Well the City of Asheville has agreed to hold off approval of an Apartment development project up the road from me pending a new impact analysis

I went to the Technical Review Committee public meeting last month

and tore the City traffic engineer and his study (conducted in the dead of February) to shreds in front of a room full of folks (I have a strong background in network traffic engineering so I get the whole busy-hour/peak period analysis bit)

It was an on-the-record meeting...I went pretty savage on what I called an "at best, amateur effort"..... which I guess was inappropriate as the guy looked like he was hurt and near tears before I was done

Too many years in NY I guess...it has left me assuming everyone is corrupt and out only for personal gain...

and since the fix is always in, in NY you can't stop them so you at least try to take a pound or two of flesh off them as they move past you

these folks are actually trying to do the right thing

Hope I can fit in eventually...I feel sheepish now

You really need to be careful with the locals when you come from away.

They, for the most part, are very different than the 'class' of people you're used to.

You might consider telling the guy the same thing you just told us. It would go a long way.

Or...you could apply for his job and become the City Engineer and never return to NY. ;D

nah don't need or want his job...  [laugh]

and I have given some thought to being a little more conciliatory if I am down there for the next review

all accuracy on my part aside....they aren't used to harsh, humiliating and blunt...

and I certainly am not used to dealing with genuinely decent people,

yet that was one of the reasons I bought there   :-\

There is usually very little consolation in being right regarding a shitty situation. ;)

It's all perspective...no? ;D

In my case, the move from the sprawling DC (which has earned its reputation for corrupt & self-serving the old-fashioned way) area to sort-of rural Arizona (population here's about half the size of Ashville proper) convinced me that the ratio between decent and dirty is not that much different where ever you may roam. That said, in a small town you're more likely to be able to take folks at face value - if it looks like they're trying to do the right thing, it seems they usually are, while the corrupt ones make little effort to hide it. Small town, everybody knows everything about everyone, so why bother?

Almost forgot, I almost hit what looked to be a baby hyena that was trying to cross the highway not far from here.
Zombies showing up down south and now hyenas in PA.
