The circular shape is normal...most sinkholes are round (regardless of cause). Square corners aren't stable and tend to collapse...hence the shape develops to round for natural stability.

I disagree about the article not calling it a sinkhole. While karst topography (limestone bedrock which is soluble in water leading to voids beneath the surface...very common in Florida) is the cause for sinkholes, there are other causes as well. For instance, in the tunneling industry we call a tunnel collapse which expresses itself at the surface (not all do) a sinkhole. Calling it a "piping feature" is bullshit. "Piping" of the soil is the mechanism...but it's still a sinkhole. Sinkhole is a generic term for a hole which opens up from below. Some dictionary definitions may not agree...but in actual practice, anyone except anal geologists calls anything like this a sinkhole.
