled with veins and trenches galore, it actually burned evenly and tasted good.

Kinda fun to have something so authentic and unrefined.  I was smoking it outside the El San Juan hotel when a bunch of richie rich older dudes joined me.  We proceeded to smoke out the entire entranceway.  They all had Montecristo's and Partaga's, but they didn't know what they were talking about when it came to cigars.  One guy said, "Oh boy this is strong, very robusto."  It was a churchill.  ;)

I've had a little humidor (holds 2 boxes) for about 15 years now and usually make a trip to Cuba once a year for a couple boxes. I also have a friend from work who goes to cuba several times a year and he usually brings me a box home. Honestly, I do find the quality of Cuban cigars inconsistant, but usually decent to very good. After years of smoking just about everything Cuba has to offer, my hands down favourite are good 'ol PUNCH coronas.

and edit to add: I also always bring home lots of coffee and a couple bottles rum.

I usually like to drink single malts and on my toplist is Oban and Ardbeg.
Today after a good diner with a fillet and asparagus a friend served a Makers Mark bourbon, was a bit sceptical at first since i am a single malt guy. Decided to offer one of my Montecristo's no5 to enjoy along to the bourbon.

I know this is very individually but the Bourbon and the Montecristo married really well, and i recommend you to try the two together!

PS
Frank Sinatra live at the Sands 1966 goes extremly well with any cigar ;)

Sinatra definitely goes well with a cigar, always a classy choice.

Through a complete stroke of luck by association, I've been given a bottle of Glenmorangie 25 year single malt.  I don't have the experience to appreciate it properly, but it does go nicely with a cigar.

It's about 3/4 empty now, haha, had a scotch tasting party a few weeks ago and everyone brought a bottle but donated their contributions to my bar for the next tasting round, so I'm up to my ears in scotch.  That bottle came from my friend's boss, a very well off music composer who recently cheated on his wife and now wants to quit drinking.

That evening was dubbed "Scotch-a-cigar-a-palooza".  Everyone brought a few cigars with them as well to put in a communal humidor and everyone just chose what they wanted to try that night.  I recall I had a very nice Punch and a not so exciting Rome y Julieta.

Hehe... your gain his loss, fun story on how you got hold of a single malt only available at "the distillery Taiwan, Japan and selected duty free outlets in Asia"

IIRC, it was a Punch Deluxe, I do remember it being a maduro.  I haven't tried the petit coronation, seems they don't sell that one at the store i generally purchase from.  If I come across it though I will check it out.

Ever had a Lars Teten " Body Shop " made w, pre embargo Cuban Tobacco?

That's like 50 year old CUBAN leaf.

Talk about Smoooooth.

How about Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee ?

I've had the pleasure of enjoying that at MO' Bay ( that's Montego Bay ) in Jamaica.

At one time Blue Mountain was voted " Best Coffee in the World ."

Does Perdomo roll Fuente's Cigars ?

I've got some 15 year old " Opus X s " in one of my Humidors just aging and mellowing along w, some Fuente Hemingways, H. Upmann Robustos, Joya De Nicaragua Viajantes, La Unica 100 Maduro Churchills, Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Robustos, and many more plus one of the 10 year old ones I particularly liked , the Ashton Cabinet Virgin Sun Grown Figurado.

Lu, you are the only lady I know who enjoys smoking Cigars.

That's very cool !

Sorry to hear your Humidor is bare.

I got into Cigars back about 1993 and the prices were very high through the '90s.

I think I paid $43 a stick for my Lars Tetens " Body Shops ."

Fuente Opus X were mostly in the mid $20s depending on which size a stick. I think they got more expensive to where they were stupid expensive.

I used to buy alot of brands by the box , so I can't remember what some cost per stick.

I've cut down my smoking so much so that I'm still working off what I stocked up on back in the day when I bought from a place called JR' s in the Carolina's I believe.

JR had a huge warehouse but since he discounted he couldn't get certain brands like Arturo Fuente but I used to by boxes of 50 H. Upmann Robustos for about $135 .

Ahhh cigars...

Lemme see, my favourite stick is the Esplendido. It's interesting to see you guys rag so much on the cubans. When I went to cuba a lot of people were selling fake homemade cubans, which were pretty much crap. A lot of the cigars that they'll steal from the factories are taken before they're sealed and processed, actually.

For the more obtainable stuff, the Flor Dominicana Doble Ligero is pretty good, but it can sneak up on you.  I've really been getting into them.

As DoubleEagle said, it's kinda hard to beat an OpusX, I've had exactly one in my entire life and it absolutely blew me away.

For everyday smoking I'm actually partial to a small company based out of  Venezuela, Crispin Patino. While their mass marketed stuff is absolutely unsmokable, their limited productions are really, really good. Cheap too  ;D It doesn't hurt that I grew up smoking them and am a little partial.

As for someone here mentioned acid, it's pretty aptly named. I would rather lick an ashtray.

I wouldn't call it ragging, well, maybe, but it is definitely the case though that other producing countries have caught up or surpassed the quality of cuban cigars, making it somewhat pointless so seek out ways to sidestep the embargo restrictions.  It's not that their cigars are bad of course, they're very enjoyable, and I'll gladly smoke a cuban if they're available.

And Acid's do indeed suck.

Origin or price isn't what makes a cigar interesting for me, recently i ordered a set of debranded (not sure if that is the right expression :)) cigars. The company that sells them are a small firm that offers these debranded packages every month, and at the end of the month they present what cigars it was. probably going to be impossible for me to guess brand and origin. But it gives me an opportunity to taste a cigar without any expectations and maybe find some new favourites :)

And when it comes to Cuban cigars, the ones that i have tried (not that many) have suited my taste.

Do most of you find that a Cigar tastes better while consuming your favorite Alcoholic beverage ?

I usually smoked and drank Glenfiddich Scotch or a Dark Beer depending on what activity I had just participated in.

I've been told to take a swish of Lemon juice and spit it out to clear my Palate so that I can taste the real flavor of the Cigar.

I'd say a Guinness is my beverage of choice with a cigar.  I wouldn't say I'm super experienced with the scotches, though on occasion I go in that direction.

I also clip mine, not a huge fan of a punch.  Also a reason I like torpedos, clipping is very forgiving with them, though I don't think I've had a cigar unravel on me in years.  I'd like to get a classy pair of scissors, but I usually forget to bring my cutter inside so I just replace them when I've left them in the rain for too long, so for the time being I can't have nice things.  I DO want one of those cigar tents like Arnold put up in the capitol building.

What do you guys do regarding bands?  Leave em on?  Take em off right away?  Take em off once they've loosened from heat?

Years ago a friend took his off right away and botched his wrapper, so I asked what the point of that was.  He said it was out of respect for others so he's not showing off his cigar brand.   ???  It was just a Cohiba.

Thought a  little price comparison would be interesting for you living in the US.

USA
CAO Italia Ciao Box of 20 109$
Sweden
CAO Italia Ciao Box of 20 229$

USA
Don Pepin Garcia My Father No:1 Box of 23 207$
Sweden
Don Pepin Garcia My Father No:1 Box of 23 465$

But we have the option to buy Cubans from Switzerland ....

COHIBA Siglo IV Box of 25 384$
http://www.cigarone.com/cuban-cigars/30,cohiba-siglo-iv--cuban-cigars.html (http://www.cigarone.com/cuban-cigars/30,cohiba-siglo-iv--cuban-cigars.html)

Or.....

EL REY DEL MUNDO Petit Coronas Box of 25 134$
http://www.cigarone.com/cuban-cigars/123,el-rey-del-mundo-petit-coronas--cuban-cigars.html (http://www.cigarone.com/cuban-cigars/123,el-rey-del-mundo-petit-coronas--cuban-cigars.html)

So its a bit weird, the cigars from Central/South America becomes more expensive than the Cuban cigars.

Thought a  little price comparison would be interesting for you living in the US.
. . . . .

So its a bit weird, the cigars from Central/South America becomes more expensive than the Cuban cigars.
Real shame since i really like CAO and Padron.

That is odd.  Do you imagine purchasing from an American shop and shipping internationally might be a little cheaper?  I have no concept of international shipping charges.

I also wonder how popularity of cigars differs between the US and Europe, and which country enjoys their cigars the most.

The problem when you order from American shops is that the Swedish customs put tax on, so they will become as expensive as they are in Sweden. Only way around i guess would be if they sent them as a gift, Sweden doesn't tax gifts.

Belive Cigars are more popular in the USA then in the EU.

Have you done the salt test and calibrated your hygrometers?

Salt test link: http://www.cigarsinternational.com/html/cig101_12st.asp (http://www.cigarsinternational.com/html/cig101_12st.asp)

This is the one that came with the humidor i bought, it was only 2 percent off. real easy to calibrate with a Small screwdriver.

I did it back in February when I got a new hygrometer in.  I saw a digital humidor on Gilt a few weeks back but it was sold out already, gave you all the readings of temp and humidity and such on a digital display, normally really expensive too but it was a doeable price.  Owell.

I'm down to 7 sticks in my humidor!  Must order more very soon.

I have a small temp. gauge in my main Humidor which sits on 4 others and I can tell just by felling a Cigar if the humidity is right in the Humidor.

Bought a cheap digital thermo/hygro, and the saying you get what you pay for is once again painfully true!

Did the salt test on the digital and it was off by more then 10%  :P

Considering I posted on February 24th that I received a shipment of 24 cigars on top of the 15 or so I had in my humidor at the time, and I have 7 left less than 2 months later . . . I don't think I give my cigars a chance to go bad (and they come really well taken of from cigarsinternational).

That, and I also seem to have a problem.  [coffee]

Nice.  I'm working on a film right now, and the Director, Producer, and I just realized that we all ride and we all smoke cigars.  The Director is in a different league however, he's got the money to burn, literally.  He smokes vintage gems worth $100 a stick.  We're supposed to go for a ride next weekend up into Malibu for some lunch and a smoke, and he's providing the cigars.   [thumbsup]

Hopefully they don't complain when they realize work isn't getting done.

You lucky bastard ;) I'm getting more and more curios how real old Cubans taste like the pre embargo ones.

I'll guess as long as you have your Cuban embargo the the cigars from Cuba will be "reasonably" priced, the day that the embargo is lifted the prices will go crazy  :-\

On another note.. sounds like you have a pretty nice job there, think twice before you give it up. I gave up  a job i just loved a couple of years ago and i regret it deeply!

Thanks, yea, the job is fun, most of the time at least.  I spoke with a woman from one company up in San Francisco this morning, technically it's in Marin.  I gotta say the job does have its upsides.  I also am seeing that the guy I'd potentially be working for does freelance film work, so perhaps I could work out an option to do the same thing while still have the stability of non-union gaming work.

The film producer stopped by my studio this morning and dropped this off.  I'm fairly sure it is cuban.  Looks amazing though.  Montecristo Open Eagle - and the band says Habana.

Surely looks like a genuine one, bands, nice colour no veins wraper. and the shoulder looks just like my Montecristo's.

Like the look with the new double band on the new sport series, Monte is one of my favourite brands.

Correct me if I'm wrong but from the people I have talked to about Habanas, they are very robust , not for beginners.

Having not had a Habana for going on 15 years I can't remember what the one I had was like.

Some day I'll smoke the pre-embargo Cubans that I have had in my Humidor since the mid '90s.

I've had friends go to Cancun and buy Cubans and tell me that they couldn't tell any difference.

I had a Doctor that I used to play Golf with who told me he had a Romeo & Julietta one time from Cuba that tasted like a hot fudge Sundae.

He was not a regular Cigar smoker so that surprised me to hear him say that.

The Cubans that i have tried so far have been medium bodied, the ones i have smoked have had a smoother body, (really don't know how to describe it, but i'll try) more mature with a rounded taste, not harsh as some of the non Cubans have been.

Of course some of the non Cubans have been real good, like i posted earlier i really liked the CAO Italia, but i don't get how it got a 91 rating in Cigar Aficionado while the Montecristo No 4 got a 89 rating.

But like i said earlier, cigar taste is as subjective as it can be :)

Dante, would you say the Perdomo Sampler is worth getting?

I am going to design and build a humidor out of some Golden wood that I've had laying around my shop.  Its been waiting for a worthy project.  Can't decide whether I want a 36" wide x 16" tabletop display case with a water glass insert in the top.  Or, a 3-4 drawer end table style humidor with a clear glass panel on the top.  Either will be lined with Spanish Cedar.

Definitely worth getting, and I think for the price it averaged something like $2.50 a cigar.  I like samplers because they meet a nice pricepoint and you can try more kinds of cigars and find new ones you enjoy.  That set had a lot of good ones in it.  I don't think I really disliked any of them, just preferred some over others.

I think you'd be better off w, the 3-4 drawer Humidor.

That way you can separate you sticks as far as mild to strong and they won't co mingle so much as if you had them all together if I have the concept right on the 36"X 16".

When you start building your humidor make sure you document it and post it here :)

And for humidification go for these, absloutely the best and easiest way to.

Its coming!  34.5" x 15.5" x 4".  Dovetailed corners, mitered lid with clear glass panel, solid Spanish Cedar bottom (unsurfaced on the underside, planed on the inside).  I am going to line the sides with 1/4" Spanish Cedar.  I have to iron out a couple of base detail as well as any lid edge profiles.  Then, it'll be finish time!

When I got the 4/4 x 8" Spanish Cedar, thought it would be cool to make a solid humidor out of it.  No planing, just a rough, splintery cube of aromatic wood with dovetailed corners and a treasure inside.

Pretty pricey....$24 a stick for the Churchill w, Cameroon Wrapper.

I've been eyeing those for a long time, though I need a raise before I can swing >$200 for a box of 10.

Sweet looking band on those.

I got some Fuente " God of Fire" sticks and decided I should have one this morning .

It is a beautiful Cigar to behold in the hand.

So smooth , no large veins above the surface of the wrapper.

A Cameroon wrapper w, a delightful aroma , a hint of chocolate w, a complex mix of other spices.

A very easy drawing Cigar, cool and very flavorful.

Somewhat creamy, but full flavored.

A lasting taste of spice with no harshness.

Very good as an after breakfast smoke.

Can't wait until I finish it after a late evening meal.

So far a definite winner.

Dolph    :)

Not sure I've ever had an 'after breakfast' smoke, though now I'm imagining the combination of a cigar and bacon and somehow it makes a lot of sense.

I've finally acquired a source for cubans here in LA.  The guy owns a really nice cigar bar here, now that I'm introduced it seems I now have access to some very nice Montecristos and others of the 'illegal' nature. Pretty cool, even though my views haven't changed that non cubans can be just as good if not better.  Still, nice to have an 'in' in something :)

Coming from more of a pipe smoking background, a buddy of mine got me started on the cigar thing just before I left Hawaii.  Now I find myself enjoying cigars more and more.  Rgr, do you pick up sticks from anywhere particular here in the DC area, or mainly order online?

Mainly mail order.

Signature Cigars and Bethesda Tobacco have nice humidors with good selections.

I end up at the place on King Street every once in a while......its aiight, the guy running it has an attitude like he knows he is the only game in town.

You going to get your bike cleaned today?  If I can peel myself away from Familial duty for a couple hours, I might make it.  Ill bring a couple of treats.

I don't know, maybe.  I thought about it, but like Ian, I would rather do that sort of stuff myself.  Well, wash the bike that is, not prance about in a bikini.  ;)

What time are you headed up if you go?

I started to like the CAO Italias, never had the Brasilia.  I've got a lot of various Glenmorangie scotches leftover from my Scotch-a-cigar-a-palooza I've been wanting to try out, never could get fully into whiskey.  A had a romeo y julieta with a glass of Lion's Peak port last night, that went together nicely with a book on the patio.

I haven't read this whole thread but one of my favorite sticks would be the Macanudo Gold.

A very mild somewhat sweet smoke due to it's use of the upper most prime Connecticut shade wrapper leaves and filler.

I like the 7x49 size.

They cost about $8 / stick.

I did notice you go with the longer sticks.  I've got a friend here who buys Churchills with the intention to only smoke half of it cause he says the last half isn't very enjoyable for him.  Do you find that's the case as well?

Ben,  I think you'll find the Padron and the La Flor Dominicana to be very different smokes.

Don't know about the Brasilia.

What do you like about a Cigar ? Full body ? Medium or Mild in it's overall taste ?

Ben,

The Padron should be a full bodied smoke as well.

It's been a while since I smoked any but the Padron 1964 Anniversary was a full bodied smoke.

I never inhale.

If you are inhaling , then all bets are off  !

I swish some Lemon juice around in my mouth , then spit it out, to cleanse my palette before I smoke , that way I get rid of any taste of what I had in my mouth before the Cigar.

The Lemon juice leaves a fresh taste and then you get the true taste of the smoke.

I don't inhale either.  I have a feeling I would  [puke] if I did.  lol

That is the Padron that I bought today.  I'm looking forward to trying it out.

I usually like to pair a smoke with either some bourbon, a single malt or an especially tasty beer.

( BM ) Before Migraines, I drank either Scotch or Beer when I smoked Cigars.

Now it's just a straight smoke.

I like to smoke a Cigar while riding the Tractor mowing the fields too.

There's a very noticeable difference in flavor, and this particular cigar I found to be very full bodied.  It was semi-difficult to get through the entire thing, had to pace it.  Overall I'd say the flavor was bolder and had more spice than the Dominican grown leaf.  It was also very well rolled and kept; the last few Dominican Montecristo's I've had were plugged and dry.

May be you got the Dominicans from a shop that didn't keep their Humidor up to the correct Humidity.

While I was in the hospital one of my friends thought it was an acceptable idea to bring some cigars into the hospital with the intention of having them with me in the ICU.  Nice gesture, just still not quite sure what in the hell he was thinking.

a workmate is heading to Havana next week for a week. As my humidor is almost empty of cubans, I put an order in for a box of corona sized punch and a box of partagas........my two favourite cubans for value.

I just picked up a bottle of Laproaig 10 yr. old in anticipation for their safe landing.
