OK, most of us more than like bacon. Let's move on to a more controversial food, the often maligned anchovy. Discretionary use can wake up a recipe, over use can kill a recipe, yet as a major ingredient they can be scrumptious. I like them, my wife hates them and refers to them as salty, furry dead fish.
Did you mean to post in NMC?
i eat them maybe once a year... takes me that long to forget that i don't like them that much
I eat them in Olive oil, right out of the can.
maybe on a salad....possibly on a pizza...otherwise NO.
I will eat the smoked oysters in a can on crackers though....every know and then (maybe once a year)

I prefer to use anchovy paste instead of canned anchovies in a bunch of sauces that I make.
As for canned fish... I really like sardines. I like them canned in tomato sauce or hot mustard, on a some toast. Such a great cheap and healthy snack. For some reason they get a bad rap
absolute necessity for my caeser salad, and aglio e olio sauce...
never had 'em on pizza, or out the tin, though
:-X [puke]
too salty, fishy, hairy, gross....
I like them.
I like them but not too many at a time.
What would Puttanesca be without use of them?

My ideal summer afternoon snack is a few anchovies, some tasty olives and a glass of Rioja or Sangiovese.
Boquerones (white anchovies) are my favorite.

So, you agree with my wife. Ellen will consume food with anchovies in it as long as she cannot recognize them. She used to put up with them untill I served her a bagel with anchovy butter on it.

Looks yummy. There is indeed a whole world of anchovy out there besides the canned variety.
unless its futerama where theres only 1 can left.
White anchovies. Yum. Marinated, sour, salty (not as salty as the canned/jar ones).
But I like the other anchovies on pizza, or in seafood pastas as part of the sauce.
Or sauteed with something like broccoli rabe and garlic.

Yeah, white anchovies on pizza or salad just don't cut it. They are best eaten solo.

you got the idea howie [thumbsup]
i'm ok with them in caesar dressing... but not on the salad itself.
if i can tell it's an anchovy, i want no part of it.
i'm not a fan of most fish, especially the fishy one's... :-X
i do like shellfish, of any variety ;D
fishy fish kinda gets to me, too... but once you cook anchovies down... they're nutty and all manner of good
[thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup] [thumbsup]
Anything that resembles a fish, I eat, including eel. [thumbsup]
And shellfish and mussels and oysters and abalone and and and.......
Dammit, you're making me hungry. >:(
Love the dried anchovies too! I eat them by the handful instead of potato chips! My wife got pissed at me because I would break off the heads and feed them to my then 10 month old twins. God I love to torture my wife..... :-)
Scrumptious.

OK so where do you find the white anchovies?
I love anchovies and the whole family does too.
I think I have 4-5 tins of the in the cupboard right now. To many Tuscan dishes that REEQUIRE anchovies.
without them life is just blah.........

Not sure where you find the Sicilian variety (though I bet it'd be worth the effort to track down a real Sicilian grocer...), but a similar vinegar-cured anchovy in Spain is called Boquerones and can be had here:

I worked at a pizzeria in NY and I wouldn't touch the nasty things even if a customer wanted them. I also found that you could grab a couple of slugs from the alley and no one could tell the difference.

Prol'y more a comment on that particular NY pizzeria than on anchovies... Lived on pizza (that and mac & cheese) through grad school in Manhattan and despite some notable standouts, the average NYC slice is, well, edible once you remove the odd roach & add lots of oregano & red pepper...
Now NYC bagels on the other hand, it seems impossible to replicate outside about a 15 mile radius around the City.

Unfortunately, you are correct that a lot of NYC pizza is awful, then again, there are some great shops. Pizza is one food I don't find goes well with anchovy. They take over. Then again, if it is bad pizza it can be a good thing.
I am pro-anchovy, though I do not enjoy snacking on them whole. Definitely for to add flavor to other foods, esp. the oft mentioned Caesar and puttanesca.

The first time I had anchovies on pizza, I thought they looked like gecko fillets.
Eewww. But then I developed an appreciation for them. Anchovies too.

Sally's is the big rival for Pepe's.
Is that place that claimed to have the first hamburger still around (I think on Chapel St somewhere)? And the Yankee Doodle?

:) LOIS LUNCH is the burger place. it's a free standing building that is the size of a large shed. [laugh]
it has like 4 seats... i've always wanted to have a burger there, just to say i did.
directly across the street (crown) is another pizza place and brew pub started up by former employee's of SALLY's...
