If you want a brainless Japanese zombie flick, rent Wild Zero. The garage rock band Guitar Wolf star in this convoluted plotline featuring zombies, transexuals, UFOs, arms smugglers, television reporters, MOTORCYCLES and lots of rock and roll.

The American DVD has a "Drinking game" extra where a beer will flash on the screen every time Guitar Wolf says Rock and Roll.

If I have some time, I'll throw up a list of solid indie horror and drive-in exploitation flicks that are available on netflix and worth seeing.

The first and fourth Toxic Avenger movies are "good" (the second and third are a disaster and not necessary to watch the fourth). If you like Troma movies, you probably have already seen Terror Firmer and Tromeo and Juliet. Both are lots of fun, but probably not if you're not into typical troma fare.

Anyone who likes south park and hasn't' seen Cannibal! The Musical needs to remedy that right away. It was Trey Parker's student film before he dropped out of college and became a millionaire. It's a 50s style musical about the only man in US history convicted of cannibalism - Alfred Packer. South Park humor abounds, but the songs are really catchy. The DVD commentary track might be even funnier than the film, so it's worth two viewings for that.
Features: those two guys who make south park, that little guy who's in their other movies, a cameo by avant-film GOD Stan Brakhage.

A Terry Gilliam film fest would fit within this thread (most of his work, anyway). I'd highly recommend Time Bandits (a group of dwarves are supposed to fix the holes in the space time continuum, but they steal God's map of the holes and use it to rob historical persons). Sean Connery is in it. My favorite Gilliam film is Brazil. A typo + an unforgiving bureaucracy combine to ruin the lives of several people caught in a dystopic future. Robert Di Nero plays the part of a crusading HVAC repairman operating off the grid, making him public enemy #1. As with (almost) all of Gilliam's work, the visuals are dark, inspired and odd.

For light (and nearly family fare) viewing, dig out the 80s classic UHF. Weird Al Yankovic's "masterpiece" centers on his quasi-inheritance of a crappy tv station his uncle does not want and his efforts to reinvent the programming while taking on the local network competition. The plot is hokey, the jokes are hokier and that makes it all the better. Michael Richards (pre-Kramer) plays Stanley Spidowski, a soft-headed janitor turned children's tv show host. Emo Philips has a cameo as a local wood shop teacher. Kevin McCarthy (invasion of the body snatchers) is the easy to hate villain working to derail Al's station.

The Score. Master thief Robert De Nero teams up with mentally-handicapped (in the movie) Ed Norton and criminal fixer Marlon Brando. Watch it and remember why you never, ever, EVER, want to cross De Niro. As if you needed a reason. Also contains the greatest safe-crack in history.

I love weird, oddball movies.

This was on FX network this past weekend. Ed Norton really nailed his part. Worth seeing just for his character alone.

Love Brotherhood of the Wolf and UHF

A movie that my friends and I love but no one seems to know about is Run Ronnie Run.   Seriously funny movie.

Run Ronnie Run has it's moments. It's a Mr Show sketch turned feature film. David Cross and Bob Odenkirk both have said it's a piece of crap and should be avoided. They had to make too many compromises. It's still a fun flick, but I could only imagine how good it would have been if they had been able to make it the way they wanted.
