Title: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: scduc on May 23, 2011, 06:08:06 PM So I'm looking at a post from Heman and I see these dust covers on the front calipers. I do remember that mine had these at one point, but they are no longer there. Is this a reason for concern?

Title: Re: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: atomic410 on May 25, 2011, 07:24:05 AM if you are talking about the metal piece that is hed to the back of the calipers by the pad pins they are unneeded. when removed they will allow the pads to be slightly freer and thus could reduce brake drag. [bacon]
Title: Re: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: battlecry on May 25, 2011, 01:40:47 PM Hey atomic, thanks for the tip. I just removed the plates and the clips. Replaced the clips with safetywire so the pins are secure and now I can clean that whole area better and easier.
Just wait and see, I keep removing weight from my steed like this and I'll be able to catch that 140 mph 620 Capirex. Title: Re: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: atomic410 on May 25, 2011, 01:47:36 PM defentaly worth a second a lap [bacon]

hmmm... i need new pads soon anyway. but i'm assuming that's with safety wiring the pins. the plates at as springs to keep tension on the pins so they dont move. Title: Re: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: battlecry on May 25, 2011, 02:09:21 PM Yes, safetywire, 'cuz Murphy comes to your garage at night and steals the safety pins...

I know that the bike came with these shields, but lost them somewhere. I can now sleep better knowing that they are not needed. Title: Re: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: battlecry on May 26, 2011, 05:12:40 AM Proper engineering practice, say for corrosive dust control, preventing pad vibration, helping keep the pins in place?

I just put the pins back in never lost one. 3 years of racing like this, no problems. if you want even less drag and better brakes get a floater kit. good bye drag [bacon] Title: Re: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: ducatiz on May 26, 2011, 06:15:02 AM Why do you think Brembo put 'em on? so they could sell you replacements 5-6 years later for $20 each when you lose them Title: Re: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: Blue on May 26, 2011, 08:11:59 AM Why do you think Brembo put 'em on? Why did they?I have replaced brake pads on other motorcycles that have had a cover over the pads and I have replaced brake pads on cars that have not had covers over the pads... Title: Re: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: Munch on May 27, 2011, 07:00:00 PM If you're going to remove those, I'd definitely safety wire the pins. We had a guy last year d-e-s-t-r-o-y his bike when his came out at speed entering the top of the corkscrew at High Pains Raceway. Once the pin was out he went to apply brake, which popped his pads, and then all hell broke loose.
Title: Re: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: ducpainter on May 27, 2011, 07:06:11 PM It's an anti rattle clip.
Has nothing to do with dust or pad retention. Title: Re: Caliper dust sheilds Post by: scduc on May 28, 2011, 03:36:05 PM It's an anti rattle clip. Has nothing to do with dust or pad retention. I believe that you are right, If I remember the one time that I took them off, they just clipped on. I do not think they even came in contact with the pins. I do agree with wiring the pins, even thought I most likely will not.
