Hugs to Brian from Grover also with arthritis.  He is on Metacam and Tramadol and glucosamine/chondroitin.  Even a 1/4 mile walk now puts him in severe pain for the next day.  Of course he doesn't understand, he wants to go for longer walks.  :(

Our vet suggested acupuncture as an option, may try it.

That's sad.  Dogs just want to run and play and be close to thier owners.

Hopefully the meds and acupuncture works!  :)

Ask the vet about Previcox.  That worked great for mine after the daily aspirin didn't really cut it anymore.

Brian's vet/orthopedic surgeon suggested acupuncture as well.

We've started him on glucosoamine/chondroitin.

He was an absolute slug yesterday for no apparent reason.

Was mostly back to normal this morning, however.

This thread has taken a rather depressing turn and I am almost to the point where I don't think I want to get a dog anymore. :-\

I don't think there is a section of more than 3 pages that goes by without someone chronicling their loved ones untimely or timely demise. Or worse yet their suffering from old age etc. Not to say that I don't feel for you because I honestly do and it has been ten years since I have had a dog for fear of encountering that loss again - I am a baby.

I'm supposed to get a dog this December and every now and then check this thread to see and read of the fun stories other owners are having but they seem few and far between.

Anyone teach their dog a new trick or have something else cool going on?

Get a dog. Rescue one from a shelter. Eventually it will grow old, suffer health problems and die. You can't get around that. You can face it or avoid it. It you decide to face that fact and you rescue a dog your new friend will make you smile everyday.

If you put it the effort, you will teach it how to behave. You will teach it silly tricks. You will teach it that it doesn't have to be fearful. That it will be fed and cared for. You will teach it how to be loved. And it will teach you to laugh more. Walk more. And love more.

And one day all of that teaching will go right out the window when it goes hauling ass down the beach for no reason except that it is excited to have the space to run!

But your buddy will come back to you. Because it will love you and trust you. And those memories are why we set ourselves up for the heartbreak of the loss of a pet. Because its worth it and because the dog itself deserves better than being neglected in a 4' x 4' kennel all day.

+1 to what Sac said, plus pictures.

The reason we dote on them and miss them so when they're gone is that it's so incredibly rewarding to be with them when they're here.

If you want that, and your situation in life has room for a dog, get one.

Sorry for the depressing nature of this thread.  I'm as responsible as anyone.  This is a place where we can come and share the ups and downs of having a dog.  Frankly, I can handle the little things my dogs to make me happy every day.  It is when I loose one that I need the support.  Believe me, it's worth it.   So here are couple happy pictures.

We're hoping she's done growing at 80lbs and 2ft tall at the shoulder. Certainly not a super big dog but definitely more than we expected.
