I wish I could find more information, but sounds like about the same thing as when my brother was killed.

He was coming from dinner at a friends house, drunk driver blows stop sign, hits and kills him.  I was only 10 at the time, so some of the details are IZ_.  I remember hearing she was a repeat offender (DUI) and only spent 16-18 months in jail.

One day I will find her and punch her in the nose.  Yeah, I hold a grudge.

One of the guys I work with got a DWI last year.  The way the story was told to me was he was on his way to pick up his daughter.  Young girl I think around 12 or so. Anyway, he says another drunk driver ran a light and t-boned him. His Ford Ranger was bent in half.  Both he and the other driver received a dwi and that's it. Just a ticket. He still to this day goes out to the bar every night and gets drunk. Not just a little bit drunk but heavily impaired, sloppy drunk.  And he is on probation.  We have all told him he needs to cut his shit and just stay home and drink but it doesn't work. He will get what's coming to him but I hope he doesn't take someone else with him.

The victim here is a minority. Just as need torque pointed out. Minority is based on your local, its based on a national demographic. And Hawaiians are probably WAY down there when compared to other minorities., even on their own Island.

3x the legal limit....COME ON. Theres a fine line between " i had 1 beer i can make it home" and "Oh man im drunk i should try to make it home before i get drunker." Though the real comb should be you damn hell shouldnt drive at all without waiting atleast an hour of that beer/shot/wine glass whatever.

56-77mph in a 25mph zone? Lets break it down.
5mph zones are where schools are letting kids out.
15mph zones are rural areas where cars can back out and kids can run out without notice.
25mph zones are places where there is a lot of moving traffic, aka stop signs, red lights, blind turns.

2 or 3x the speed limit i assume the crash was pretty horrible to have a spread that wide (but i know nohting about crime scenes so dont quote me on that). and to be going THAT fast in THAT type of area? Theres a reason its a 25mph zone.

On top of which. she was convited of a DUI in 2005 and the JUDGE WHO RULED OVER THIS CASE, JUDGE RICHARD PERKINS, noted that in 2005 she was convited of a drunk driving charge in 2005 and said "a pre-sentence study indicated she would respond well to a sentence that requires rehabilitation and restitution.". CLEARLY THIS WASNT SO BECAUSE SHE DROVE DRUNK AGAIN in 2007 AND KILLED SOMEONE.

These are the facts and how any judge can give such a light sentence (oh did u catch the bit about her being pregnant?) is beyond me.

Not at all, Detroit is nothing like Hawaii in it's geography. Hawaii could be compared more with Puerto Rico. It has a main population of indiginous people. It would be like saying that a Hispanic person in Puerto Rico is a minority because hispanics are a minority in the U.S., it's not true...

I like NC's law about DUI.  If you kill another person while DUI, it's an automatic 1st degree (premeditated) murder charge.

that would likely not stand up to a constitutional defense.  it makes yuo feel good to see them punished, but in no way can drinking + driving = intent to kill.

maybe 2nd degree or "depraved heart" murder, but not intentional murder.

They justify and successfully apply it by saying that you go chose to go to the bar/restaurant/fridge and consume an intoxicating beverage and willingly got in the car and drove.  As of yet, they've not been challenged as to the constitutionality ~

there's also samoans, tahitians, tongas, etc. but because of the largely polynesian/asian makeup, I think that's why chris was making the comparison to hispanics in puerto rico
