Poll
Question:
Who will win the Stanley Cup?
Option 1: Blackhawks
Option 2: Flyers
It's that time of year again, NHL Playoffs! Place your votes, shoot the shit, make fun of that player you can't stand (Crosby), do whatever you want. I'll be deleting teams and resetting votes as the tournament goes on, so make sure to come back and re-vote after each round is done. (Once again, sorry for not having "boobies" as a voting option.)
Even though it's hard to ignore their poor playoff performances, especially the last 4 years, once again I'll be placing my vote on the San Jose Sharks. I hope they don't disappoint me this time. Would love to see a rematch between the Penguins and Capitals in the semi's, which doesn't look too far fetched.
I'll start by saying I'm foremost a Penguins fan (born there, moved when I was 5) and I can appreciate having Crosby on my side. That said, if he was on a different team, I'd probably think he was a chode as well. I am expecting HeMan to chime in shortly on this topic. I'm more of an Evgeni Malkin fan, that dude's outstanding. And last years playoffs were amazing, that is of course from my view as a Pens fan. The 7 game series against the Caps was awesome. [thumbsup]
I am not expecting the Pens to go to the finals. But yea a semis matchup with the Caps would be really entertaining. I think the Caps will get to the finals, and I'm hoping the Sharks do as well. I'd like to see some games up in San Jose this year. I am not interested in seeing the Red Wings.
My prediction is Capitals winning it all, though that's not my preference.
Detroit born and raised. Go WINGS!
The Sharks, IMO, will choke as they always do. And the Caps are depending on Jose Theodore! [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]
Good luck with that!
I'll be pulling for my Avs, as always, but my prediction is that the Pens will get it done again.
WINGS! [clap]
Habs.
I know, they have next to no chance. :-\
Let's Go Red Wings!
I've been a wings fan since I was a kid, and as disappointing as this season was, I'm still pullin for them. And they totally handed the Penguins the cup last year.......What happened to you Red Wings :-(
Come Back!
I predict a Chicago vs. Pittsburgh final matchup with Chicago winning in 7. Too bad I'm rooting for the Canucks who will most likely be beaten by Chicago.

Atta boy. I figure it this way. Wings were right behind the Oilers in man games lost and we see how they ended up. I dont see the Wings getting to the finals but I think a long run will happen. Love to see a Detroit/Chicago matchup. Like old time hockey, well now thanks to Chicago finally having a team to at least give the Wings a good game [laugh] Not even going to mention anyone from the East conference since it wont matter, they always struggle against the West....unless you have Crybaby on your team. Sorry still a little sore from last year. :-\
hockeytown my ass.
go pens.
i know they will prob go out to a lead and then choke horribly, but i'm picking the flyers because i would love for them to make it.
i would rather vote against the devils and pens though ;D
Hawks!
The only thing I fear is a healthy, motivated Detroit and the Hossa Curse.

Im sorry...19 straight years making the playoffs (that is a professional sport ongoing record), 1st time in ten years starting a series on the road....I can see why you hate the Wings. We are the yankees of hockey...I know, I know. But, sadly I dont think its our year.
Glad to see the Habs finally in it, and to take a game in Washington was HUGE.
Seems the 1st round will be interesting with a bunch of the lower seeded teams taking the 1st game.
God, I love Hockey playoffs!!!

Was lucky enough to score some tickets to that game. Piss poor start for the caps - but it made for a good game in the end
Sharks score the ONLY goal of the game and still lose. Disappointed to say the least. Hoping they tie it up on Tuesday.

O'Reilly tipped the puck with his stick.
Even the Shark's Goalie said so.
Go AVS!
BC.
A little off topic:
I was in Canada in December/January & scored tickets to see Buffalo & Leafs play in Buffalo, 8 rows behind the goalie. It was awesome to see, never would have thought I would see a NHL game.
The Leafs had nothing & they will be lucky to see the playoffs within the next 5 years.
The thing that stuck in my mind most was the puck being fired into the glass, it's like a gun going off. And one player that stuck out most was playing for the Sabres, he would have been at least 7 feet tall, I think his name was Myers ???
And a fight nearly breaking out on the way out of the stadium, some dickhead yelling out "DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE MAN!" [roll]
And it was fricken cold. :P

usually it's a D instictively kicking his foot out, or getting it on the stick to stop a centering pass, and deflecting it in past his goalie.
although, in one instance (local roller hockey) I had a F racing on a loose puck in neutral... beats the other guy to the puck...
forget which way he was going!
and shoot it past me, thinking he just scored on a breakaway.
[laugh] ruined my shutout, too! stupid kid
Backstrom...Ouch.
Quite a few years ago, in a Wings game, there was a great own goal. I forget who they were playing but the Wings were up a goal in the last minute or so. The other team had the goalie pulled and their center won the faceoff. The puck went straight between the 2 D guys and all the way down the ice into the empty net. Might have been Anaheim.
pens in 7 over blackhawks for the cup.
1 more knife wound in hossa's heart... then we can fade into obscurity.

Cold is relative...
That would have been Myers, and he's not quite 7' (6'8"). This is his rookie season in the NHL and he's only 20!!! He is doing an amazing job against the Bruins. All the Sabres defense is....the offense is no where to be found. [bang]
Next time your in town (Buffalo) look me up, we'll have to grab a drink.

Glad you stipulated it was an active record because the record for most Most Consecutive Playoff Appearances
29-Boston Bruins, 1968-96
28-Chicago Blackhawks, 1970-97
25-St. Louis Blues, 1980-2004
24-Montreal Canadiens, 1971-94
21-Montreal Canadiens, 1949-69
They still have a way to go to get into the record books but I wouldn't bet against them just yet.
Hawks vs this is where I'm having problems I don't think the Caps have the goaltending but I like the offensive fire power.
ahhh what the hell last year I got it right with wings - pen Pens winning in 7 this year it is Hawks Pens Pens in 6.

Own goals are given to the last opposing player who touches the puck, always funny when it was the goalie! Beer leagues it is given to the player with the least number of goals outside of the goalie i.e. pity goal!

That was only a minor flame, originally I was going to say St. Louis I thought had the record at 25 years but I decided to check just to make sure ...
I managed to see two Detroit games this year (yea for free tickets, thank you Coca-cola, and Kraft) love the arena it has such a good vibe. Prior to this year I've been to Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal games, next year Boston, NY Rangers, and I'm going to try to get to Nashville vs Detroit game some time just to expiernce that environment.
As for the Hawks making it .... I think I still see Hawks-Detroit western final, and the Hawks being just a little bit fresher and Howard not being able to raise his game that one notch more. Just my thoughts.
Round one
West
SJ over Avs
Van over LA
Hawks over Preds
Detroit over Phx
East
Pens over Sens (Booooo)
Caps over MTL
Flyers over Devils
Sabers over Bruins

Yes, JLA is a great place to see a game. Not a bad seat in the house, the concourse is lacking and the restrooms need a refresh, but stilll a great building.
So that would be a SJ/Det and Van/Chi matchup for round 2. Hmm...tough call there.

Why?
Detroit stomped San Jose in the regular season and the Sharks aren't really setting the NHL on fire in the post-season either.
Granted, Detroit isn't doing as well as I would have liked right now but they are the lower seeded team and Phoenix is arguably a much better team than the Avs.
woo hoo!
bye bye devils!

I say that because although, they
should beat the sharks I think they are just getting tired and sloppy, tho the win the other night was pretty nice and they looked good. the question is whether or not they'll be able to keep that up. If they can then they'll take the sharks, if not, SJ will probably advance.

it's ok. there will be some rule put in place that philly has to win 6 games and washington only has to win 1 to take the series.
either that or philly will jump out to a commanding lead and boucher will once again forget how to stop the puck.

EDIT: Looks like I spoke too soon. Left after the second period to get some taco truck, score was 1-1. By the time I got back I had missed 3 goals. Dammit. But, yay! It didn't have to go to 7 games.
I gotta say, im pretty impressed that the wings pulled it off, now they've just got to knock the sharks out and we'll be smooth sailing ;D I'm hopin washington beats those Canadiens and advances, that would be nice to see. It would be a shame for them to have worked so hard and be knocked out in the first round
I wish the Wings would play like they did in games 5 and 7 all the time.
That being said.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the whole game. Only portions of the first and third periods, but your description fits. Strong puck possession, good fore/back checking, physical play.
I also saw a lot of Miller/Eaves/Abdelkader/Helm out there tonight. They remind a lot of the "Grind Line" from back in the day.

To quote Micky Redman..."Wings put on a clinic". Great game for Wings fans, but boy, too close a series for the weak hearted.
Second round will be a very good round. I predict Chi/Van will beat the hell out of eachother...not gonna matter who wins that one, Det/SJ will be more of a shootout and winner of that series should go the distance.
I really hate to say it because I kinda like Montreal but I hope the Caps get their shit together and win. If not, I think it's a given that the Penis will make the Finals again. God, the East just blows.
All those years in DC I came to expect a Caps collapse and for it to come in a painful, embarrassing fashion, but this is ridiculous. C'mon, fellas!
That said, I've got a soft spot in my heart for Montreal as well -- back when I was a kid and had hockey dreams (in Texas of all places) Ken Dryden was my biggest hero.
Monday Caps game was painful to watch. 11ty billion shots on goal and nothing went in. It was like damn hockey foreplay. Fingers crossed for tonight.
i think that playoff hockey is one of the best sporting events ever.
the season should be 2 months long and the rest should be all playoffs. lol.
the only interest i have in the caps game is that i don't want either team to win. and i was on the edge of my seat cheering and groaning for both teams. it was great!
Wow :o What a defensive game by the Canadiens.

The Wings have been there recently, too. It really sucks.
I was watching most of the game and I can't help but think that I may be wrong. The Habs shut down the best offense in the NHL and won 3 straight to close it out. If they can do that to the Caps, I think they can probably do the same to the Pen

CHI / VAN should be a heck of a grudge match. Here's hoping Bobby Lou stays shaky like he was early against LA.
A Detroit buddy of mine pointed out that the Red Wings had to flame out early in the playoffs a couple years in a row before they became that great team... I think that's where Ovie & Co are now. Heartbreaker to Pittsburg last year, huge letdown to MTL this year... they're either going to plunge into the cellar or come back stronger next year.
Sabres playoffs ended when Vanek went down. That team just wasn't deep enough to survive any more roster subtractions.
What the hell is going on in the East. 1, 2, and 3 seeded teams all out in 1st round ??? I'm not too shocked about the Caps though, too much up front and we all know that defense is what is most important in the Playoffs...or just a hot goalie.

That's an easy one. The East sucks.
Only one of those series could really be called an upset, I think, and that was the Habs beating the Caps. Philly owned New Jersey all season going 5-1. There was only a 9 point difference between Buffalo and Boston and Boston won 4 out of 6 in the season.

someone left out the reigning cup champs in their "east sucks" equation...
the series have all laid out perfectly for the pens. if they don't make it to the finals considering the road ahead of them, i would consider it a sincere disappointment. talent vs. talent, the pens have it made until the finals. the Habs are going to be the Hurricanes of this year. On FIRE, with a red hot goaltender, until the superior offensive talent depth of the Pens roster puts them in their place. Pens SWEEP the habs.
Sweep??? That's pretty bold! I agree, the pens are a good team, and they may have a great offense, but their defense is lacking, and someone already said the key to the playoffs is defense
If Montreal can beat Washington, the highest scoring team this year, they can certainly beat the Pens. Wouldn't surprise me at all.
Pens vs Habs - Pens in 5, too many lines that can roll for the habs to handle and Crosby isn't Ovie, he won't try to do it all himself, he uses he team mates much better. Beside the Habs Coach Martin isn't capable of coaching against an elite team couldn't do it in Ottawa, couldn't get Florida out of the basement etc.
Philly vs Boston - 7 games Boston wins it, Philly is missing too many key pieces and Rask is better than Boucher. Savard is back and someone submarines Pronger and puts him out of the series (though that may help Philly)
Hawks - Van - 7 Games, sweet lou finally wakes up for an extended period of time and channels his inner/and very real gold medal again shutting down the hawks 5-2 in the final game. Kane wonders off to the gas light distict and discovers a cabbie that hits back, cops find him the next day with two black eyes and missing 4 teeth.
San Jose vs Detroit - Detriot wins in 6, Thorton, and Heatly are missing in action and Marleau is only slightly better. Nabakov asks for a trade to a team that won't fall alseep after the regular season is over and is traded to Dallas by Wilson who claims he was taken advantage of while drowning his sorrows. Detroit continues to march on.
Just saying.

No, they're included in that. They may be the best team left in the East but that's not saying much.
I think the fact that we agree that the Pen
is will make the Finals after one round pretty much proves my point, that the East sucks.

Tough to do much when you take 10 penalties. Wings plays like sh!t and SJ played with patience. This is looking like SJ might have gotten rid of the playoff curse.
not quite yet! they've still got at least 2 more games. I'm confident my wings will pull through as long as they stay outta the box and play like they played in games 5/7 vs the Coyotes!

I think that one may be brand new. You can use that with all your friends without giving credit.
Skulch / skultch came from denizens of Clutch's message board, pro-rock.com aka sassafrass cove. It was either this guy Weasel75 from Texas or this guy RJ from C-bus, Ohio. Before posting there I'd always known it as the grundle.
Using huff in that manner originated with someone that runs a Dr. Phil McGraw alias on that same board (and gives people bizarro life advice that usually culminates in them offing themselves in a brutal public way because of their general failures at life). I think the Dr. Phil alias referred to one of my friends as a "nut huffer" for the way he glorified the band, sort of like accusing them of jock-riding.
I just slapped them together.
Enjoy.

Looks like the Sharts blowing the refs didn't work this time. I'm having a really hard time believing that somehow, the Sharts are now the most disciplined team in the NHL. Not one penalty in today's game. I saw at least 3 in the first 2 periods. Maybe they'll swallow next time and get back to the 5 on 3 action.

Not a stellar performance by the Zebras in any way. Eager's hit in the first wasn't a penalty by any stretch of the imagination, and they sent the wrong guy to the box on the last tripping call.
Regardless, hooray Hawks!

Mmmouaip!!!! :-\
The Hawks are absolutely owning the Sharks. It's impressive to watch. If you keep one Hawk in the box the entire game, maybe it would even the game up a bit. And I don't see how the Sharks can complain about needing more puck possession, but continue to play the dump-and-chase game. Just not working.
I noticed the number of penalty minutes for the Sharts. Got a little toothy, I guess. I'm sure they'll smooth it out before the next game.
Dunno if I'm prepared to have the Hawks play man-down all game, but they have done an impressive job thus far. They seem to be able to sustain the intensity and attack just a bit longer than SJ, and it's paying off in timely goals.
That said, two wins ain't four wins. I'm nervous until the Sharks are put to bed... they're a team that could wake up and start pouring on the offense at any time.
Hawks are on a roll.

Nope, plate remains in. Had my surgery done at Jefferson in Philly, they insisted that the plate stay in unless there were complications or long term pain. I never have any issues with it but who knows how It will feel 10 years from now. Scar is nearly completely vanished and I'm in no rush to make another.
Although I think it would be funny to see Hossa come up short 3 years in a row, the Hawks are looking pretty good right now. I'm putting my (imaginary) money on the Hawks.

Ice hockey should end when the ice melts outside.
I've never been a subscriber to the theory that every team should get into the playoffs. You just see more low quality play with the formula the NHL uses to generate revenue. All pro sports do it.
Teams that suck should go play golf at the end of the season not go to the playoffs.

This happens in the NHL... just look at the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Stanley Cup playoff is extremely long and a grueling road, but that's what makes it unique. I can't see changing the formula. I would object to expanding the NHL playoffs, but I wouldn't advocate contraction. I also think that recent years have dispelled the idea that 8- and 7-seeds are "teams that suck." Witness thie year's Flyers team, and recent performances by Anaheim and Edmonton - all low seeds that made the Finals.
I would, however, advocate contraction of the league itself.

I'd ask how many teams in the league and how many in the playoffs. I don't think a team that played poorly all year belongs in the playoffs as I said. These guys get extra money for playoffs, and if they can't perform during the regular season why pay them more?
I'm spoiled. The NHL was 6 teams when I started watching. The goalies wore no masks, the players no helmets.
And the Stanley Cup playoffs was a very short, albeit tough road.

not everyone makes the playoffs. like football, a certain percentage of the teams will make it, and some will just barely make it (the flyers this year) and as with all things, a team that gets hot at the end of the year can possibly make it far in the playoffs while being a high seed (once again, the flyers- they are #7, chicago is #2)
if they have a points based system of keeping track of who is doing what then why not just use the points to determine the winner at the end of the season? that will tell you who did the best over teh entire season and then playoffs aren't needed. however, there will always be playoffs in the USA. it's ingrained in our culture.

I hope the "hoisting the cup" tradition goes away after this one. Ted Lindsay started it to take the cup to the sideboards and let the fans see it. It was to honor the fans, not the players. The gesture is extra meaningless when the owners and coaches are lifting it overhead and kissing it.
